She had birds which should have alarm her about Denji much earlier But Fujomoto said nah, we don’t do constant writing here Also she wouldn’t just sitting on the ground. At minimum she would have starts walking. Or at least waiting for ambush. Because she knew about heart-trick (she commented about it when Pochita did comeback on Earth from space) She also should have known that something isn’t right here. The thing with Makima is there is an underlying question: "To what degree is Makima a slave to her own nature?" As a devil, they may all inherently be evil to some degree. Barring a few notable examples, they all seem to not care that much about humans, especially in the grand scheme of things. Makima, and by extension Nayuta (her reincarnation), seem to have some caring aspects about them. When she tells Kishibe her plan is to make a safer world by eliminating Death, Famine, and War, the inverse is true. What if she was telling the TRUTH? That completely redefines her character. Immediately following Makima's defeat, Kishibe asks Denji to take care of Nayuta. Saying that, "If the government gets her, she may end up exactly as Makima." Add into the fact we don't know how old the Control Devil was in it's Makima incarnation, but on two separate occasions she refers to her government overseers as scary (train scene), or people necessary evils like her have to answer to (the yakuza leader scene). Many people think it's highly likely she was raised by the government, both on account of Kishibe's wording and the fact she clearly feels like she has to be careful around the Japanese goverment. Indirect evidence to this is how Nayuta is almost a completely different character. Yes, she still mind controls some of her classmates, there is the devil nature, but she isn't orchestrating Machiavellian-tier plans like Makima was. Why? Because she isn't being raised to be a tool by a power-hungry entity like the government. She is being raised in a seemingly entirely loving relationship by Denji. TLDR, Nature vs. nuture is a question inherently central to Makima's/Nayuta's character. Fujimoto cooks.
@CharlieApples
Ай бұрын
I think Makima is ultimately like a dog chasing a car; when and if she ever gets what she wants, which is total control over everyone in the world, she wouldn’t really know what to do with it. While she finds humans’ infatuation with her useful, she understands that they only like her because they are being controlled by her, and wouldn’t care at all if it weren’t for that. And so her deepest subconscious desire to be loved as an equal is, in her mind, impossible. So she plans to do what an all-powerful human would do, which is try and create a new world order. And much like an egomaniacal human, the irony of her having to enslave all of humanity and murder millions of innocent people to supposedly benefit them is completely lost on her.

Before their final battle, Denji asks Makima if bad movies will still exist in the new world she intends to create, and she responds by saying the world would be better off without them. While fans have their own interpretation of the real meaning behind this conversation, it’s still a great indicator of how far Makima is willing to abuse Pochita’s power. While most people go out their way to avoid watching bad movies, they’re ultimately harmless in the grand scale of life’s problems. Makima saying she would erase them shows she wouldn’t stop until even the smallest imperfection is removed from her idea of humanity. It really would’ve been the worst kind of peace.

Makima is literally one of the best psychopath type villains in fiction in my opinion. Yeah, she's a literal demon/devil, but its still really well done. She has no conscience whatsoever, is an expert manipulator that can understand and manipulate people's emotions and cares about nothing outside of her own ambitions/wants. However, this inhumanity , as much as it was a strength, was ultimately her undoing. She only cared about The Chainsaw Devil/Pochita and felt that Denji himself was so base and so far beneath her that she never truly understood him, which ultimately allowed him to get the drop on her and even "permanently" kill her.
@Kongongongg

Fyi, Makima is not young, and the government raising makima was never said in the manga. Kishibe told Denji that the government would turn Nayuta into something similar to makima (a heartless control monster) and not that the government raised Makima. Makima has existed for a long long time - long enough to witness and participate in the War against Chainsaw Man in hell, where all the 4 horsemen fought up against Pochita. The battle against Pochita vs the Four Hoursmen happened years ago. Its mentioned alot, but an example is in chapter 118 which supports this claim this claim: Yoru didn't recognize Fami when she first saw her since *she didn't see her in so long.* Here's the direct quote I'm referring to: "I hadn't seen her in so long that I didn't recognize her." Note that how a smart Devil is raised is still important, and nayuta is a great example, but that doesn't apply to Makima since she's pretty old and wasn't raised by humans.
And she still has the biggest simp-base in anime history. What a weird case But if I'm being honest, this is not the first time an anime villain has thirsted people

@kevinnigins9488 simple, I'd format it like this: start off by talking about the Red Ribbon army, their loss to Goku, segway into Dr. Gero, his morals, how they influenced the Androids, the future timeline, and lead into Cell. From Cell, you can talk about his personality in 3 distinct phases, 1st, 2nd, and perfect, since all his forms have pretty different looks, actions taken, and personalities. From here, you talk about the world tournament, his actions taken, and then use that to talk about his overall superiority complex before tying that into his defeat from Gohan and how both characters are thematically intertwined, talk about Cell's death, maybe mention what he gets up to in the afterlife, recap, video done. Is it a lot? Not really, but there's enough to probably hit that 10 minute mark. Although, maybe a "Analyzing Evil: Dragon Ball's Cell Saga" would be more efficient. Dunno

If the devils had no connection, they'd have no reason to fear Chainsaw more than any other thing that kills devils.

Loved this one! Been reading CSM since it started and have been consistently surprised by this story
“A corpse is talking.” Has to be THE hardest line in all of fiction.
Great video as always, Makima has been one of my favorite villains from the newer Shounen Mangas because she is a truly multilayered character with many different aspects or interpretations of her that I don't think Shounen has truly explored like it does in Chainsaw Men. One part of her character is how she is a god figure as well. It's no surprise with the horsemen (or horsewomen) sisterhood she's in that she has connections to the Bible. Still, as another video on this site by Hiding in Public has found, she has several parallels to the God of the Old Testament in old Jewish beliefs, especially in that scene where all the fiends and hybrids bow to her, similar to the classes of angles bowing to God. It also seems with her being the control devil, she will control the world to a better place much like a god would, but I would argue that there is a much more selfish part of her plan that doesn't involve her survival or domination over the world. One of Hiding in Public's comparisons with Makima to the Old Testment God (keep in mind, neither him nor I are religious scholars and it's been a while since I watched his video) gives an exciting interpretation, that the Old Testement God is lonely so he wanted a connection to his subjects, being human. I believe at some level Makima may truly want love, or an equal relationship of some sort, with Pochita given how she keeps stating that she's a fan of him. However, she is so twisted and inhuman that she can't understand love despite being about to imitate it, leading to her only being able to understand it in the form of control, or being above another like a god, instead of being a pair, an equal, like a real relationship. This even ties into how at the end of part 1 and in part 2, Denji decided to treat Nayuta well since he wanted to show what true love is. By being a great bigger brother to Nayuta, he completes his character arc for part 1 to become like his mentor (Aki) and grow up from a lack of desire or only being hedonistic for desire, to finally control himself to take responsibility for Nayuta. He does all of this because he doesn't want another control devil to become like Makima, Denji doesn't want another Makima and he doesn't believe that a control devil is naturally going to be like her, and he wants to show what true love is. It's a midway between Makima's control and early Denji's Hedonism, it's an equal relationship of respect and love, and we do eventually see that Nayuta was able to understand and show human emotion and not Makima's psychopathy. Makima could never understand what love is, because she never puts someone at an equal level as her, she's always seen herself as higher than others never equal so try as she may, she could only imitate love from the view of God to his subjects, not as a human to another human, which ended up being her undoing.
Analysing evil : Mr C from Twin Peaks
PLEASE do Makishima Shougo one day. For only 22 episodes (as well as 30 min of added scenes you can find on youtube that add a lot of insight) and out of which 40% was only a build up to him, he's a goldmine for analysis.
Another great one Vile! I’d love to see one for Jenny Schecter from “The L Word” and Nina Meyers from “24.” Two of the most devious and cunning characters in tv history and two of my favorites as well.
I’d love to see a breakdown on Kevin from We Need to Talk About Kevin
I've been asking for this episode for ages!

Makima was such an intriguing villain for part 1, as she was a in the high tier of power as one of the horsemen, but there were devils that surpassed her strength, such pochita in his chainsaw man form, so she had to fight smarter and play her cards right to get what she wanted. Her death was satisfying after everything she put Denji through, but it was clearly a pyrrhic victory considering how empty Denji’s life is in part 2 outside of Nayuta.

~Esdeath from Akame Ga Kill. ~Lucy from Elfen Lied. ~Askelad from Vinland Saga.
Could we get a video on Takasugi from Gintama in the future? I’d consider him to be one of the most emotionally compelling, and fleshed out villains I’ve seen in any anime/TV show ever, which is really just a reflection of how well written the entire cast and character dynamics of Gintama are. Im not on the Patreon unfortunately and don’t really have the funds to be subscribing to anything else at the moment, but it would be cool to see this video in the future if anyone on the Patreon wants to suggest it👍 (this is also assuming this man has seen the anime already or is even willing to watch a 300+ ep show lol)
Woah totally didn’t expect this video but LFGGGGGG!!
6th request for Mistborn Trilogy's Lord Ruler and Kelsier (Tyrannical Utilitarian vs. a charming rebellious sociopath). You make great videos!
My favorite part of this story was seeing denji and pochita having that discussion about the control devil and pochita wanting denji to help the control devil. It not only stays in line with the logic of the world with the characters worrying about the devil coming back but also them trying an approach that allows the next control devil to grow and change like denji, and power have done in the whole story.
Excellently written video. Another well done one and a great watch
Potential Candidates for "Analyzing Evil"... -Odin (God of War: Ragnarok) -Dio Brando, Yoshikage Kira, Diavolo, Enrico Pucci (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) -The Major (Hellsing) -Megatron, Unicron (Transformers) -The Mishima Family (Tekken) -Silco, Jinx (Arcane) -Majora's Mask (Legend of Zelda) -Sephiroth, JENOVA, SHINRA (Final Fantasy VII) -Grand Admiral Thrawn (Star Wars) -Edelgard von Hresvelg (Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Crimson Flower is a villain route, fight me) -Yujiro Hanma (Baki the Grappler) -Orochimaru, Pain, Obito, Madara (Naruto) -Black Lagoon (ala Pulp Fiction and Far Cry 3) -High Evolutionary (Guardians of the Galaxy 3)

What I love about the devils in CSM is that they make us examine and reflect upon the concepts they represent and why/how they instill fear in us I never considered the concept of control to be directly scary to me, but to see Makima's weilding of everything that she gets a hold of and to have the concept be contextualized in her characterization made me realize how terrifying control is Losing your autonomy is scary in and off itself, but for it to be given to someone/something else that uses you as a tool is deeply terrifying and the fucked up thing about it is, I may be able to not encounter or ignore many things that may scare me, but I am controlled just as everyone else is by others and by concepts I may or may not grasp. I cannot escape this fact, it's an inherently terrifying part of existince that no one can challenge
