Analyzing As Told By Ginger... (Part 1)

Ойын-сауық

Looking back on As Told By Ginger, it's easy to recognize that it was a show with a lot of substance. It was one that really came out at a perfect time, and was directed at just the right audience. It's a cartoon that would focus on the struggles of being a kid going through a lot of emotional changes while facing the dramatic waters of junior high school. It would be a show that would touch on topics that many kids would face in their everyday life. On top of that, it did so in a way that really felt relatable. All things considered, it was an emotional journey. The characters were complicated and had many layers to them. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're Analyzing As Told By Ginger... We're looking at this show and dissecting just what made it so iconic and what really made it shine as bright as it did.
In the first part of this series, we're laying some foundation for our understanding of the characters, and focusing on building up to the relationship between Ginger and Darren...

Okay hear me out: after having rewatched the show 3 times at my big age, I can say without hesitation that Courtney was Ginger's true friend. Was she shallow and slightly antagonistic in season 1? Absolutely. But by the finale she was the one who stood ten toes down for Ginger whenever she had the chance. Even when Ginger didn't deserve it at times.

I think it's also important to remember that Courtney was also just a kid too. She was spoiled and shallow in a lot of ways, but it's not like she chose to be that sheltered, and her parents, while not cold or unloving, were largely absent. Courtney was a lonely but ultimately sweet teenage girl who just wanted to make real friends.

Personally can't say much for Suite Life, but for me, Lizzie and a host of all the Disney and Nick sitcoms together created a wholistic package of life lessons along with things like Ginger. There was never any single one sitcom or cartoon that would teach everything, so the more I could absorb, the better. In fact, it's these shows that teach you that it's not cool to laugh at someone for their interests in the first place.

I think a lot of Courtney's fascination with Ginger has to do with her, "lower middle class charm". I'm sure she spent most of her life with people like Miranda, more caught up on looks and high society. Though, it is just a fascination, it's not one of those "I'd trade everything to be like that" things. Plus, she does seem to enjoy manipulating situations to see what will happen. I just don't think she sees it as a bad thing, and she doesn't actively wish Ginger harm. Unlike her friend Miranda, who's just a pissy little rich girl stereotype.

I think Darren lashing out at Ginger during the school dance episode was more-so him projecting his own feelings of inadequacy onto Ginger. The things he is accusing Ginger of thinking are actually how he feels about himself. I also think that Darren loves the *real* Ginger, not the love-sick version she portrays around Ian, hence why he doesn't reciprocate at the movies. He prefers when she is comfortable around him as herself, rather than her trying to change aspects to seem more attractive. I haven't watched the show in many years, but that's my take on it!

I’ve seen many (and have had a few myself) real-life friendships like this so I don’t find it unrealistic that Ginger wouldn’t drop Dodie as a friend. Ginger doesn’t really seem the type to cut people out of her life. She’s very forgiving. Dodie’s been her friend since childhood, so they’ve developed an emotional bond all those years, even if it’s not necessarily a healthy one. There are additional social ties too-Macie is friends with both of them and Ginger and Dodie’s brothers are best friends. Breaking their friendship might place Macie, Carl, and Hoodsie in an awkward situation, which Dodie might not care about but Ginger would. Their age is a rough one too. Losing friends at that age can feel like the world is ending, especially for girls that aren’t popular. Ginger would have been risking isolating herself even further and being seen as a loser/loner. Their friendship has been status quo for half their lives and it’s never easy to break status quo, especially as a kid.

It was interesting to see so many subversions to the "mean rich kid" trope within the same cartoon, instead of it being used to create a bigger divide between the characters.

I always thought I never watched too many Ginger episodes, yet I actually remember most of the ones you discussed. The "pituitary gland" one I remember because, weirdly, not long after I saw that episode we learned about that gland in my seventh grade science class. Back to the video's subject, I'm actually really surprised at how well they portrayed romantic feelings at that age. Every year in junior high, I had a crush on someone, and in 7th/8th grade, the girl I crushed on was fully aware of it. In sixth grade, my crush moved away during the summer and when I found out, I actually cried. Like, to the point where my mom had to console me and tell me about the time a boy broke her heart in high school. In eighth grade, I slow danced with a girl but was so nervous about putting my hands on her hips, I just let them hang down - I'm still embarrassed by that one. Romance and love can be so confusing at that age, and Ginger captured it so well. One of these days I'm going to have a dedicated full watch of the whole series.

I’m a ‘96 baby so I grew up with As Told by Ginger but I was never a big fan of the show. I’d say because it was aimed at older audiences, the show didn’t really speak to me (except for the Carl and Hoodsie plotlines) But I gotta say after your video, im curious as to how this whole story unfolds. Thanks again for all your hard work and for making this Nick Kid nostalgic in the best way possible!

1:19:03 Hot Take: Courtney was in love with Ginger, and did things to hurt her at times because she found her crush confusing and abnormal. (I'm bi. I've both had and witnessed similar experiences in middle school. This is just my interpretation.)

I just wanted to say I'm loving the As Told By Ginger content! Its a really good show that, for some reason, I didn't really like all that much when it was airing. I only really got into it by watching re-runs of the show after it was cancelled, so I only ever saw a handfull of episodes. But from what I remember, I really liked the character development/relationships I saw forming, and I love to see you discussing those stories! I'm very excited for the next part! This show really does have allot to talk about. As you proved, you can easily talk for hours just about Ginger and Darren's relationship, and so many other characters in the show have chemistry like that. Courtney and Miranda, Dodie and Macie's relationship with Ginger, Carl and Hoodsies rivalry with Blake, there are so many great character dynamics in this show to talk about.

Dude you won’t believe how much I wanted to see this cartoon in your channel!!! I’m so happy right now, I was going through a really rough time in my life right now, my mother passed away last year, and I feel so depressed and in a deep grief. The thing is that me and my mom used to LOVE this cartoon back in the days when I was around 4-5 years old, we were watching it together and I’ve been rewatching it now alone. It warms my heart to see Ginger and her mom having a good time together in some episodes, considering that Louis really reminds me of my own mom, they’re both funny, understanding and sometimes tough single mothers. This cartoon is just my soft spot, that reminds me of good old times. Thank you so much for making my days brighter now with this comfort little universe of Ginger Footley.

The only thing I have in common with this show is I had it rough in junior high too. I was not a cute kid when I had to get glasses at age 7 and it didn’t help when I had to get braces too. To be fair, a lot of my classmates were the same, but that only begs the question, why did they treat me so poorly when they didn’t look that different!? Once I got contacts in 8th grade, things started to change. Not at first mind you, it happened gradually, like at first they wondered where my glasses went but didn’t treat me any differently. Then after a few months, a few girls who never talked to me much started to, guys who were mean to me started to leave me alone, and I won’t lie, I enjoyed every minute of it. Unlike Darren who instantly gained rockstar status after getting his…whatever that thing is on him removed. Junior high kids are cruel, weird, and moody. One day they act like they want nothing to do with you, and the next they’re treating you like a buddy. I think we can all agree junior is the worst time of your life unless you’re already really attractive or puberty kicks in and you suddenly become attractive. I think this show properly showcased how bad a time it is because they’re are kids like Miranda who are looking to tear you down. The thing is, like me with my bullies, I didn’t realize it at the time but deep down, they were afraid of me just like Miranda is intimidated by Ginger. They didn’t want me to get confidence, cause that means I’d be stealing their spot light. So my advice to anyone who has kids currently or someday, when they get to junior high, I urge you to advise them to never let anyone treat them like crap! Tell them that people who want to bring you down are only doing it out of fear, because while they’ll never admit it, they’re jealous and wish they were like them! Don’t be like me who just stood there and took it, they’ll grow into an insecure introvert like me. It’s important they gain confidence in themselves at that age!

Just recently subscribed. I really enjoy your analyses, they are great to listen to while working on my own projects, and then watching it again later for a bit more focused viewership. This show aired on Nickelodeon and at the time I was more heavily invested in Cartoon Network shows. Especially "As Told By Ginger" felt like a bit too much of a "Girl's show" at the time, so I tended to only watch it if there was nothing more on. It's nice to look at it and see not only what I missed, but learning about the deeper themes.

Saying thanks for covering this show as I really love this show (ATBG). I also always respect your opinion and it doesn't harm that you share the same name as my younger brother (although he spells his Shaun). However, I do disagree that Courtney was a bad person. I grew up with this show and Courtney always seemed quite kind hearted but very naieve. This is shown more in the two Camp Caprice specials. She also was brought up wealthy but wants to try new things (like when she had the sleepover). I just don't think you can call Courtney a "bad" person without calling Darren a "bad" person. Hopefully it's okay to disagree with you because I very genuinely like and appreciate your reactions, this show is just extremely special to me. Thanks

Hey, friend! Sorry it took me a while to respond. I'm starting to catch back up with my SuperThanks now! I totally agree with you. Courtney is a very complex character who has a lot of different layers to her personality. She's not all bad, for sure! I plan on digging further into that in a video that I'm planning to make about her later on. Darren on the other hand... Oh, man. Don't get me started hahaha. He's portrayed very nice and supportive in this season, but BOY does that end up changing a toooon lol. I really appreciate your support, my friend. :D I value everyone's opinion, even if it's contradictory to mine

This was one of my favorite shows. I don’t think that Courtney had a crush on Ginger (even if there’s talk about her being originally written that way). Because with that logic, Miranda and Mipsy did too or Blake had one on Carl. All of them were infatuated with her. Courtney was sheltered and found Ginger’s life fascinating because it seemed so normal versus her prim and polished upbringing. Also, Ginger never tried too hard. She was just herself. That’s what ticked off Miranda and why she would go out of her way to bully Ginger. Ginger was naturally likable. Also, Miranda was insanely jealous, but Miranda doesn’t actually like Courtney. She’d play #2 to whomever was the most popular. We see that with Hope taking over. It’s a friendship of convenience. She doesn’t have friends otherwise. I wish we’d gotten more background for her, honestly.

I have seen this cartoon “As told by Ginger” back when I was young and I also knew that this cartoon has a very deep meaning, but I didn’t know that it had a deeper meaning that I expected. I was surprised that this show tackled several real life issues or struggles that any teenagers would have including having crush and also having hard time telling about someone specific. I almost completely forgot all about this cartoon until I saw your video, even if I do remember some other cartoons at that time like Hey Arnold and Angry Beavers and CatDog just to name a few, but besides SpongeBob SquarePants and The Fairly OddParents. I do want to say thank you for mentioning this show and explain all about it and even go into more detail or show a very deep meaning behind this cartoon, even if this video is just mentioning some episodes of Season 1 of this

I remember wanting to talk about it when it was airing but too embarrassed to admit I was watching it. I went nuts then gave up nick all together once it disappeared from decent time slots.
