For the second question, I find myself looking at friends and other people who are dating, married, have kids (not that that is a goal of mine) or own a home together. While here I am, 33, been single for a long time. But looking at it in a different way, I have a bed to sleep in, I have clothes to wear, I have a roof over my head, I have food in my refrigerator, I have a car to get around if I want to and I have a job that pays all my bills. Life is about perspective.

Gavin saying it'd be interesting if age wasn't tracked, blew my mind. Like, nowadays, how old you are is so important. People ask you how old you are, all your IDs say it, it's on resumes, it's so everywhere. But if you didn't know someone's age and it wasn't even a thing people cared about much, you'd just judge by what they've done or are doing or planning to do. Interesting.

I'm honestly jealous of people who still live with their parents. I'm also 26 and living on my own but I find myself wanting to move back in with my parents all the time. I moved out at 22 shortly after graduating from university, and I do think it was what I needed at the time because I felt like a burden and was terrified at the thought of being dependant on my parents forever (I was not a burden and my parents are happy to support me however I need), but it is such a struggle sometimes. I don't even want to think about how much money I could have saved or how much less I would have to work so I could do more of what I enjoy. There are a lot of benefits to my current living situation but what I wouldn't give to come home to dinner being made for me once in a while...

The concept of independence being equated to living alone/away from your childhood home is so American. As a filipino, it's very normal to stay with our family up until our 30s or even for life (my childhood home consisted of my great grandpa, my grandma, my parents and my sis and I), I know the same principle applies to Italians, Serbians, Russians ...etc, where there's an innate need/want to stick close to family even after moving out. It's only in America that I have heard this push to leave at 18 for no other reason aside from "independence". But you can be independent living in your childhood home. Observing my friends struggle through their 20s because they want to be "independent" or their parents kicked them out is so sad because living in a rundown apartment in which you have to pay 3/4 of your minimum wage paycheck every month, and eating stale pizza three weeks in a row doesn't sound like independence at all, they don't know they're victims of a capitalistic society.

I think living at home can be fine but I disagree with the fact of just not having a plan and “enjoying your time.” If someone is past 20 and living at home the person should have some kind of goal for the future like Gus mentioned. It could be little steps but have some kind of goal for the future and your future success. I am 36 now but had to live on my own since 17 due to circumstances but even to the age of 20 it was not sustainable for me so I ended up joining the military and since then I have never had any issues with affording housing. Obviously it’s not for everyone and I am not trying to build it up for everyone. It has its own challenges but they do start you off living in dormitories to force you to interact with others and ensure you have the financial knowledge to live either with roommates, a significant other, or on your own. Just my two cents!
