    i really thought it was funny when the game told you not to hit the ball over the cliff. the devs clearly wanted you to, and the body near the hole was meant to be like "oh shit i think I just murdered a man with my eldritch golf passions," but playing the whole the 'correct' way, you just find a dead body there and its obvious you werent the one who killed him. idk, i just thought it was funny

The incredibly threatening "I know" and "I'm not done" kind of answers, along with the incredibly intense way the protag stares down other people just really makes the protag feel like the monster. I guess at the end, it turns out the protag isn't human after all, with the way that eldritch god talks to them

    This looks like a genuinely good game to me. It starts out with the basic golf, adds in the vampire stalkers mechanics, then twists with the world of darkness. The statue people are creepy with twisted smiles. The flashing visages when you're in the dark is superb. And this is all before you see the face of the god entity. PLUS a boss fight that brings back chipping your shots to hit up in the tree, new root spikes, and adds a vampire back in to juggle. AND A MUSICAL NUMBER?? The dev is really killing it with the facial expressions on these people. From the golf course attendants that look terrified as you talk to them, to the malicious eyes of the Greener Grass employees. Just an amazing experience all around.

    26:38 Honestly, this moment and what Manly said made me think about something. There've been a lot of studies and such written on how people familiar with games play games versus people who don't really play games, and I think this is one of those moments. I know I get kinda antsy like Manly did here when a game seems to hitch out of nowhere, especially in a seemingly not-tense moment, that recognition of "oh the game is loading something that's taking extra processing" that just has you waiting for the shoe to drop of some boss around the corner, or the chaser enemy spawning in, or some such. And now I kinda wanna know if any horror games have played with that idea intentionally, or that I'd like to see one that did. Just a few moments throughout the game, doing something like loading some huge garbage asset just out-of-bounds to make the game hitch a little during a tense moment to make the player freak out, or have the chaser enemy be ever-so-slightly notable as causing that sort of load-in lag, only for one appearance of it to suddenly not have that. Just, little meta things that don't break the fourth wall narratively, but mess with the player's preconceptions as people who have the subtle, unintentional instinct based on experience with hardware limitations and such. The kinda thing that wouldn't be picked up by John Doe from Iowa deciding to play a spooky game for a change since he likes horror movies and he *did* get that new pc for work last month... It's kinda cool when games take "genre savvy" and use it for new levels of engagement that won't get a rise out of the *entire* audience, but will hit twice as hard for the part that gets it, so I'm curious about that aspect now that it's been sorta been brought into focus. Anyway, great video as always Manly, thanks for giving me a cool game thing to think about this week on top of a nice, long LP to watch

    This is the kind of concept that would make for a one trick pony. It is good when you write it out as an idea, but imagine a full length experience where the thing of the matter is "you think this will happen but I am just messing with you“. As a 20 minute joke submission there exists potential, but otherwise providing such niche idea will serve to make a few laugh and a lot to complain about laggy video game.

  • @JacklynBurn

    @JacklynBurn

    @@Hanako44 Oh, I wasn't thinking in terms of if the game was *only* that, but rather, if that was something incorporated into another game. Like a full-on, fully developed and structured horror game, but with a few extra bits here and there like what I mentioned, as opposed to that being the main gimmick. Like you say, some loading tricks are far from enough to fill a game, but they could heighten the experience of a game that's ready got a lot of atmosphere and story to it.

    It is a shame Manly didn't catch what the Cliff Wall was. I think the "Accident" is suppose to be a tutorial for how to handle the threats. Which is why the threats seemed so excessively oppressive and often more obnoxious then threats. I think when you get the light balls and meet the threats again it is suppose to escalate as a tutorial for the climax. Or not.

    The main character reminds me of Hunters on Old World of Darkness. Essentially an empowered normal humans who can sense supernatural and have strange abilities that makes them able to defeat the inhuman (like The Judge type who can dominated weaker beings and literally sentence a vampire to not eat humans, otherwise they would expose; or Waywards, who are essentially hunter psychopaths that terrorise both the supernatural and mundane alike, they will blow up a hospital if it means to kill 1 or 2 high ranking vamps). Hunters tend to be strange, act a bit weird and both humans and supernatural feel uncomfortable around them. Only thing is, I don’t remember the messenger coming down to one of them and be like “here is a golf club, go to town on the local lovecraftian horror”… but it might be somewhere in the lore.

    I love seeing responses with theories and pointing out details. I just thought that the protag was suspicious, I didn't even notice the expressions! [Reasoning below] Normally, when you get caught doing something you're not supposed to (especially if you can possibly get into a lot of trouble), you would try to get out of trouble, right? Saying stuff like, "Oh, I didn't know! I'm sorry, must've slipped my mind. Oops, I thought it was okay!" Anything to avoid getting truly caught, *especially* against people that can get you in trouble. But you get the option to just state, _"I know."_ No backpedaling, no denial, no promising to leave, just a statement. You know you're not supposed to be there, you know you should leave, but you know that _you're not going to._ But yet, you still get to golf with no consequences. The security guard just. Accepted it. And *_left._* No further comments, no more questions. I didn't even think about how the guard might be scared, or how the protagonist might be acting while talking... makes a lot more sense, lmao

    bit of the lore stuff I got from other channel. The protagonist are possessed by American Nature god, who use his obsession in golfing to get him into the golf course. The Golf course belong to invasive nature god from Europe due to the invasive trees and grasses from the Europe planted in the golf course by the club, the god that possess the protag is using him to kill those trees and banish the invasive god from the land. Proof? 1) If you jump into the water, you get the caption of "This body can not swim" 2) When the god confront you, it said "I now realize who I am talking to, I will have your dinner too" assuming the dinner mean the land our god reside on. 3) In the ending, nature god did its thing and stopped possessing the protag, you can see his thought font changed.

The evil god, after recognizing you, says "your suit of flesh is fragile" Then, after it's over, you wake up. The text wonders how you got there... and it's in a different font than what we've seen all game. Speculation, you were a normal person possessed by an angelic entity (or something similar) for the explicit purpose of slaying the Tree God.

They were so cinematic -- I especially loved 28:47, where the employee's question, "Are you okay?" is drowned out, but we can still read their lips and the protag is able to answer appropriately. (This is the moment I realized something incredibly odd was going on with the dialogue beyond the music ramping up.) The humans the protag speaks to are so unnerved -- it makes me wonder what the protag looks like as the tension builds.

Eventually, you stop trying to slowly aim the shot and just try to get the ball moving downrange while keeping them in your peripherals. It's masterful stuff.
