The name "Aava" in Finnish means "open". The name "Henri" means "Ruler of the Home" or "Lord of the House". "Lovi" as a Finnish word means "notch", but as a Finnish name it means "happy". It could also be a play on "Love". The word "Euneirophrenia" describes a peaceful state of mind that occurs after experiencing a pleasant dream. The word "Valveilla" is Finnish, and means to be awake when you are supposed to be sleeping. OK SO. The apartment above really is Henri's own apartment, both apartments having the number 31. But the above one is from the future/ an alternate reality, where he killed himself. But it's a made-up future that Henri imagined. The Peeker said that the mind wanders. It's Henri's fear of what his life will end up being. He's afraid he's going to kill himself out of lonliness eventually. He said he doesn't go out much, because the world has nothing for him. He has a blank picture frame in his home, suggesting he doesn't have any friends or family either, otherwise it would surely be filled with a photo. The game is literally called "Blank Frame". It's a game about Henri's lonliness. He's stuck in his apartment, and at the same time he's stuck in his lonliness. He has to reach out to strangers in order to escape both. He has awkward and unpleasant experiences because of it, but he also meets Aava. In the bad ending, Henri is stuck in his future apartment, he's literally stuck in his fear of the future, inevitably becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. In the good ending, Henri opens himself up to Aava by opening his window. At first the window is stuck, but then he manages opening it all the way. And in the end, Aava opens the door, freeing him from his future apartment. I'm not going to go into the rest of the metaphors, or else this comment would be way too long. But I assume the "monsters" are the embodiments of Henri's different fears. Even when a fake Aava was in her apartment, it was an embodiment of one of his fears. What if Aava is actually just repeating what he's saying, telling him what he wants to hear, because she's polite? But he manages to overcome his fears and lonliness. Aava puts it best: "It was all you. Trust me". Only you yourself can take the first step. Now Henri's blank frame won't stay blank for much longer.

The tall lady is a very important device in this story. It's sheer size and terrifying presence compared to all the other manifestations, combined with the clear symbolism of stereotypical feminine attraction (stockings, heels, cleavage) means that it's likely a metaphor for Henri's desire for the opposite sex, warped by his (implied) porn addiction and isolation, along with his overwhelming fear of pursuing real companionship. Not to mention that it always appears outside his bathroom window. The bathroom being a place of privacy where we see things like the porno magazine appear from the drain - as if he had tried to dispose of it but was unable to keep it away - and the fact that we can see the entrance to a sex shop or strip club through the window. And the man in the apartment across who spends all his nights watching porn, which Henri finds sickening. That man is of course a projection of Henri's own vices and how he feels about himself. Of course if he avoids his fear and runs away from the monster, he remains lonely, Aava is gone, and he eventually meets his fate alone and depressed at his own hands. There is clear symbolism of suicide throughout. The noose, of course. The message that appears as Henri brings the stool to the light fixture to adjust it, and of course that dangling monster thing that first shows up in the hallway. Notice how it hangs from the ceiling with it's "legs" dangling down in such a way. Such an evocative visual metaphor, I must say. A very chilling emotional representation of suicide. But alternatively Henri can face his fear, the warped and twisted abomination that he's created through his own avoidance and vices. First by opening the window to it, making himself vulnerable despite the obvious harm that it can cause, and then instead of fleeing through the door, fighting it by dropping the dresser onto it, and defeating it. After doing this, he moves to the apartment above which represents the hopeless fate he envisions for himself, and there he must confront his own suicidal tendencies. Once he successfully does this, Aava appears, allowing him to escape not only his lonely apartment that he was trapped inside, but also his hopeless fate within it. Allowing Henri to truly experience hope for himself and his future. At first I thought that this game was an incredible experiment in psychological horror, but the more I dig into it the more I realize how amazingly skilled the creator is at using metaphors for designing such an evocative experience. At it's core Blank Frame is about loneliness in the modern world and how a person can trap themselves in what seems like a hopeless situation, unless they face their fears and do what they need to do to free themselves. There are many ways that this concept can be communicated but the way the creator of this game did it was really spectacular. This is true art.

My interpretation is that one of the failed rituals from those junkies ended up creating something they slightly wanted but also didn't, a restless spirit taking advantage of their unnatural abilities but finds that one of their old neighbors is unsatisfied with life being cooped up and decides to try and push him to making his life better, even if its some pretty wrong ways to go about it like psychological terrorizing. Btw congrats to the creator for slowly but surely building up this tension towards the end. I had no fear but a huge amount of tension as people vanished from the streets, as Aava took too long to reach the grill, etc. In winter (when gets darker sooner), my fiancé has to go through a long, dark road without lights and buildings to get to work. I felt the same for Aava as she left her apartman, had this uneasy feeling if she's gonna be alright or something happens to her. Oh and for some reason I always imagine a "ruined ending" for good stories like this for my own amusement. You know, when a protagonist comes up with a simple idea and makes the whole story void. For example, Henri just turns back on the radio after the old man leaves, making him call the police on Henri. They then realise what's going on and call the fire department to bring some tools to move the cabinet. Yeah, I'm fun at parties... Anyways, good night!

As someone who struggles with depression and anxiety, I really connected with this game. Not just with the themes, but the presentation. The feeling of staying in the same room/rooms all day, staring out the window, watching others to about their lives. That was my favorite part I think. They didn't need too, but the game dev added people outside just doing stuff, when they honestly could have just left the outside empty. But it's that extra step in not only that area, but the whole game that I think elevates it. I also really adore how the dialogue is written. The interaction with Henri and the drunk girl outside stands out, because it feels like a real socially awkward person talking. Henri struggles to convey the point he's trying to make through words, how he can't flat out say "I'm trapped in my apartment can you get help" but instead awkwardly repeats "do you want to help me". Also, the color design in this game is very pretty and really adds to everything. Great work, R.L.

If you decide you act and be brave and take actions you drop the dresser down on the monster's hand. You get the girl and the happy ending. If you decide to leave the monster without taking actions meaning you just leave yourself with the fear and not doing anything about your life or even willing to improve yourself. I believe I got the ending on how to interpret it: So there are a few clues here and there that kind of tie into the ending. There was mention of how it could be "the beginning of the end" or the "end of the beginning" and how they cannot exist after the night. So in the first ending (or the second that Manly got) is showing the beginning of the end. The character remarks that this is what his life is leading towards, which is either death or some form of hanging himself in his closet. He mentions there something blocking the door on the 4th floor to the storage room. And all this is marking the beginning of how he will meet his end. In the second ending, Aava opens the door and tells him that he did it himself. And after stating they should go out and get something to eat after jesting with him about his accidental "advances". Adding on the fact that he states when in the 4th floor bed room that he needs to "do something about you". He's making the decision to make a change either about himself or his situation. This marks the end of the beginning, possibly towards his new life and actually going out. The decision of how you handle the "tall lady" almost seems to signify his decision to combat whatever ails him or just to fight back, since its the large glaring difference that you can choose to make that leads to the endings. As for the mention of how it cannot exist after the night, it would refer to the fact that when the sun finally rises, his choice for either ones will be made apparent. I don't particularly remember the other notes but there's a CRAP ton of symbolism. The flickering light on the sign saying "Missing Something?" on Ending 1. The noose in his storage room with the poster saying "Hang in there" (whatever it said to that notion); which has double meaning for either literally hanging in there or to keep pressing on. He hasn't died yet but his decisions will determine how his end will be.

The identical apartment upstairs is a showcase of what Henri’s life can be, and what he imagines it as in the future. A future where he remains lonely and kills himself. The “Peeker” I’m guessing is a metaphor for the “observer” type people in life. Silent, lonely, and uninvolved with anything, they sit in their corners and watch “outside the window” on how the force “Lovi” (Love) moves around the world. “Seekers” seek that force, and that’s the reason that guy upstairs says they do most of the heavy work. They seek love actively, whilst all the Peekers do is observe it from the side, letting it pass by without taking action themselves. And so, the Seekers find love eventually and live happy, whilst the Peekers continue to watch and watch as they let their chances to interact with Lovi pass by, continuing to be lonely. I’m guessing Peeker calls Henri the “Victim” and the “Source” because: 1. Henri’s a victim of the force of Lovi (Love), he has a crush on Aava, and that helps him out of his darkness (funny how Peeker calls Henri a victim for it, guess he sees Lovi as a bad force); and 2. Henri is the “source” of that future he saw upstairs, he’s what leads to that potential outcome of suicide if he lets his fear of interacting with people control the choices he makes in his life. The tall lady is a symbol of Henri’s fear of interacting with women because of his possible porn addiction (got this from another comment). He’s disgusted when he sees some guy in the next building watching porn - that’s him projecting; he finds a porno magazine in his toilet (might suggest that he tried to flush it away and it failed, clogging his toilet and coming back to him instead; there’s porn ads on the side of the neighboring buildings. Overall, sex is clearly a theme in this game, and Henri definitely has some sort of relation to it. When he gets the choice to fight off or run away from the scary lady, that’s a metaphor for him either choosing to confront his fear of women/his porn addiction, or choosing to run away from it, thus rotting away in that apartment above his. The cabinet that barricaded his door is a representation of Henri’s fear of a possible bad future; him having to push it away symbolizes the necessity for him to confront those dark thoughts and make a change in his life in order to not end up like that. To stop his loneliness/to get the cabinet out of the way, he needs to interact with and ask help from others, that being Aava (also “Aava” apparently means “Open” in Finnish, so that’s nice lol)”. When Henri thanks her for helping him get out, and she says “It was all you”, it represents how nobody could help Henri out of that loneliness but himself, and that without his own effort - nothing would have changed. Then he sees the light when Aava calls to him to go out, and blah blah the rest are all pretty obvious metaphors. This was a really great game, way more beautiful than I imagined it being. P.S: There’s a possibility that all of this might be going on in Henri’s mind since the beginning, so that’s dark lol… But, assuming you get the good ending, he still helps himself out of his loneliness (albeit, only in his head) by the end, so I guess that’s a hopeful message.

I love how wholesome Manly is. It's the little things, you know? "Wow, you gotta great throw!" "Catch...nice!" He's so kind he even encourages video game characters that can't hear him...or interact with him in any real way. I think it's a natural reflex he has. I'm not even sure he's aware of it.

@@namo5056 1. Initially I was going off of descriptions, but after playtesting it the image became much clearer. From there, we just did what felt right. However, for the current project we are not just working with this general mentality, we've also specifically taken some Finnish folklore songs as inspiration to several of the tracks. 2. I came in pretty late for Blank Frame, actually. Most of the prototyping had already finished and it was nearly done at that stage. Ever since, however, we've been working together for the music since the start and will continue to do so until the heat death of the universe, hopefully, haha! 3. Thank _you_ for your support of the game, we've all worked extremely hard and we're glad that people are enjoying it as much as they do! You can support us by buying the game and of course the OST itself is for sale on our Bandcamp.

This is one of the best games you've played in a while. I couldn't stop watching! It was just so engaging, and there were a lot of small things that gave it so much personality, like him not wanting to grab something out of the toilet with his bare hands, or you having to actually put the toilet seat down to get on it, or just the fact that he did not want to lose his eraser when throwing it to the window. Excellently made. Great job, developer!

I think there are two end results, the one with your neighbor saying you did it all yourself... is you fighting the "monster" and escaping it. You opened the door... she was just there waiting. While in the alt ending she doesn't show up... you never invited her. You don't face your monster and in turn it kills you. You become a ghost... and the individual you met speaks to you. You're getting one of two outcomes but each outcome is oblivious to the other... which makes sense. If you take your own life you wouldn't expect anyone to come for you, she'd abandon you like everyone/thing else. If you find light, then it is harder to imagine having taken your own life, possibly even being blissfully unaware of it. I think that is why there is no checkpoint either. ...you can't reload your save in something like this. You have to restart, suffer through everything, and make that decision again.

I also appreciate that you’re very thorough with games, allowing us to see the whole story. This game was actually really cool and entertaining. The visuals worked really well and there was a lot of cool world building. The interpretation was nice too, this game made me want to think more about the meaning. Thanks for playing it
