Here's the thing. Of course as the protagonist we're honed to think that the person stopping to help us might be a killer or something. But imagine being the one in the working car passing a broken down car on a desolate road in the middle of nowhere. You might help, but wouldn't you be extremely cautious as well, just in case it's a trap to rob you or maim you? It's a situation where circumstances justify both parties to not immediately trust each other.

Road safety tip: if, while driving, you ever come across any sort of a sudden obstacle that blocks the entire road (i.e. a few trees/trunks that seem easy to move out of your way, trash bins or just a lot of trash, road signs that aren’t supposed to be there and so on), just make a 180 and get out of there without exiting your car to remove the obstacle. Chances are that whoever placed those in front of you is nearby on the ready to ambush you the moment you leave your car. This game has reminded me of some tragic news that happen a lot because people hurry so much that they make rushed decisions without giving it a second thought. So stay safe people.

I've heard this is an urban legend and that there's no confirmed cases of someone "waiting" on the roadside next to obstacles in the road. But at the same time, I've also heard variations of this tale a lot from many separate sources, and it certainly _seems_ like something that could happen. Does anyone have a link to any news articles about this kind of thing? I'd like to be able to confirm whether this actually happens or not.

@@khunt5336 I only have anecdotes, but it definitely seems to be something that happens in developing countries, at the very least. Some of my coworkers from Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands have both explicitly warned us if you ever see trash or branches in the road to floor it, and also talked about times it's happened to them. Carjacking and violent crime is pretty common for them sadly. (One of the girls from Port Moresby would casually recount the times she had been mugged- once at machete point, the other at homemade shotgun point. Meanwhile all us white people are just there going 'WHAT THE FUCK')

For any young drivers out there, from someone who has run into the road block situation: Never get out to clear it if it looks purposeful. Two options being go back the way you came (even in reverse) or go over the blockade. You can worry about gas levels or car repairs later, when you're still alive. Even if you have a buddy with you, it could be a big group waiting off the side of the road, it isn't worth it to find out. Hell, if worse came to worse, drive into the group. They will move.

I also had a run in with a roadblock situation. I was driving around 1am on a lone country road in the middle of nowhere and came upon cut logs very purposely stood up on their ends across both lanes. As soon as I stopped, I heard movement in the trees off to my left, but it was so dark that I couldn’t see anything. I pulled my concealed carry pistol and expected trouble, but then noticed that whatever quiz kids had set up this ambush had forgotten to put logs across the wide grass shoulder on the right side. I just went around it and called a Sheriff’s Deputy friend of mine as soon as I got signal again. They were gone by the time he showed up, but he said he saw the logs I mentioned pitched into the weeds. No idea what that was all about, but I sincerely doubt they’d planned to jump out and sing Happy Birthday to me.

I see so many picking apart every inch of this game yet see no one commenting on the open trunk of the car in front of where the coffee machine was, the door that had someone peeking out of, etc. The moment I read that the manager's demeanor had changed, I completely expected him to toss the MC into it, which was likely the intention of whomever drugged her in the first place. Just an interesting little aspect I'm surprised I hadn't seen more people comment on given how much people focused on the coffee machine.

@Cloak of Amarillo I noticed all of those things, but regardless: who carries around a coffee machine in the trunk of their car in the hopes of finding someone to drug at a skanky motel? Nobody: that's who. If you want to drug someone, there are far less convoluted ways to do it. Examples: 1. Go do it at a bar. 2. Carry around a syringe of some strong benzodiazepine or barbiturate, or even scopolamine. This game was just badly written and I doubt it was based on real events.

  • @uncroppedsoop

Well it is kinda hinted to some gang that kidnaps people. That guy telling stories in the gas station could be one of them stalling you for this one to do something to your car so it would brake down later. Logs on the road would make you go out and waste time with them while your car gives out (because no one i seen play this game tried to turn it off, which is logical). It would take a few tries in this game to find out how many people could be involved but you would need to have a skeptical eye to everyone.

By the time it reached the motel part I was hiding behind my hands because I /knew/ it wouldn't turn out right, but I just couldn't predict /what/ would happen. everyone's mad at ghost coffee but i think this game actually really perfectly encapsulated that anxiety feeling of not knowing what the actual danger is and the dread and anticipation of when the inevitable threat is going to occur. like i was on the edge of my seat, will it be a hitchhiking danger? a ghost on the road, some kind of wendigo story? your room being invaded while you're asleep? i'm sure the story was embellished for the sake of gameplay experience and removing some linearity, but the realness of a young woman getting drugged and somebody trying to invade your room while you're vulnerable and cut off from help is horribly scary and way more relatable thus scarier than "creepy creature kills you." the hints at the supernatural were a great way to build anxiety and gaps in the main character's knowledge about her situation and the intent and meaning behind the other character's intentions/actions and oddities like her car breaking down and trees blocking a road on which you've *seen* another car go ahead of you on. it's a good way to make the player empathise with anxiety someone in a vulnerable, untrustworthy situation depending on strangers would experience, because the unknown and unexplainable is what supernatural horror and suspense relies on; it's not scary if you know everything about what you're supposed to be afraid of. sorry there wasn't a three minute slideshow presentation explaining the coffee machine and that it ruined the whole game for you. thanks for coming to my 3:00am ted talk, now go to bed

Totally agree. I haven't seen anyone mention this but on a more meta level the game doesn't even let us know what the actual gameplay mechanics are, which increases anxiety because we don't know what kind of horror game to expect. The description of the cola had me expecting that we would have to sprint from danger, while having to pay for stuff had me thinking that resource management would be a concern. So with things like only being able to carry 1 item in each hand. All these red-herrings and misleading gameplay hints help to make the player feel distrustful, beyond just the story stuff.

To be honest, this game perfectly encapsulates the visceral terror of being a stranded woman alone at night. _Everything_ feels like a potential threat and you're constantly on guard. I was driving home super late this one night, and got lost in some backwoods b/c my nav screwd me up. That was terrifying. Then I finally find my way route and realize gas was getting low. Took _forever_ to find a station that was open, and by the time I did I was desperate and near empty. Still in completely unfamiliar territory. So there I am, at a random unlit gas station, in a small, eerily silent and _completely_ unlit town out of desperation. I tried pumping my gas at the only functioning pump, but was so on edge that I hopped right back in my car and decided to just get back on the highway and keep driving until I broke down.....b/c that would've been better than the stuff my mind was conjuring up. By some freaking miracle, I actually stretched the tank to get me 99% home, and when the car finally ran out of gas, I just let it legit _roll_ on fumes until I came across a fully active Shell gas station in a safe area. Nearly cried, because I genuinely though I wasn't gonna make it home that night.

Being a woman alone at night is a truly terrifying experience. Just last night I was getting home in an Uber and my driver, who didn't speak my language, was taking a strange, unintuitive route. It was 4 in the morning, I was drunk and I legit thought I might have gotten into the wrong car and was getting my ass hauled all the way across the city to have unspeakable things done to me. Fortunately, it was only my late night alcohol-induced paranoia getting the best of me, and the navigation picked an odd route to get to my house. Still, it was very scary at the moment. Sucks that there are reasons for us to take every little thing as a threat.

Was the person hiding in our closet a dream? Why did the manager have pills in the room and why did we take them? I actually kind of like the disappearing coffee machine, but it'd feel more real if it was along side one or two other vending machines. I'd be easier to hide a fake with real ones, plus it would lean into the unreliable narrator (Did she get a coffee or was it something from another machine?). Plus I recognize that style of coffee machine, never seen it outside of a hotel/motel/truck stop, but it's never on its own.

Person hiding in the closet was probably a side effect of the drugged coffee; apparently the protag was being really loud as well, despite us not seeing anything; so it kinda adds up that it may have caused hallucinations among other things. The pills were probably in the table because it seems like the killer was known for doing this; so it makes sense the manager had time to place some in everyone's rooms just incase. I'm pretty sure the coffee machine was a straight up plant, although it might have been easier to hide it alongside real ones; it was probably necessary to be in a easily accessible location; or perhaps even right next to their room so they could pull it inside. Also, which it again being a fake machine, it doesn't seem too strange for it to be used in an unnatural way. Perhaps that was intentional to give the player a sense of "something's wrong, this shouldn't be here."

_She was already at risk texting while driving_ The moral of this - be prepared. If she hadn't needed to stop for gas, she would have been breezing along home. Motels are always creepy. I liked this one better than the first Fears to Fathom I think. The pacing was a bit off agree, but the being picked up by the stranger and motel parts made up for any slowness.

    A bit of a spoiler(?) for the video ! I genuinely got scared when the intruder popped out of the closet, it was something I really didn't expect and coupled with the loud noise really gave me a jump. I think it was because I was already initially suspicious of the closet but Manly opened it and there was absolutely nothing so it lulled me back into a false sense of security. I didn't expect for a jumpscare to happen at the closet a few seconds after he checked it ;;

Did this girl just found a random ghost coffe machine or did the stalker went through all the trouble on setting a drugged coffe machine and then took the entire machine out after she used it? Either way it's just too fanciful. Wish the end would have been more down to earth. I liked the home-alone kid story better. (Love your channel Manly! 1M subs!! :D)

I do wish for this set of "true story" horror games, they would choose more realistic stories and stick closer to how the person told them. This one is obviously not real (I can get being drugged by a coffee machine, but a ghost coffee machine that disappears after you drink from it? no....) plus the horror story cliches pull you out of it. If the character was being followed throughout the game and it climaxes in the motel by the character realizing someone has been stalking them since the gas station (which definitely has happened) and having the creepy guy try to break into the motel (also has happened) that would have been a creepier story than one with all the supernatural elements

And you do said games WAY before the bigger KZreadrs get a hold of the games and thus ruin the feel of them, you manage to preserve the feel of the games you play. A rare art.
