Wonder what a hold down would be like? Surfed 6-7ft before though never 8ft in the video. Someone should develop like a criteria for big surf. Like if you hold your breath for 1:00 you can surf 6ft ect. Though obviously it's hard to account for the psychology/mental strength required to stay claim in such conditions.

In the 80's I never, ever remember that"double up". I wonder if the region's recent history of large magnitude earthquakes has changed the topography of the ocean floor in that area of the bay? Fortunately it's possibly changed it for the better.

Yes definitely, the super tides probably? A lot of water moving. They say the millennium swell, ehmmm... Maybe just some biggest waves at Uluwatu?? I saw a video of Balangan and it wasn't even triple overhead... Haven't seen footage of impossibles neither... Can you confirm it wasn't the biggest ever except for Ulus??

At Thunders it wasn't really the TALLEST swell I've ever seen, nor the best in regards to the quality of the surf it produced. The may 2007 swell is still the best one I've seen. But this swell was unique in how thick waves were and how much speed they seemed to have. That should be a good thing, but in the swell's case, something about it made places i saw in the southern mentawais area not really do what they can do. They were hitting weird areas of the reefs, and just generally making things mostly washed out but with the odd good clean set. But it wasn't like the regs couldn't handle the swell bcse I've seen them hold bigger. I never even checked a forecast or report, so i am just judging the direction by how it was hitting the reefs. In the spots that like west swell. It seemed too south. But at the nearby spot that needs straight south swell, it wasn't even hitting the right pay of the reef. The wave wasn't even working. So weird. This is a wild guess, but it was almost like there were two really big swells from slightly different directions hitting at the same time. Sometimes theydlink up and makevthe crazyvthick waves that went really mentah but weird. The odd few slipped through and created good surf for a set, then it would be a washing machine for 30 minutes or so. Pretty weird. At the reefs i saw, it wasn't the swell of the millennium, but I'm pretty sure every reef has its own set of ideal parameters, so its certainly possible that it was "best ever" somewhere out there... Nias looks like it was hucking out some good ones, it was taller in the 2007 swell but that was pre-drone angle so i can't speak on the thickness. But the chef on the charter boat sans souci got a shot dropping in on a wave that seems bigger than these. But its a different angle, impossible to say. Same with JOB's vid.... So much is shot from the beach, none from a drone, hard to compare things you didn't actually see. (like all these waves from land as well as drone and all job's vid's waves from land and drone.)....i wasn't in nias for either of these swells but i was in mentawais for both swells and the job video's swell wasnt as thick and gnarly but it was way cleaner and consistently from thebsame direction. This swell in this video- like I said, it was like two swells hitting at once and created some gems but mostly weirdness.

2:02 the difficulties of surfing with other people... guy deeper inside goes for it and gets pitched.. the guy further outside had the better drop in but rules are you give the wave to whoever is inside. It's hard to judge a fast moving steep hollow wave but if that guy would have just dropped in he would have had the wave for sure
