Honestly, everyone is entitled to listen to whatever music they like, even if it is for the fun of nostalgia. It doesn’t matter lol and I wish we would stop seeking validation for it too. That’s the whole point of being an individual and in a true sense “not giving a damn” about mainstream opinion (i.e. “true” rock). There are plenty of rock musicians and many metalheads who enjoy pop and it’s not even about the technicality. It’s just what they bloody like.

Sum 41's music is under-appreciated. They write music they think sounds fun, and if the songs resonate with people, great. They've described their intention in writing music as not wanting to reinvent the wheel or anything like that, rather wanting to put some cool new rims on it. Not to mention they are no slouches when it comes to their instruments, and Deryck is fantastic with sound production+song writing. I really appreciate how they have fun, but also talk about real and serious everyday problems. Sucks that we won't get any more of their music, but at least they're going out on a high note.

I wasn't a huge fan, but always got annoyed by how much shit Green Day got by people in the late 90s. "they're not real punk". My dude, they came up playing DIY venues and were part of their local scene. "they're sell outs". yeah, like literally, their indie label couldn't physically keep up with the demand. and when they hit big, they were constantly talking about the other bands they came up with. What more do you want from them? Sure, they're catchy, but so were the Ramones, and you all fall over for them. in the 90s (and still) I was more of a Bad Religion/SNFU fan, but "One Of My Lies" is still a great song

I'm gonna 🤓☝ Fall Out Boy, The Used and My Chemical Romance were some of the bands that created 3rd wave emo. Once signed to bigger labels, they worked with the same producers that created the Green Day pop-punk wave and took that underground sound on their first records to their follow-ups in Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, From Under the Cork Tree, ect. Their "screamy" vocals more came from "screamo" hardcore or "skramz" which emerged in hardcore as a response to hardcore's prevailing macho attitude. ...Whereas Panic at the Disco and Paramore were inspired by that already established 3rd wave emo pop sound. "Second wave, third wave emo" if you will. Just like Glam and Grunge and Pop-punk and NuMetal, there is no hard "line" between mall-emo and emocore. Just look at the Blood Brothers for example. Very pop-inspired music with glowing aesthetics made by a nu-metal producer, but generally regarded as small-label, independent and associated with those pre-myspace "skramz" bands with an incredibly abrasive sound. It's a spectrum :3

My bandmates and I were partially convinced it was ironic as we also enjoyed bands like Animals As Leaders, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Brains and all sorts of other genres. Pop punk only became a bad word when bands started getting big in the 90's. Sloppy Seconds is as punk and as pop as they come and they've always had a huge following, and they've been going since the mid 80's. The Queers, The Crowd, Mr T Experience, all of them from the 80's or earlier. Punk isn't all Discharge and Black Flag, there's a strong lineage going back to the original rock'n'roll sound. I'm so glad you pointed out that what most people think emo is is nothing more than pop punk with heavy eyeliner than the post punk emotional hardcore it started out as.

Punk and pop punk definitely has a connection to 50’s rock and roll. You can totally hear and trace the lineage. Even the style and image of 50’s greaser, in the US, Rockers in the UK, and teenage delinquents, and James Dean type rebels would have some influence on early punk. The power chord was invented around that time, which is pivotal to punk. In some ways punk was kind of a return to basics musically, a return to rock and roll, before it was so huge and commercial, but also more raw and fast and energetic and DIY. Bands like the Ramones have basically said as much but also with lot of 60’ garage rock and Girl pop group music. Other band a have said similar things. Punk evolved out of mid-late 60s garage rock, which it self was a sort of return to basics but raw, fast high energy and kinda DIY in a way. After the British Invasion, everyone started bands in their garage with friends sometimes would get to record and some bands would get a minor hit song. There’s a lot of obscure bands from that era that’s pretty interesting. Anyway rant over lol, there’s a reason it’s often called Proto-punk.

I realize I'm getting old. My first legit punk record I bought was Descendents "Milo Goes to College" (well, the Two Things at Once compilation) back in 1992. Discovering Bad Religion wasn't long afterwards. And then throw in the fact I saw Offspring play live in 1993 (only because my roommate's band was opening), and you get pretty much all I need from "pop punk". I mean, I did listen to a lot of those Epitaph bands back in the 90s because I was a cranky male in his 20s, but outgrew most of them. Pretty much from 2000 onwards, I have no connection with whatever was being branded as pop punk. After seeing this video, I say "Thank goodness, now where's my Descendents record?"

Pop punk is actually quite a diverse genre, as there's many different types of pop punk. For instance, you have: Surf punk-leaning pop punk (Ramones, Buzzcocks) Speedy pop punk (Green Day, Blink-182) Emo-tinged pop punk (Paramore, Jimmy Eat World) Teen pop punk (5 Seconds of Summer, Olivia Rodrigo) And so on.

Yeah the stigmatisation of punk becoming mainstream makes zero sense, look at the Clash in the 70s, they changed their style every album to appeal to different audiences and are praised for doing so and seen are pioneers yet Green Day hardly changed their sound in the 90s just signed to a major record label and they got tons of shit for it. Then again that's probably cos punk in the 90s was strictly underground. Either way Green Day and Offspring are not in the same boat as blink 182, sum 41, all time low, Good Charlotte etc

  • @Joobaiyes

Yeah, Green Day and The Offspring still had the punk ideology, the others did not. It’s also weird seeing the likes of My Chemical Romance and The Used being compared to the ones you mentioned and other ‘emo’ bands. MCR were only seen as the same genre as say Fall Out Boy because they both had similar fanbases, despite one being much more inspired by thrash metal and punk than the other.

Can't forget in between the golden age and the TikTok era, there was that early 2010's wave that brought us the likes of The Story So Far, Neck Deep, State Champs, Real Friends, etc. Seeing those bands build the kinds of audiences they did always looked really cool and kind of wholesome to me. And that's why it was always difficult for me to believe that pop punk ever really fell out of style.

as someone who loves 2000s pop punk, i can say that fall out boy was still making some good music that evolved more into alt rock/pop rock during 2010s and came back to their pop punk with their album from last year. paramore did a similar thing, except went alt rock/pop rock to alt pop and then back to pop punk sound. tho panic! is completely dead and i’m not mad lmao.

Speaking of your points in the last part of the video, did you know The Clash's manager only hired Paul Simonon because of his looks? He was super hot so manager Bernie Rhodes asked him to join despite him being unable to sing or play any instrument. Simonon never fully learned to play bass and a session musician replaced him on most of the albums. Check out the book The Clash On The Clash for more information on that. Simonon wrote Guns of Brixton though so he wasn't completely useless
