An Idiot's Guide to Static Grass

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

After attempting to use static grass on our logging railroad we realized we were not getting it right! What went wrong????? Well, we figured that out...
After watching like 25 videos on static grass here on KZread we felt we were ready to buy the Woodland Scenics static grass applicator and make great-looking grass on our layout. After a test, we felt good about making long grass on our 1:20.3 logging railroad. BUT the first attempt looked like a haystack!! Total fail! We tried adjusting everything.. BUT still no joy...
THEN the first clue, the grass needs to be made on a mostly flat level surface. As the static grass applicator needs to be close to the surface, and the static grill mostly level, so the rocky hilly terrain of the model railroad was not conducive to applying static grass directly on the rocks.. Trees were also a problem. As were structures. The grass needed to be applied on flat open areas. OR made on a sheet and cut and applied.
Long fibers were a problem. They want to fall over. How to keep them standing tall? Our friend and wonderful Sn3 scale modeler, Doug Jolly put us onto a clue... You can "pull" the grass up with the applicator after shaking some out into a THIN layer of glue. We also found that thin passes of grass were better than one big pass of a lot of grass. AND long fiber can be pulled up with a vaccume while the glue is still wet. Then stray fibers removed with the vaccume after the glue is completely set.
Applying long grass fibers over a layer of short fibers is a great way to get natural tall grass. BUT the same techniques need to be used when adding the tall grass. Except in this case, small "lumps" in the glue work best. So the tall grass is only in clumps between the areas of short grass....
ANYWAY, we now have a system and the skills to make reasonable, passable scale grass on our large-scale railroad.

That really depends on scale. Large scale like this you can get crazy with detail. Smaller scales like HO or N it is not as necessary for a great scene.

Make sure you start by putting some grass down on a flat surface. Just a piece of wood or whatever. Make your mistakes there. Then make sure when you move over to the layout there’s nothing in the way. Nothing vertical. No scenery no trees no structures in the area where you’re working where that really messes everything up.

I too had great difficulty using my Woodlands Scenic Static Grass applicator. Changed two things, threw away the battery and used the Charger adapter pack, much better results. Then threw away the cast foot (its useless) and use T Pins into glue ( in lots of places) and make sure glue is all around the T Pins for good contact. Keep moving cable from one T Pin to the next as you move along. Sooo much better. I also have a poo bag and use it all the time for a great random grass look. Keep having fun. Rod.

A great video, and a lot of good tips. I model in N scale, so really only use the 2mm and 4mm most of the time, but do occasionally use the 7mm and have also noticed the problem of the grass falling over. I will be definitely trying your tips on my next application. A tip for you (and I picked up this tip from Martin Welberg who also sells those grass mats) and this is apply your glue (I use a 50/50 mix of Mod Podge and water) using a well worn brush, but dab the brush so that it creates small patches of glue - do not try to cover the entire area with the glue. Then apply your first layer of grass, for me the 2mm grass. Vacuum and allow to dry. Then repeat the dab glue and apply the next level of grass (in my case the 4mm). I have built up some great grass effects with multiple layers of grass using this process. For my 4mm, I often mix some of my grasses before the application, and even mix in some 7mm. The 7mm seems to stand up better in these cases, probably because the charge on the 4mm helps keep the charge on the 7mm.

Great video and once seeing the trouble you had where the longer grass layed flat. I've watched several tutorials abt doing static grass and they insist you start off w the shorter grass 1st. And the next pass put the longer grass and so on to lastly using the longest to get the desired thickness/length you want. Once we move into our new home I'll be starting on my new h.o.scale layout in one of the spare bedrooms. I'm getting antsy and wish the process would move a little faster to get moved in. Anyways, thanks for sharing this video and I'm viewing it from the 1st state of DELAWARE.

Your video has given me hope! I've had my frustrations as well. I tried out my Static King tonight, and have been wondering whether it's broken. But I think I'm just going through what you've gone through. I deal in shorter lengths of grass, and just like you I wondered whether the 2mm stuff wasn't standing up -- or was just too short for me to notice. I gave it a closer look, and I think it's working -- so it'll be Round 2 in the morning!

I model N Scale and use 2 & 4mm exclusively and also use my poo mix exclusively. I have given up using static grass on inclines, instead I make my own tufts and use them. I have a small sheet of aluminum (I don't know why I have it) I put various sizes and shapes of Elmer's on the metal flatten them a bit with a brush, clip the alligator clip tp the edge and shake rattle and roll. Let it dry overnight and you can easily scrape them up with a razor blade and glue them wherever. The comb? "What am I supposed to do with this?" I don't even know where it is. I also gave up on 9v batteries, they get weak and the grass sleeps. Everybody has a box full of wall warts find a wart that fits, just try and not get tangled in the wires. I am now a Static Grass Addict, I love it.

We made our own applicator with an electronic fly swatter and a kitchen tea strainer. The bowl shape of the tea strainer has advantages over the flat screens. The flock drops toward the center of the strainer. This allows a focusing effect. It might help you get better control on sloped surfaces.

Ok that explains it. Love Elmers but their “school glue” is crap. Yet seems sort of like woodland scenics. Yet the school glue is better for dilute glue for scenery. Acrylic. That figures.

It seems that you don't use a power supply but just a battery. This will limit the Static King a lot. I use an old Braun razor power supply, as it is the same voltage (I needed to connect the correct plug). WS sells one but it is very expansive for what it is. With the power supply, 12mm grass is working OK, the biggest issue is that I have quickly a ball of grass inside the Static King, and I need to separate it. I didn't have success with two layers, so the max height I have is 12 mm (which is OK in O scale). But I use several lengths, first 12 mm, then 7mm and finally 4 or 2 to fill in. Like Luke Towan, it is possible to apply just patch of glues for the long one, and then add more glue around for the smaller length, this give a varied length field.

Whenever I did scenery to get different grasses and dirty to stick to the walls of mountains I would cut a pc of cardboard from a cereal box and shape it like a tapered shute and you can control what you are dropping onto walls of mountains and you can slightly blow the grasses at the area that you want to coat that particular part of the mountains or hills but only pour a small amount at a time so you are in control of what you are coating.

DEPENDING on IF you are using a battery OR the adapter also depends on the results one will get. The battery STINKS for doing 7-12mm grass, not enough power to stand it up. A TRICK IF you do not have the adapter, after cleaning off excess grass with sock over vacuum, go back over it without a sock and it pulls it back up more and NO loss of grass.
