An F-35 just fell off a carrier, right next to China. Who’ll get to it first?

This newsflash video talks about the recent crash of an USN F-35C into the South China Sea. Just hundreds of miles off Chinese coast. Full of sensitive
technology, it's bound to spur a race. Will China or the US be the one to get to it first?

I'm surprised that with the sensitive nature of these aircraft the US Navy doesn't have a ship carrying specialized equipment for just such a incident. I would think they'd begin trying to retrieve the aircraft immediately and treat any actions by a foreign nation as hostile.

Actually, it's a common misconception that losing an aircraft and/or ejecting ruins your flight career. It does not. Only if you were found to be unsafe and/or incompetent is that a guaranteed (...well, sometimes not even then) end to your flight career. The United States government spends literally millions of dollars on schooling and training for pilots. They generally don't want to flush that resource down the drain because it's not guaranteed you'll get another quality pilot in their place. There's also the issue that it could be that it was entirely not the pilot's fault and it was something to do with the tailhook, arresting wire or ground crew. We won't know until an investigation is done.

Most planes in the oceans went down honorably because they were downed by enemy planes or ship-based or land-based anti-aircraft guns in the past world wars. The F-35 just went down in the Mediterranean Sea, in the Sea of Japan, and now the South China Sea without being shot. It is so advanced that it is also submersible. It is also so stealthy that the U.S. navy will have a hard time finding it underwater for recovery.

It can be somewhat followed with sonar, but not 5km deep, and once it rests on the sea bed, it's extremely difficult to find it. the currents can sweep it several kilometers in any direction. plus the carrier was moving at the time. it's not so simple to just go straight down where it went in the drink and find it. it could be anywhere in a 20+ square kilometer grid... it's like a needle in a hay stack.

Even parts can be used to reverse engineer design concepts which reveals the military's approach to design. But really, the main problem with your suggestion is that missiles don't actually work under water. Torpedoes do, but they don't obliterate the target and aren't meant to attack targets sitting at the bottom of the ocean. Their effectiveness at neutralizing "evidence" is questionable.

actually a pretty thought provocing question. No missle can be guided to hit a plane in the water... All "anti plane" missles have proximity fuse. All "anti big stuff" missles can't fire that close. Anti submarine stuff now adays are all sound guided torpedos. Only thing that can destroy it are 5inch guns or guided bombs

I think that if there were a situation where US and Chinese ships were right next to each other over the plane, the US would just destroy the F-35 so China can't get it. It's an expensive piece of equipment, but in the grand scheme of things, the price of 1 F-35 is a tiny drop in the bucket of the military's budget. It would be a national embarrassment to have to blow up an expensive asset, but that's nothing compared to the embarrassment we'd face if China actually managed to salvage that plane.

They basically know exactly where the plane is. The problem is it's not like a ship where it's going to mostly go straight down it's a plane and in the water it's going to Glide so it probably moved quite a distance from where it went in the water to where it impacted the seafloor unless it managed to nose itself straight down to the ocean floor but I doubt that it probably glided a couple of miles away.
