Devastating. Even though there (currently) isn't any homebrew solution to expand functionality, I decided that the sale price wouldn't hurt me to buy and sit on it to see if these things eventually get cracked by indy developers. I was at the checkout page a few weeks ago and ready to buy two when I hesitated because it only works with Premium accounts. I got mad at the thought of their original MSRP and STILL requiring a subscription to function. So I closed the window in some kind of childish defiance, hahaha. Today I checked your channel to see if there was anything new, saw this video and was reminded of the thing, clicked to go to the store link and BOOM, I see this comment. Sold out? Uuuuuuggghhhhh, I guess I deserve this. Now to deal with scalpers wanting $80-$100 for the things if I ever decide to want one 😑

I got mine just before they sold out. Didn't think about using it as a desktop music controller until seeing your vid. For me, I found its greatest benefit to easily switch between my gaming music playlists using the presets instead of having to use Spotify on xbox

For those who are just finding this video it's worth mentioning that Spotify announced today that the Car Thing's software support will be discontinued as of December 2024. This will render the devices unusable. From Spotify: "After December 9th, 2024, Car Thing will be discontinued and will no longer be operational."

As a small update, their lawyers may have gotten a bit scared. Those who already own a Car Thing can try to contact customer support for a refund, so long as they have their purchase receipt and jump through whatever hoops get put in place.

It makes no sense as a desk accessory when the Spotify client is in your face and controlled with a few clicks of your mouse. Why completely stop what you're doing, reach over to some unnecessary screen to change volume or songs. Looks fancy but so counter productive. That said it seems useful in any setting away from your desk, like a car or bedroom. Too bad it's locked to Spotify, requires premium subscription, and Bluetooth.

​@@cloudvsSephirof Why completely stop what your doing and minimize the application you're doing work in to open spotify on your computer screen? If anything, that's more counter productive than this thing is, as it takes you away from whatever you're primarily using your computer for.

@@kojiurJust alt+tab and back again? Alternatively CRTL+arrow keys to navigate tracks. Makes much more sense then going out of your way to hook up an additional piece of hardware that does what your computer already can and taking your hand off your mouse or keyboard to control it. You could also just get a keyboard with media keys...better alternative than e waste sitting on your desk. It's purely for aesthetics which is fine but don't try telling me this is more intuitive than a hotkey or click of a mouse. It's a fine product but completely redundant sitting on your desk. Could make sense in a car or something eh

​@Carlos Flores I'm supposed to alt+tab while gaming? I don't use Spotify on my pc for that reason. If I had the car thing I wouldn't be using my phone.

This is some insane production quality not only for a first video but in general. You're color grading, transitions, setting and shot composition are almost perfect.

I’m so glad I came across this video. I got the car thing as an “early access” at full price. It was neat at first but it quickly lost its luster inside my car. Having the car thing as a mini player for my desktop is an incredible use for this odd device I thought became a paperweight for me

Thanks for the heads up! I have one in my car that I paid the full $90 for and I love it, so $30 for an extra one at my desk is a no-brainer.

Im so hopeful that Spotify will see the potential and roll out an update to make it more compatible with pc. Im having an issue where i have to turn the dial considerable amount to change the volume even a little and the voice commands really aren't working very often.

I just hope they open it up and make it open source. I could see so many cool software tricks that would work so well for this hardware. This thing sucks in so many ways (can run laggy sometimes, mic is super weak, voice recognition sucks badly, etc) but the hardware is mostly great.

It was recently jailbroken. It's possible the modding community might be working on some projects with it.

They really dropped the ball on this one. It could have just been a spotify thing. I'd put one on my desktop, in my dining room and if IP68 rated in my shower.

i was always intrigued by the car thing. I have no use for it bc my car is carplay capable, but I still want one. Now I’m thinking of using it next to my turntable set-up for aestetics lol. Great vid!

I bought the car thing when it first came out but it felt like a screen overload on my car dash with my phone mounted, my double din touchscreen stereo and the car thing all mounted on the dash. so I took it out of my car and put it back in the box and it's been sitting doing nothing for a loooooong time but now it's sitting nice and cool on my desk

I've been debating grabbing one of these, so I clicked on this. The concept of this channel is dope, just what I've been looking for.

Since its release, I tried using it as a desktop Spotify controller and I even paid the full $89 dollars. The issues I have with it could easily be fixed with software but they don't do anything to fix it. The main one is that anytime I leave my desk and take out my phone, it constantly keeps opening Spotify. They could easily just add a setting toggle "Open Spotify when connected to Car Thing". The other more annoying issue is that if I say start playing something on my Mac and then play something on the app using Spotify link, it will override and play on my phone instead. Both of these could easily be fixed with software but Spotify hasn't done anything about it since release and in my opinion, are really holding the device back.

It's such a shame this deal is only available in the US, and I'm not even sure it's available in the UK at all? You perfectly describe my own use case. Always use Spotify at home but if I'm working then picking up my phone to change music will inevitably lead to me getting distracted. Using the Google hub isn't quite as streamlined. I had thought to make something like this myself using a Raspberry Pi, so maybe I should still give this a go.

I ordered one to Germany via a freight forwarder. The price roughly doubles but at ~60$ it still seems reasonable. Also I want to look not possible other uses of the hardware. Some people are working on rooting it.

I got one a few weeks ago and I can say, I now use it more than my iPods when I’m at home. As for using it with a phone, I just used my old phone connected to it and then I just change it using that phone or in the computer app. It was hard to connect in the beginning bc of the AC adapter. But after that, I haven’t had issues. Overall I would recommend it.

just got one after its discontinue at a pawn shop brand new for 10 dollars, a steal for sure. going straight to my desk setup

Ended up buying one after watching this video and it arrived today. Small bit of hassle after setting it up to get the all of the onscreen controls working. Had to restart the device about four times but now I have full functionality on the device and it is playing through my computer speakers. Used the car vent mount and some Gekko Tape to mount it at the bottom of one of my monitors. Looks very clean and is easily within reach. I also agree that being able to see the album art is an enhancement.

Welp, I just ordered one of these things.... Never thought I would because it was designed to solve a problem I don't have. Enter the possibility of using it.....Outside The Car (*Gasp*) and I immediately rationalized the cost of getting one! Thanks for the out of the box idea!
