​@belzebub16 feel like that was explained in the video lol. At least the way it sounded to me it's supposed to be a more quicker way to access the app while driving. Instead of having to unlock your phone ( pick it up if you don't have it mounted which also adds more time to take your eyes away from the road), scroll through the app to find what you want to listen then click. You have a quick remote button. Some Bluetooth transmitters come with remotes to control your music. This was just Spotify doing it worse lol. Or like stated in the video I could also see it being useful for someone cooking or something. Your hands might be a bit greasy or something. You could use a finger on a touchscreen or voice control to skip or something. My car has Android Auto and I can definitely say it is alot quicker and safer to use a big screen you can focus on with your peripheral vision or a quick glance then it is to pick up the phone and try to quickly glance between up and down lol. That said it did sound too expensive for just using Spotify lol.

It's pretty pointless if you have to connect your phone to your car's AUX anyway. I was hoping this would be a good solution for older non-Bluetooth cars.

@@alexismiconi2481 get an fm transmitter that's what I have, found one of these on the floor outside my house so I'm gonna use it for my pc set up so I don't have to be changing tabs whenever I wanna change the song/podcast

For $29 on sale, it was a no brainer for me so I can keep my phone on the mount using only maps and other apps without having to tab out or scroll down to Spotify.

This is my main function of it as well. Always a pain(and more dangerous) having to switch between navigation and finding a mew song. For $30, I bit. For $80, can’t say it’s worth it.

If im not on a trip i dont even pull my phone out since i have apple watch. And i just use the car-thing for music. When im on trips i agree i also dont like switching so for 30 bucks its worth it. Very specific use cases i would say though for sure not for everyone

Intelidash is what I use. It’s a small tablet with CarPlay and android auto. It was a must have for me in my older car.

You can there’s Sony head units and other brands but they’re like 500-1k USD.

Interestingly enough, "Hey, Spotify", as part of the basic Spotify app (whether with the FREE version that has commercials, or the premium version), has been disabled! Yup. Once adverts for 'Car Thing' began showing-up on my Spotify app (that I have had for years), "Hey, Spotify" ceased to work. I tried everything: clearing cache, force stopping the app, uninstalling the app, making sure my phone had the latest updates, rebooting the phone, and reinstalling Spotify, connecting to Blue Tooth, etc., but NOTHING worked. Reached out to Spotify support, only to have them tell me "Hey, Spotify" is being disabled / removed from the Spotify app, and to have such functionality, I needed to have 'Car Thing', or possibly use something like Android Auto to control Spotify (I'm trying Android Auto now... What fun... NOT! Oh, I can control Spotify, too bad no sound comes out of my car speakers!). I told Spotify support what a poor business decision they had made. Who wants yet another piece of hardware, at their now discounted price of $49.99, when it truly provides no real value? Spotify was perfect as was, for my needs. Removing "Hey, Spotify" was a douche move on Spotify's part. I'm going to get Android Auto working with Spotify, one way of another!

I like it , I drive Uber and I allow the passengers to use it instead of giving them my phone which I'm already navigating Uber with

did that when I drove Lyft... had a 7.5" tablet I mounted to my dash on a magnet... would pass back to pax and let them pick the tunes!

man, i do love spotify and all but why not just get a phone mount? If you have the spotify app then you basically don't need the car thing

Truly the only reason I want it is because I get nervous switching between my maps and the spotify app, especially on long car trips. I wanted to install a receiver for car play with Apple but it’s way more expensive + labor for Installation

The worst part about this for me is the fact that Spotify removed functionality from the to try and force these on people. They removed the ability to see song name and artist on aftermarket head units that don't use Android auto. I'm surprised they still let me skip tracks with the head unit.

I just ordered mine since it on sale at $29 dollars. I found this very useful since my 2015 truck's head unit doesn't come with Android Auto and I don't like to unlock my phone every time I want to switch songs or album's and I also don't want my phone screen to be on all the time.

Update: you get better user interface in the phone's App. The car thing options, recommendations etc are very limited and I find myself having to get in to my phone to find something different to listen to. At $30 on sale it's a good price, at full price $80 it is NOT WORTH IT

Thank you for this. I got the half off e-mail and nearly pulled the trigger. I had hoped this was gonna be some mind blowing gadget *sigh*. But very cool gizmo for older cars lacking in the fancy audio dashboard department.

I think this is a great device for older console cars. But a great point to be had is that that the same can be achieved with a really good phone mount.

I figured this would be helpful for people like myself who deliver, and gps being used on my phone. As it would make it easier to switch songs and such without hindering my GPS

My car doesn't have Bluetooth for music. But I do have an AUX jack on the dash. But most phone builders have killed off the headphone jack. So, I can't connect my phone to the AUX in my car. I was really hoping the Car Thing would be that bridge by having an AUX jack. Thus, solving a problem for those of us that drive older vehicles. It would be worth every bit of $90 if it had an AUX jack. Without it, I am not seeing the point.

For your situation you can use a Bluetooth adapter that plugs in your aux. I got a Monster Audio one at Walmart for under $20. You could just use that to listen to music in your car or still get the car thing as it will work if your phone is connected to the Bluetooth adapter.

The Bluetooth -> to FM transmitter are worlds better than the USB to aux adapters. Louder and last way longer, without the annoying feedback.

Seems like this would be great for Uber drivers who want to offer music control to backseat riders. Don't see why even at current $50 price it would replace a phone+mount

you can get fm bluetooth transmiter , then connect phone to fm transmiter and find fm frequency from fm trasmitter on car radio, it cost maybe 5-7 bucks.

Better off just getting a phone mount...with this you'll pay for the hardware, then Spotify will just brick it/stop supporting it so you'll be left with a piece of junk.

Favorite would def be the Wyze vacuum. Been using there cameras, bulbs, and plugs for a while now. Didn't know they made other stuff like vacuums.

A smart phone can’t do this better?

For having a 2002 Jeep Wrangler this is worth it using the same device you still use for everything else but this is the one thing I’ve been looking forward too. I’m excited for this to arrive “being a hard core fan letting Spotify role my life” I concur, This is something old car owners need!

Just got one for $30 Spotify has already cancelled manufacturing of Car Thing and is clearing out inventory apparently... 😆😅

These are perfect for the UK so it's a shame they don't sell them over here (though I ordered a couple to US friends who forwarded them to me) as it's illegal to even touch your phone when driving now

picked up 2 when they dropped down to 50 bucks, love the one in my truck, use the other one as remote in varies applications around the home. i like mine, only worth to me at 50 and even then that price felt like what they should have started at instead of being the discount price

It seems like it’s just an additional screen when you could just continue to use Spotify from your phone. Strange. I was intrigued when I first saw stuff about this a while ago but now it doesn’t seem too useful.

Does it connect directly to your car stereo via Bluetooth or aux? I have an Alpine CDA-7995 stereo it’s a basic CD player with auxiliary input. How can I connect it to my old alpine deck?

Great if you got an oled screen on your phone and don't like leaving the screen on a static screen for an extended period of time. Before anyone says screen burn-ins don't happen, it's happened to me like 3 times already leaving from having Google maps on.

I was looking for the exact same reason, my WRX's screen is very buggy and doesn't work well with apple devices plus with the CD mount it will basically cover the oem screen and show songs 🤷‍♂

If I subscribed to spotify I'd definitely get this, I use my phone for navigation so its annoying and dangerous to also try to use it for music at the same time. Unfortunately my cars system only has a dedicated app for pandora that kinda works the same as this using the phone for the actual connection.

this was very informative, i was planning to buy this as i saw it when it first came out, but after hearing your points and the cons of it i think it might be something i hold off on, great vid.

My friend has an echo that he can play Spotify music but I’m not a huge fan of those devices so this’d be a great remote tool replacement

20 years from now we'll laugh at it. Audio manufacturers need to update their machines with mobile apps this will go away fast.

Question..it's on Sale for $49.00(as per today 7/2/22)...any thoughts or just work with the Spotify display on the iPhone? When in the car I use WAZE and it too is integrated. So may damn choices...sometimes I just want my Cousin Brucie on WABC or Scot Muni on WNEW-FM back in the 70's. Thanks for the review.

I bought it so I can have my phone on Waze (MagSafe dash mount) and have Spotify on the other since I change my music a lot. Will help me keep my eyes on the road rather than swiping through apps to change my music. I have a feeling it'll be useful for long rides, but if it's a smaller commute not as much

You know what’s crazy is Spotify has partnered with google maps in the past idk why they haven’t added google maps support to this thing! I know it’s discontinued at this point, but I’m just saying and Besides they should update the existing units even though they wont

My car, a 2011 Honda Accord, doesn’t display the songs either via aux or even radio. I think the Spotify Car Thing will be great for me because I just want a screen (not my phone) that displays my music!

I have a question that would be a deal breaker for me. Do I need to connect my phone via Bluetooth? Or can I connect it to my car and my car only without having to use my phone. As in can I be on a call while listening to music on the remote

Purchased this because in a case my samsung really had a hard time reading dinger prints and I hate having to unlock my screen with a pin everytime I want to change music. (The Spotify app is flaky as heck with the "hey spotify" feature.)

It has a 2.5 out of 5 rating on PCMAG, definitely not worth the money. Spotify needs to focus on adding an option to the APP itself to swap from the regular UI to a UI dedicated to ease of usage when driving. Instead, under "car" in settings, they simply add a silly warning about paying attention. Spotify also needs to resolve the issue of the incredibly small buttons on the left during playback when in landscape mode. It's incredibly annoying having to tap multiple times just to skip a song. If I do ever happen to cause an accident due to my inability to easily skip a track because of their lack of foresight in design and their unwillingness to improve in a timely fashion, they will be hearing from my attorneys - I've written to them numerous times now insisting that they improve the UI since the way they have it set up poses a significant danger to road safety.

Been contemplating this for use on my motorcycle but it seems as though it would be an added distraction and largely unnecessary

I feel like this is like the cassette tape aux cord but now it’s a cd mounted Bluetooth device.

Its good when u dont want to connect ur phone to ur audio stereo cuz u dont want some calls or texts to pop out when in ur phone or car screen (if u know what i mean) so u just get the spottify car thing and keep ur phone in ur pocket🙊

My iPhone has a lot of problems using USB-audio, and Bluetooth isn't working that great on my iPhone. So maybe this should be a solution to this problems...

I'll wait for a second upgraded version.

Dang. You can see the lag when navigating menus. That makes it dangerous to use while driving. Those extra moments looking away from the road make a difference. Seems better just to use your ur phone.
