Half-Life: Day One was intended for and released to the public as it was a pack-in disc included as OEM software with particular partnered brands of video cards, sound cards, controllers, and the like. This is why the Day One disc you show at 2:29 has the ATI logo on it. As for Half-Life: Initial Encounter's release date, the "Winter 1999" date from the OverWiki shown at 16:51 is the correct one. The "December 30, 1998" that the old Wikia/Fandom page cites is patently false as Initial Encounter includes Team Fortress Classic which was of course not released until April 7, 1999.

Ahhh... okay thanks for the information about the Day One disc. I didn't know that. For Initial Encounter, I kind of thought it was 1999. I mainly thought that it may not have been 1998 because of the grey background and it seeming too early after the release of HL1. But considering TFC was released in 1999, that makes A LOT and MORE sense when you put it together. Thank you so much Marphy! This means too much to me

That is true. But they still didn't really approve the film when it was being created. Also, I found another correction: on 26:20 I said March 15 was the release date, but on screen I accidentally put "March 5, 1999."

16:03 I think this can happen in retail just super hard to pull off because it requires you to open the door at the right moment. 49:30 the mods on the PS2 I think that was a result of the failed PS2 network and PS2 hard drive launch that failed. like how Nintendo NES and N64 had expansion ports under the console that was never used. the N64 had a hard drive/cd player under it to add extra feture but it was only used for 4 games in the end and only in japan. the HL2 demo I think might be so convoluted because and this was in use in a few games (Gotic3 i think) one bit of code was changed to flag the game as a demo or retail and all the data that was missing. meaning if you somehow mange to flag the demo version of Gothic 3 as retail and then tried to leave the demo area it would let you (no invinsible wall) and then the game would promptly crash because it can´t load the data for the next bit of the game. ... nevermind HL2 demo have id 219 release date 1 December 2004. retail HL 2 have id 220 and release date 16 November 2004.... odd that the demo have a lower id but was released later.

Yeah those are some good theories for HL2 demo and the PS2 mods. For 16:03, I haven't seen it ever happen again when playing HL1. Only happened in Day One for me, but maybe you can I wouldn't be surprised.

The algorithm only just showed this! So much work was put into putting this together and I enjoyed it immensely.

Thank you! I think my other content after this video is much better and I would recommend them more, but this means a lot to me.

There were a lot more unique demo scenarios for games at the time. I know Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast had a unique mission taking place in a single level. The demo for Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun consisted of 2 GDI missions separate from the full game's campaign and had tutorial prompts which I find interesting as that would predate Red Alert 2's proper boot camp campaign. Speaking of demos, I found the multiplayer demos for games at the time to be interesting as well, usually consisting of one or a scant few maps and the ability to play on full-game servers if they ran the same maps such as Tribes 2 and Vengeance, Battlefield 2 (Gulf of Oman in 16p and 32p sizes) and 2142 (Sidi Power Plant in Conquest and Titan modes), Command & Conquer: Renegade (with cnc_under). Tribes 2 is the most interesting, there were only assets for the desert and grassland maps, Blood Eagle and Star Wolf teams and the default Hero voice but you could connect to servers hosting any map because the Torque engine's way of loading maps let you easily do that. You could even get access to the mobile base and transport vehicles that are normally unavailable in the demo "Slapdash" map.

Interesting. A lot of Command & Conquer, I used to love strategy games (still do). One you could add to this list of demos adding a mission is from Gunman Chronicles. That demo had some new levels in it. But thank you for your input!

Warcraft3 Thralls campaign after the tutorial bit (the tutorial campaign end whit you steeling some boats and sailing of towards calimdore) in retail it end after the steeling boats mission. on the demo you spend a few mission on some random island shipwrecked or something (recruiting some trolls). yes on some later printed Retail disk that campaign was re added under the extra campaign portion.

I first experienced Half Life 1 through the Day 1 Build back in 2020. That was only 4 years ago, but man, it feels like it's been a long time ago, so much nostalgia and memories! (I know that sounds silly, but Half Life was so fresh, it sort of gave back the imaginative first experiences i would have with video game, back when i knew absolutely nothing!) So glad to see that menu back in the 25th anniversary update!

That’s interesting. Haven’t played any of the demos. I seriously need to play Uplink. I love how dark it is (reminds me of the Half Life 2 beta. Which would have been a much better sequel in terms of tone, Xen organisms have become part of earth’s ecosystems, actually having enemy variety, and it actually feels like the Combine took over instead of just being there). That is interesting how the zombies grew smarter throughout the demo (imagine if when you went to Ravenholm the traps were built to ensnare you, and the zombies were trying to flank you. Makes me think of that They Hunger mod I’ve never played). I like how it shows just how devastating the conflict was for all sides. There’s this mod called Signal Lost that expands on Uplink by reimagining cut content to stretch things out. It looks cool. If they were to ever make a Half Life movie the only voice acceptable for Gordon would be Ross Scott. Imagine just how amazing it would be if Valve made Freeman’s Mind canon. I’d probably watch a film version of that. Why is Randy so hated? Admittedly I’m out of the loop. Was there some sort of discrimination/harassment behind the scenes? Gearbox deserves all the flak they got for Colonial Marines (at least we got Borderlands out of that dumpster fire. Borderlands is a really good game). As well as Duke Nukem Forever, but that was mostly just George (no idea how to spell his last name) being an idiot who kept changing engines and adding stuff that doesn’t work with Duke Nukem. All Gearbox did was publish it (they seriously should have had quality control look it over first). I’m personally not a fan of the whole Portal/Half Life shared universe thing. The reason is because the two have radically different tones, and it raises questions of how the Combine never found Aperture. 54:37 makes me think of that funny video where Guptill89’s video ranting about how Ray William Johnson made a dumb song called doing your mom (this is coming from the same guy who made that cringy Top 10 Hottest Sonic Characters video. I LOVE that stupid video SO MUCH!😂). Good video.

Yeah definitionly play Uplink, it is a short but wild ride. They Hunger was actually my second mod I ever played. The zombies in that mod are way more smart than in here since some of them carry around guns... Yeah picture that. As for Signal Lost, I did play it and LOVED IT! It was so much fun. Ross Scott would be awesome for a movie. Speaking of Ross Scott, a little fun fact about this video is that I actually emailed him before releasing the video.I wanted to get his permission to use this Freeman's Mind reference in 22:34 and he said that it was okay to use. He had child pornagraphy on a USB flash drive that he left at a Medieval Times, he kept a lot of the money Borderlands 3 made for himself and told his employees if they didn't like that they didn't get paid then leave (in 2020 when a pandemic was happening), and every game Gearbox touchs turns to shit. Randy Pitchford is a pretty shitty guy and has lied a lot of times. He is just a joke in the gaming industry. Funny you mention the Portal and Half-life shared universe... all I will say is stay tuned 👀 Lol yeah. Fun fact about Tigers Fistting your Mom is that it was going to be my name. I will be sure to check it out sometime. Addmitely I haven’t played They Hunger. I just wanted a bunch of videos on it. It’s an interesting take on zombies because they still have their minds, they’re just controlled by an animalistic desire to consume. I should probably try it just to experience one of the oldest Half Life mods. It’s insane how that came out the same year Half Life was released. I’ll definitely have to check out Signal Lost. It will be really interesting to see how the mod author reimagines the other cut chapters/content. It’s interesting how when you look at the cut content for Half Life 1 you can see a noticeable leap in graphics and animations. Freeman’s Mind was hilarious. I like how it shows him slowly become completely insane, and how he mentioned that Alyx is most likely emotionally stunted due to trauma (that would actually explain a lot). I really hope that the Half Life/Portal movies stay in development hell. Knowing what JJ Abrams did with Star Wars and Star Trek this can only end up terrible. If only the Halo show never got released. It’s amazing just how terrible it is. I’m so happy that I never got Paramount Plus. They seriously should have just made a mini series that juggles the events of CE, The Flood book (no Eliza toon of CE that has a few really good side stories. The parts adapting CE weren’t very good, but the side stories were truly phenomenal), and Fireteam Raven (yes, that arcade game nobody played. Halo Canon and Xperia have some videos talking about the backstory for the different characters). In terms of tone it would be a gritty war story with over the top action for Chief. This would keep things grounded, while showing that Spartans are super soldiers capable of stuff that no normal humans can do. Plus, this would allow them to show off the different perspectives of the characters involved. Unfortunately the people working on the show wanted to do their own terrible thing. I really hope it doesn’t get a second season. Wow. I knew the guy was scummy. But, I wasn’t aware that he’s a freak (sounds like he’d get along very well with the likes of Vaush and WingsofRedemption). I think I heard that he’s gone. Hopefully Gearbox will be able to make something good. For a while I was thinking that Microsoft’s original plan to have Gearbox take over Halo would have been better than 343 because Boarderlands and the Half Life expansions were really good. Now I realize that would have been terrible. Still, it would be really interesting to see what that would be like. That will definitely be interesting to see. Fairly recently I saw this thing saying that the original ending from Portal was supposed to leave you in Xen implying that Aperture was either in Xen, or that the explosion sent you to Xen. Either way that’s interesting. It also said that Portal 2 retconned some of the stuff from the first game because originally Glados was just an ai, and it was implied that Chell could have been a clone. I really think they should have just kept it as it’s own thing. That would have been so funny if you went with that name. Again, there’s no need to apologize for being late to respond to comments because I’m guilty of that exact thing myself.

Does anyone have any idea how to get the security door to open at the beginning of We've Got Hostiles? I've tried the old scientist E spamming technique and it doesn't work because the scientist completely ignores the player (and is apparently invincible) Also, what console commands that actually works in Day One? I've done the instructions on how to bind console commands to keys in the pak0.pak file that was seen on the Combine Overwiki. But apparently, commands such as "sv_cheats" and "noclip" do not work at all in this build

Fun fact half life on PS2 has keyboard and mouse support. No idea if the demo has the same capabilities but you certainly could have saved some anguish on Uplink. Oh well too late now.

Yeah I know. But I was just too lazy to do it. The Dreamcast port also had that feature, but it was only for a Sega issued Keyboard and Mouse for the Dreamcast. The Uplink Demo most likely works with it

I don't really think that would be an interesting topic for a video since there isn't much to discuss (at least in my opinion). Currently, I am doing other video ideas at the moment. But speaking of Halo, I did make a Halo CE review on the channel not too long ago if you haven't seen it.

half life: uplink was made as a demo to show off what you would get when you would buy the full version of half life, and i think it's also really cool it takes place completly at night. you never saw that in the original half life. also: i think uplink IS canon. halfway through the game in apprehension gordon gets knocked out, so maybe in the time he's knocked out he dreams about getting to the lambda complex, this also makes sense beacuse you see enemies that you have only encountered so far; no alien grunts, no alien controllers, no snarks. you also receive weapons that you have only got so far. when the screen fades to black gordon wakes up. you should also mention the fact uplink got added to base half life in the 25TH anniversary update!!!

Maybe because it was an old build the game or something. Maybe newer hardware if it was? Not sure about that one. I do remember having some trouble trying to install it and getting luck.

@@ElephantsDoingCrack for some reason it didnt work on my old pc and then for some reason it works on the new low quality laptop im using...... which ran out of space in 2 days

Fun fact: You can play as a Vortigaunt in Uplink on the ps2. Cheat codes are shared between Half Life ps2 and Uplink ps2, so ypu just need to activate Alien mode & then start a playthrough of Uplink.

@@ElephantsDoingCrack Nice. Also, somebody ported Blue Shift to the PS2. You just need to download it off of ModDB, burn the files onto a disc, open Half-Life PS2 extras menu, and put in the disc. And guess what the modder also added, alien mode.

I got this bundled with , if not mistaken , either my gpu Asus Riva TNT 2 Ultra or the Creative Sound Blaster Live.....i was only 12/13 at that time....men i suck at this game...too advance....I just stuck very early in the game lol

Oh like at the early parts of Half-life? Oh I can't imagine. I still, somewhat, remember my first time playing Half-life 2's demo and how it fucking scared me. I had played Half-life 1 and didn't expect it.

@@ElephantsDoingCrack i didn't know what's the hype for half life game all about at that time....but now i know, because the level design, which i think one of the early games that doesn't hand holding you in terms of the objectives, there's no indicator or maps for reference, which very common attributes for fps games even to this day...cheers!

Cant you enable the developer console just by adding it to the shortcut settings?

If you are talking about Day One... then no. This was 2 years ago, I remember reading something about the developer console and it seemed like a lot of work. Plus HL WON is a bitch for me nowadays

I assumed half life day one would have it because quake has it the exact same way, if you make a shortcut of half life, and then in the shortcut directory settings if you add -console at the end it will enable it in game

The reason why half life day one has glitches is because half life day one's opengl is really broken. Try software mode and it will fix it.

I did try Software mode and it would send me back to the desktop while the game was still happening in the background. That is why I used OpenGL because I could actually play and see the game. I am sure Software Mode is an improvement, but I just couldn't play it.

tiny mistake youve made during the day one part, the power up title in day one is actually "footfall" not "football" (as funny as it sounds)

@@ElephantsDoingCrack true, video was pretty enjoyable (also the way for playing uplink in PS2 half life sounds simliar to one of those rumors from back in the day where youd get luigi in super mario 64 by doing random stuff)

the reason why half-life day one is so buggy is because the opengl renderer does not work properly on modern hardware. if you were able to use software mode rendering it would've worked properly also, the 2 half-life alyx environments are free in the steamvr home

I have gotten this comment a lot already and the video is almost two years old with some details blurry. Software mode refused to work for me and Opengl was the only one that would let me see the game.

the vent near the smg is support to be a headcrab jump out of it but its was scrapped but the vent still there in day one and the end_demo trigger box can be skipped by jump in the vent a.k.a playing the danger ways but the vent ia blocked so the only way to go thru' it is noclip but you still doesnt have blast pit bc its doesnt exist in day one yet and day one and uplink is playable on browser so you are waste your time by waiting and gordon look like half ghost bc theres still doesnt having his player model so his model was re use from gina model so he hand some time look like gina hologram hand and this coment has been run through 6 edit ☠️💀☠️💀☠️💀

i downloaded torrent hl2 update and it work now too but i cant download all maps without d1 trainstaincion 1 and 2 without mmod. in mmod all work well. Then i redirected to hl2 in store. now i have hl2 in steam and i can share torrent but its update and its russian langlage.

No that is actually an issue with my copy of Portal 1. It's a common problem some people have and one Valve didn't fix. I recently found out the solution by switching from Directx 8 to Directx 9 in the settings. So that is a my bad. Whoops
