I am white and didn't know the history of blackface. I knew it was wrong, but didn't know the specifications of why. After watching this segment I was EDUCATED, as were a lot of other people, on what the history of blackface means/is. We are a forgiving, thoughtful, and ever learning country. We've got to come together to move forward. We also need to take into part our EDUCATION SYSTEM. There's clearly improvements that need to be made, which is why we need more FUNDING FOR EDUCATION

i went to a predominantly white high school in Boise, ID class of 1997 with the foreign exchange students being the ones responsible for adding diversity to our school. We were taught in American History about blackface. It is being taught, but the real question is are people actually really paying attention and learning about our important American History.

Tangela Harden I still don’t get Roland’s say. I still don’t see the connection between dressing up as a black person you admire and blacks being oppressed historically. What is the POINT of Halloween then? Kelly just CAVED and that is a disappointment. I’m not white but a Filipino American.

Stefan Unson Because there is a long history of dehumanising black people with blackface.... Context matters. If you truly admire that black person then why not listen to the black community opinion. After so many years of being on the racist end of the stick, can you blame them if they want all blackface to stop, no matter your intention?

  • @unknownunknowns

Benjamin Leow So sure blackface was considered racist in the past but it should not be always the case today! The whole point of dressing up is so people can tell the DIFFERENCE without asking. That mindset in the black community should change or you might as well do away with this tradition because all it does anyway is give people like Roland diabetes!

When you say past, Jim Crow laws and blackface was literally 50 years ago. That is not that long ago. And I must say, it is really not your place as an asian american to tell black people to get over racism. Racism is still ongoing in the US, and only an ignorant or wilfully blind person can claim otherwise. (re : black people getting police called on them doing normal things, getting shot, etc)

Most men find Black women least attractive when compared with White, Asian, Hispanic ... etc. Tommy Sotomeyour talks extensively on the subject with particular attention to the # of wigs used by black women. One only needs to look at pornographic websites to see what the demand for Black women is versus white women.

As a kid growing up it shocked me that people didn't know these things. Not just from reading books but I just took it for granted from living in a very diverse metropolitan area. Still shocked with internet access, media, and more bookstores on the landscape that people STILL don't know about these things! Well, it's a long time coming, but definitely time for some education.

Keona Welch First, don’t be rude. Second, I’m more concerned with media discussing the fact that 2 out of every 3 indigenous women experience sexual violence, and the fact that the government doesn’t actual track the statistics on how many of our women are missing and murdered. Any published statistics are generally from AI/AN organizations. I know about appropriation of culture and the harmful affects it has on marginalized communities. I’m talking about something more than just hurt feelings.

While the sombrero and pancho are traditional pieces in our culture, the alcohol in the hand is not. People think it's funny and fun to dress like this, but if you visit Mexico you will most likely never see anyone dressed this way. I feel it's just a lack of education and never being taught respect.

I’m a Hispanic; I’ve been living here for some time now first thing I learned was to respect and educate myself about the cultures in this beautiful national that has so many; I learned about Martin Luther king my first year being here even before I spoke English, he inspired me and still does I also learn and I’m still learning about African American culture and their struggle ( sadly many won’t agree with me but I think still going on) and how not only they were treated but also how many white individuals thought less of them; and to me learning that and finding it so disturbing, disgusting and sometimes hard to learn makes me so mad that so many people don’t want to even put this on books for our generations to see and know this is unexplainable; human beings tend to look the other way if is not affecting them and that’s not right in order to start healing all the atrocities of some of these ancestors they have to accept that is was not ok and even though I know they are not personally the ones that did it ask for forgiveness; because is so easy to say “just move on”, or not even speak about it but the stuff the African American community went through is something we need to acknowledge so future generations won’t repeat it and maybe that’s why they still being treated the way they are because some people don’t want to acknowledge it is still a problem

It was not until 1967 that the ACLU (omg I LOVE them) was able to help the Lovings repeal the law stating that interracial marriage was unconstitutional. Did you know that it took another 33 years for Alabama. THIRTY-THREE YEARS! I think that is absolutely abhorrent.

NBC is so out of touch with black people that they bring on Amy holmes and Rollie to represent. That tells you allot about that organization. They don't even know how much damage they did to whatever little credibility they had. Spent the last year whitewashing the network and the only time they bring on black folks is to clean up a PR gaffe. Who's next, Stephen A. Smith and Whitlock?!

So she, the lady in the white top, said “Megan you can’t dress up as Diana Ross, but I can..the the gentleman said no she can wear the dress, hold a fan and “do the hair”...wouldn’t the hair be a feature of a colored person just as say them making their lips big, meaning being stereotypical as they are saying NOT to be. So in the same sense little colored girls shouldn’t dress up as Elsa and have the long blonde hair? I’m so confused as there is so MANY contradictions going on that to be honest makes a white person afraid/scared to speak to or about a colored person in fear of saying the wrong thing; isn’t that what we as a nation are trying to prove, that we shouldn’t live in fear of judgment based on our color of skin?

I would like for people to go see what black people in the Netherlands are fighting against for years... Black face in the Netherlands is a very normal thing just because they say it's a tradition... Whenever you have the time please go search zwarte piet!

Good luck trying to change the Netherlands they have always been that way and will prolly stay that way. You can’t really move into another part of the world and expect to change decades of culture just cause your offended. It will take everyone coming together and teaching younger generations the importance of not being racist and accept each other to truly change anything.

marylous arends I would venture to say the black people in the Netherlands have migrated there from Africa, and are not African Americans. Therefore I don’t understand why they would be offended by black face since they were never slaves? Can you please elaborate?
