@@BenHerbivore Wow -- so much ignorance in so few words -- well done! The US was built on slavery -- black people were objects, not people. When slavery was finally abolished, white people didn't magically start treating black people as equals. At no time have black people had equal financial opportunity in this nation even tho their ancestors provided the labor that built its wealth -- that's crazy. The legacy of slavery is a two-tiered society in which a disproportionate percentage of black people live in poverty; have shitty schools; have fewer professional and economic opportunities; and suffer more disease (because polluting industries are built where poor people live) and have a lower life expectancy. The fact that ANYONE in the year 2018 doesn't grasp this but instead accuses black people of playing the "victim" card says everything that anyone needs to know about systemic racism in the US. If you really think that racism is a thing of the past, that the US offers black and white people a level playing field, then please come look at this bridge I have for sale ...

Blackface has always been considered offensive _by black people._ Megyn is referring to the fact that white people have been insulated from the consequences of their racist actions - a white child wearing blackface on Halloween would not have been accused of racism in the 70s because the only people with a voice to do so were other white people who had no problem with oppressing & objectifying minorities.

One more time, for the people in the back: “Blackface is racist because it turns black people into a costume and divorces them from their humanity. We’re not costumes; we’re people. But more importantly it ignores the severely racist context in which blackface was introduced to this country and actions don’t exist separate from their context.” There’s your answer. That’s why it’s racist. The context part is of special significance. It’s racist because of the history behind it. That legacy will always be embedded in the practice; it will always have racist connotations. People may want to try and reclaim blackface, to make it not racist, but reclaiming and redefining symbols is... hard. While you’re at it try and redefine the embedded symbolism of white hooded robes in America. Have fun with that. And dressing up in a Native American feather headdress, unless you’re Native American, is cultural appropriation, which is another no no. Bill Maher and his ilk can howl about PC culture all they want; just don’t do it. There are literally thousands of things you can dress up as for Halloween; not dressing up as a person of another skin color won’t kill you. And to be clear, you CAN dress in blackface. No one will tackle you and force you to change your costume. The government won’t throw you in jail (hell, under this administration you might get congratulated for sticking it to the libs). This isn’t your 1st Amendment rights being taken away on Halloween. You just can’t do it and expect everyone to not say something about it. Actions have consequences, even if they’re only getting dragged on social media.

It's beautiful because they also can't punish you for speaking out against corruption or other issues in the government! Allowing people to sort of police themselves into creating a society of caring individuals means the whole country can continue to grow for the better! If the government is forcing people to act a certain way it can never be engrained as a true ideal of the people.

I think that had more to do with appointment viewing on Netflix. Which is the opposite of what Netflix is about. You watch the first episode and then have to wait a week for the next, but a week later you're off binging some other show and forget about that show from a week ago. You also can't go back after the series is done because it's topical to what happened that week it "aired"...so it has aged horribly. Almost all the shows on Netflix that used appointment viewing schedule have been canned.

@@ajakennedy6072 I think things are getting worse now as opposed to 5+ years ago, because it seems like more people want to benefit from their "oppression". Things have gotten better, and probably things are as good as they will ever be. Unfortunately millennial think the opposite only because they haven't lived during the time of real segregation. and I've lived long enough to watch MILLIONS of white people fight and risk their lives to end slavery. It wasn't that they were volunteers either, but they were drafted and fought for the oppressed to abolish segregation and slavery. Millions of lives were lost, and in the end we accomplished our goal. People today are so lost and it's sad. MLK, and many other activists IMO would say that what people are complaining about today are ridiculous. It's all about victim culture nowadays and it's sad that it's effecting politics heavily. How about improving the economy and stop blaming others for your imperfections and your lack of success. I am a black CEO and I never considered my race to be the issue. It was my qualifications. I started my first business at 19, and I didn't make my first million in sales until age 30. Never once did I blame my race.

I'd try reading a few books to try and educate yourself on the issues. I'd never tell a person who claims any race, culture, religion, sex, anything, that they can't pretend to be someone else because the act of doing so is inherently bad. It's the intent that matters. Drawing lines around what belongs to your tribe in an attempt to define what other tribes are allowed to do only further divides everyone.
