The difference is basically what loni said. Black face is a characiture. Black Americans don't look only one way. There is no special traditional dress for black people. Some parts of Africa, however, wear certain garb that is part of their culture, so do some Native Americans. I don't see it offensive for ppl to admire a culture and dress in said garb. Black face is, "let's make fun of black ppl by painting our faces BLACK (tho the skin is different shades of BROWN) and making the lips extra big (although many black people's lips aren't that big and many races of people have naturally big lips) and hop around like a fool as if all black people act like fools." But I don't see anything wrong with someone dressing up like another culture as long as it's dignified, tasteful and done to compliment them.

@@TTeeee you dont see it because you dont understand, the regalia(clothes) worn have sacred meaning. They are not a costume, and are ridiculed constantly, theres even a team called the redskins. And natives are exiled to reservations like a concentration camp. Learn about our history

That's not always true, lots of people have good intentions and make mistakes, but it's definitely true in some cases. Some people do not have empathy for the people they hurt, and don't really care about repairing that hurt, and those are the people who are the ones like you're talking about.

It's ok for black comics to spend there whole time on stage making fun of white ppl , talking about how they walk , talk , live , dress .. but the second an 8yr old boy wants to dress up like Mike Lowry for Halloween because he likes him you want to all of a sudden be disrespected. She is on national tv with her own show and millions of people watching. If people see that she can say things like that and still be on tv, they will think it’s okay too. She is too grown to be playing stupid. What she said was irresponsible and just because it didn’t offend you personally doesn’t mean it’s okay. Then that’s racist, if they say they would not go out with anyone who has blond hair but they don’t mind redheads then that’s prejudiced but not racist, it’s the noun which you are referring to which make it racist or not. Btw “preference” for a race over another is literally racism. I don’t understand why people say oh it’s my preference, u are preferring a race....not a feature not a personality but a whole race.

She was not saying that the old "black-face minstrel show" was okay, just character portrayals. A white lady could love Niki Minaj, for example, and a black lady could like Kim Kardashian, and portray them on Halloween, just for fun. There's nothing racist about that, that is admiration for someone of another race!

Halie83: Yes, it was clear that Megyn didn't get it, and had no malintent. However, she has no integrity with me, as a result of her being a shill for Fox News during her years there as a Fox TV personality. Megan was complicit with Fox's agenda of wrongly and misinforming people on issues that had them vote against their own best interests, and instead voting for the interests of a wealthy corporate class. Besides, Megan just should have known. I'm an old white female elementary school teacher, and just KNEW that blackface is NEVER OK , even as a gesture of respect. The history of blackface is so saturated with dehumanization of a group of people, in a way that perpetuated a deep culture of cruel and abusive actions. How could Megyn NOT have known that?

I don't think people understand what Megyn Kelly was saying. She wasn't referring to historical Blackface. She was referring to wearing makeup to look like a character on Halloween. The two are not the same. She asked "what is racist" and spoke about Black people and White people painting their faces. She put them on the same level. She wasn't referring to historical Blackface where Black and White people would paint their faces with burnt cork, greasepaint or shoe polish, wear wooly matted wigs, white or red exaggerated lips, etc, and portray Black people in negative stereotypes. Blackface was not only about makeup, but also about portraying Black people with negative stereotypes, from their language, dances, clothes, education, etc. Historical Blackface, which is actual Blackface, is NOT what Megyn Kelly was talking about.

If anything, someone that wants to dress up as Diana Ross is showing appreciation for the culture. As long as they're not doing it in a derogatory manner, I don't see what the problem is. Plus Diana Ross is a part of American culture, I don't see why people want to segregate themselves from the rest of America. We should see ourselves as Americans, not by color. If this is such a big deal then where was the uproar for the movie White Chicks? Exactly there wasn't one, and trust me that wasn't showing appreciation for a culture, it was making fun of one. But who cares, this is America! Freedom of Expression, remember. This wasn't that type of issue, but even if it was, we should never take away someones right to freedom of expression and speech. You may not agree with it, but you should agree with the ability to do so. There is nothing you can say or do, outside of calling for violence, that I wouldn't fight for your right to do so. Once either side of the aisle begins to lose their rights so begins the fade of all our rights.

Lalka Marie, I'll watch the video, but regardless it doesn't matter. If it's not calling for violence, then it's fair expression. It may be disgusting and idiotic, but we're not forced to watch it, agree with it, or even be affected by it. It doesn't matter if it hurts someone's feelings or reminds a person of bad things. That's the point, Americans have a right to freedom of expression and speech. We are free to have our opinions, free to feel the way we want to about any issue, free to criticize, and free to be the kind of person we want to be. We're not always going to have people doing things we agree with, but it does mean that people have the right to do things of which we don't agree. People have the right to dress up as white, Asian, Mexican, Native American, or any other person that they'd like to portray. What's really sad is that this type of thing happens all of the time, but if it's not someone on the left then for some reason it's always blown out context and then they want to strip away people's rights. This is a dangerous path that we're on, and I implore you to reconsider your stance on these types of issues. Would you rather have your feelings protected and lose your rights, or keep your rights and not let someone else's idiocy affect your feelings? We've made tremendous strides in our country, and things will never revert to as they were as long as we have our rights!

People that say stuff like this are why everybody has to be defensive today, you're complaining about rights but won't utter a word about police brutality or vote suppression. You most likely will never even have the same outrage over corporate greed, gerrymandering, or housing discrimination. PC culture isn't the problem, america being retrograde decades after the civil rights movement is the problem.

  • @DaeZem

IMPENDING DOOM First I was referring to the person dressing up as Diana Ross, not Megan. I'm not here to defend Megan, I don't know what her feelings are and I don't care. I deal in a world of facts, not emotions. I'm here to defend the right for someone to Say or Express themselves in any way they choose. Your comment is a perfect example of why there is such tension in today's society. The problem with PC culture is that it approaches political issues from an emotional standpoint instead of looking at the facts. You're not a mind reader, but since it made you feel emotional it's a bad thing and people shouldn't do it, BS. You're citing things that are not based in fact, you're citing leftist talking points that have no basis in truth when it comes to the actual data. You want to talk about police brutality, what about the fact that this false narrative has gotten innocent officers killed and increased tension between cops and citizens. Are there bad cops, yes, but the data shows a very small percentage. Voter suppression, what about the fact that the left has continuously allowed illegal immigrants to flood the country and allowed them to vote, which suppresses the actual citizens' vote. Corporate greed, your leftists' leaders & groups are supplied endless amounts of money from corporations. Housing discrimination, we have laws to protect against that and they are enforced. Although the left's agenda has put millions on food stamps and incentives people to stay in poverty. That's what the promotion of free does. These are the facts and these are what matter. People have to stop bringing an emotional argument to politics, there's no place for it. When you do that, you are asking for the very thing you say your fighting against, fascism. You can not take away someone's right to do something because it makes you feel a certain way, that's asking for a world that adheres to only one sides viewpoint. That's why I stand up for these rights and I always will. If you do a little research you'll see that the lefts talking points are based mostly on opinion or misconstrued data. They find an issue that pulls to your emotions and use that to fulfill their agenda. They know this is the best way to control someone, when you're emotional you are much more likely to follow an issue blindly.

I think if you’re doing fictional characters like the mad hatter it is okay to paint your skin to appear lighter, white, and pale. The mad hatter is pale white. I think people need to understand the difference between what is offensive and not or what is cultural appropriation and not. If you’re gonna be a black panther character I would say you can wear the costume but there is no need to paint your skin black. There are obvious do’s or don’ts. Maui from Moana, I think there is no problem to wear the tattoos that Maui has but I think it’s unnecessary to paint your skin brown. I also think that people need to give everyone a break.

"Someone's culture is NEVER OK to be your costume.... Ever". Sad. So, why this issue is so fraught and confusing is that, according to this panellist, by her rules it would now mean that NO-ONE from another culture can EVER be your hero, to the extent that you want to BECOME them, through dress-up. So, really, that would mean that ALL dress-up costumes / role-playing should cease. No more little kids in Spider-man / Superman / Batman outfits; no more Elvis impersonators; no more drag-queens (appropriating being a woman!); no more Cowboys and Indians (think of the cultural shift required for little white dudes to even WANT to be the Indian now!); definitely no little African American kids (girls OR boys) dressing up as Elsa from 'Frozen' and signing 'Let It Go' at the top of their lungs; and DEFINITELY no non-black person wanting to acknowledge the power and character of ANY of the heroes of Wakanda! God forbid! Which reminds me; NO MORE NATIVITY SCENES!!! So, the question seems to be, 'How far do you go with the imitation?' Everything BUT the colour of the skin? Does a white Wakandan remain easily identifiable? All right people? Is this a case of throwing the baby out with the bath-water? (And, maybe, why Megyn Kelly thinks Santa Clause and Jesus were WHITE! She only ever saw WHITES dressing up and playing those roles WITHOUT correctly copying skin-tone?.....) I completely get why African-Americans feel that Al Jolsen Black-face was a demeaning stereo-typing (along with Golliwog dolls and cartoon characters); and has tonnes of negative emotional and cultural baggage. Also, why the whole Wakanda world is an all-too rare example of Black empowerment and of being cast as the central, authentic, intelligent, powerful good-guys is a rare (hopefully changing) cultural moment. Natural to want to keep that for yourself and not see it 'appropriated' by those who don't deserve it. As far as an outsider can, I think I get that impulse. I guess all I am suggesting is that the conversation and thinking around this needs to be a little less superficial. Is it possible that someone who is NOT from 'your' culture could try to imitate the image without being flippant, demeaning, insulting or crass? I think so. If not, no more Leis or palm head-wear given out at Hawaiian or Pacific islands on arrival or at ceremonies. Here is the question. Can imitation and adoption of cultural icons encourage understanding and inclusion, as opposed to being a mere insult, as this panel member suggests. My suspicion is the answer is, 'No', at least not for a generation or two AFTER America finally comes to terms with its rampant racism (whenever that is). In the meantime, I guess we just have to accept that we have to get well past the time when American politicians can imply their black opponent is a monkey before imitation is seen as a complement, not an insult. Sad.

What the issue comes down to is essentially, why should people get to dress up as a culture for one night without experiencing any of the struggles they face when the real people deal with being from that culture everyday and face issues of discrimination and racism. Also why do a characters skin tone play such a significant role for their traits/ appearance? it seems that this only occurs when the character is non-white.

For many years the people they were offending with blackface had no rights and could not speak up or out without fear of losing their life. I am in no- way saying black-face is by any means okay. However, I do have a question. Many girls look up to different Disney princesses/characters that are of a different race to them (i.e Mulan, Princess Tiana, Moana, etc.). What happens if a girl who is of a different race want to dress up as one of them? Would there be an issue with that. Obviously if it was my child I would not paint their face or body black, but I feel like dressing up as them could also become offensive. Please explain. I am not in anyway trying to argue, just curious.

There is no problem with wearing the costume of the characters. The issue is the historical significance of "the black face" and how it was used to mock african americans.

I’m very young and I’ve lived my whole life in a small country. I’ve never seen anyone disrespect a race by dressing up as one of them. Before I saw this I really thought it was okay for a white person to paint their face and body brown. The same goes for brown skin painted white. Is this not okay just because of the history behind portraying a different race? Do you think that if no one ever used ”blackface” or ”whiteface” to mock one another it would be okay to cosplay characters of other races (including skin color ) I’m not american so this is the first time I’m hearing about this.

As Loni said "you can be Diana Ross, but just be a white Diana Ross!" Let your kids dress as whatever they want but do not change their core characteristics like race. Kids usually want to be Moana because of strength and character. Teach them that they be all those things and still be themselves. They can adore a character and adopt the good traits but they don't have to look exactly like them. That lesson will take them far in life

I've had lots of friends who have no idea what it feels like to be me. I don't get upset or offended by them because their experience is nothing like mine. It's sad that in this time everyone is offended by everything now. I do agree that black face is an ugly thing but don't expect other people to understand how you feel all the time.

I agree. She should know what blackface and the sensitivity to the culture it is, but she might have been raised in a household where she wasn’t taught the historical significance behind it, and although a newswoman I don’t think she completely understands it. She wasn’t trying to be racist in any way and she was saying anyone who wants to dress up as a character typically wants to look like them as much as they can, so if they’re a different skin tone it’s normal to want to change yours to be more like theirs. But because of the sensitivity to blackface in particular in American history and African American culture people gave her backlash, when in reality she wasn’t looking at it from that viewpoint, she was looking at it more so from a naive innocent standpoint. A white child for example who has no idea about blackface who wants to dress up as Diana Ross for Halloween I 1000 percent believe would want to darken their skin to feel and look more like Diana. It’s natural to want to look as close to your idol as possible But because of the abuse and horrific actions done using blackface, we have been left with scars and sensitivity to anything remotely similar to it. That’s also natural. There is so much power, and evil ness within that history. But my is, including the Kendall Jenner thing, intentions matter and she didn’t have bad intentions. People are nitpicking anyone who steps out of line when in reality they need to be focusing on the people who genuinely have ill intent behind what they say. Kendall Jenner doing a photo shoot wearing a beautiful hairstyle and Megyn saying something ignorant that she didn’t have bad intentions behind are not the ones deserving of an attack here

What was she trying to say though? Because at BEST she pointed out just how ignorant and unaware she is about race in this country. At worse she's a racist. Blackface has NEVER been ok and Megyn is too old to cop the "I didnt know" excuse. She grew up in the 60s/70s. Blackface wasnt tolerated then either. Or she grew up around racists where mocking minorities was the norm I guess.

Briana Oliver if blackface had never existed no one would have an issue with changing your skin color to dress up as someone you love for Halloween I agree her words were not thought out well but she clearly was not thinking “blackface” when she was blabbering on about kids and Halloween costumes Instead of defensive attacks and making everyone out to be hateful, it would be more beneficial for you to say “hey maybe you shouldn’t have said that, maybe you could have worded it differently, because blackface is something that still affects my culture heavily and your words came across as though you didn’t acknowledge that, or care and that hurt me” Instead of instantly labeling her as racist attacking her Idk I hate the constant attack on people who do not have bad intentions making everyone out to be evil Whether she was educated or not her mind was not on blackface while speaking about Halloween costumes, it was a mistake. I understand calling her out in it, but I do not understand attacking her for it.

Al Jolson fought against black discrimination in the early twentieth century. He did the "blackface" act to mock the idea of "white supremacy" by showing the value of African American musical/cultural idioms. Consider that black people could not perform in these venues during this time, so he painted his face black to give a sense of presence in these venues. He was one of the most popular singers in his time period and he did it by singing African American influenced music, which helped bring the attention of African American music to white audiences. He was also an activist for the black community, and is noted as being one of the earliest individuals in popular culture to bridge a cultural gap between blacks and whites in the early twentieth century. I'd hardly call any of that racist.

Kelly you are ignorant as he was. BlAcks didn't ever need white people's help with our music or art or any thing else. We were doing brain surgery, building the pyramids as architecture, making black art the changed how the top white artist did tbeir art even today. White People are still trying to figure out how we did all this back in those times with out them. Your stereo type of blacks need your help or we cant do great things or simple things is incorrect. Whites helped their self to our music * secretly would seek into our clubs to hear & dance to it. Then had us come perform it ,yet didn't allow us to eat or be customers right were we worked entertaining them, & often like Pat Boone used & desperately tried to claim our music for their own. I hear Pats a Christian now.... White People can't disrespect us ,mock us, degrade us & tell us your doing thus for our own good, thats bull. That was for his sick Ass fame & rAcist career. He likes doing it so ge continued doing it period. He knew we were against it then. We didn't have the power to Stop it then. Stop your stupid racist nonsense of blacks can only be sucessful if some white person helps us in some degrading ignorant egotistical way. We helped whites. This country was built on our backs, & by our brains & experience. Including the white house & even the floors designed by blacks. We made America through Hamilton who made USA financial system. We were the labor for these industries. Our music ,art, fashion, food, stlye, politics & faith & religion is a major business & social contribution today. The man who owns Vigirin corporation & produced Janet Jackson,'s music bought an island off of her sale Berry Gordy of Motown put The Jackson 's in that position of Being millionare artist. A black man & produced. Not off of yours & evil black face Al Jolson contributions. We never needed your help, but to stop stealin, killin, & block in our lives & work. Motown with Berry Gordie produced rich Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Dianna ROss & more. The civil war was about blacks prayers & cries to God from black people to stop being raped, beaten, & worked to death to build this country without real wages, compensation & freedom from harm & forced slavery!!!!! For we were being kidnapped & murdered by white folks & other races to use us & all that we have. You are misguided & ignorant about races. Al Molson the sicko evil racist was a nightmare to blacks & still is & how dare you decide what's good for blacks with your ignorant ,harmful explanations, & nonsense.
