I once saw the ICE used by Amtrak at the central train station in Munich. The word "Amtrak" had been lightly painted over.

Yeah, the tubroliner and turbotrain are weird. But the Turbotrain is still the most bizarre and to this day still holds the NEC speed record at like 180ish mph.

The prerequisite for running ICE 1 was installing LZB PZB Sifa then increase voltage to 15kv 16.7hz on the Northeast Corridor washington-dc New Haven then extend 15kv 16.7hz Amtrak to Boston Providence from New Haven CT.

In the city I used to live, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, there is simply no railroad train transportation system for civilian use. The city is completely car centric. There is a railroad for commercial use only, to bring natural gas for the city to use. The first time I had the privilege of using a train, was when I visited San Diego, California, which is just crossing the border; The San Diego Trolley transportation system. It was magical, it was as if was in the future.

ABB X2000, it's one of our best legacies of national pride in Sweden after Volvo and Ikea.

For a moment I thought this was some sort of weird late April Fools joke (I am European) but then I watched the video! Holy F*ck, I didn’t know that Swedish X2000 and German Class 401 (I.C.E. 1) were in America! That’s sooooo interesting! But I suppose the ICE wasn’t successful because of the Eschede derailment, right? It was the cause for literally any export attempt failing so I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the case here too... Edit: So I looked a little deeper into this and apparently, the ICE set which was on trial is still in service under the name “Bruchsal” and according to DB, nearly all ICE 1 sets will be kept in service at least until 2030, though shortened with only 9 instead of 12 coaches.

@@tealmer3528 Sorry, I got that bit of information a little wrong. You see, the number from one of the power cars was 401 084, I accidentally googled “048” whoops. Anyway, on Wikipedia it showed that the number of the first power car is 401 084, so I googled it and voilà, I found the unit, now named Bruchsal...

Btw, 58 of the original 60 ICE1 trains are still in service (they got refurbished a lot) ... overall a quite good performance (if you dont park it under a bridge)

The ICE's were sent to the US in 1993, way before the Eschede derailment in 1998. Edit: the derailment was not because of faults in mechanics or electronics in the train, but because of the use of parts which were not tested or maintained well enough.

@@monke-ky7yx I’ve read into this and here’s what I got: After the America campaign, Siemens and AEG tried to sell the ICE to America and Taiwan (the latter being a mix out of ICE2 power cars and TGV coaches). In the end Amtrak decided to order the Acela Express but still considered the option. After initial testing the Acela was more and more favoured and when the Eschede derailment happened public opinion wasn‘t all too positive for the ICE1 and so all hopes for exports were tarnished. Ironically the ICE1 will stay longer on our rails than the original Acela Express.

3:50 Our City Hall sure is pretty. Having X2000 sets running on some US routes sure would have been awesome. But unless it got priority over freight, it wouldn't make all that much difference I guess.

Yeah pretty sure a portion of the "promo video" that I found those clips in where filmed in Sweden. Theres also a clip at 0:59 where the x2000 is running on electrified single track, which just doesn't exist in the US at that speed.

The bridge at 1:22 is here in Stockholm too, but has a companion bridge now for commuter rail & pedestrians & bikes. Seeing it stand there alone makes it all feel so long ago. 4:12 ! the colors on that loco coming the other way. I miss those coors. Bright orange with a white stripe. Nowadays SJ is using a flat medium grey on all their trains. Would love to see them return to that orange color scheme (which would be a nice reply to the Dutch trains being blue & yellow :D )

This is heartbreaking. The X2000 would been a better choice model that actual Acela. Ironic is that both SJ X2000 and DB ICE are still operation and Amtrak Acela first generation is going to be replace...

All these test trains are cool and all, but the Acela we got is pretty cool in its own right, and all of these trains have parts of their design in the Acela.

I always loved the AEM-7s pulling Northeast Regionals. Something about an AEM-7 and an Amfleet consist makes so much sense.

The first 30 or so seconds just set the mood for *a time* in rail history. A sad, lost one, but a cool one.

The phase III Aem-7 is a whole vibe

Correct however to run the Electric versions they need to be powered at 15kv 16.7hz Deutsche Bahn Netze ÖBB SBB CFF FFS current system then ETCS LZB PZB Sifa. If you are wondering what Amtrak trains use it's an Alerter the American and Canadian equivalent to German Austrian Sifa system United Kingdom DSD France Vacma. amtrak is kinda ok, its good if u dont have a car and need to get from point A to B, the route from Seattle to Eugene is pretty scenic which is nice I guess

That "speed 136" cut very deep, out here in SLC, home to the closed Desert Wind and Pioneer lines and not much else Amtrak now or really in the future. Here's hoping there will be anything over 100 MPH in the West in my lifetime. I highly recommend a scroll through the list of closed Amtrak stations: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_former_Amtrak_stations

I think it's mainly because we've focused on freight for so long that those are the only good engines/trains that we build anymore. We let all of our local passenger companies die like The Budd Company
