A Japanese rail fan here. It looks like the video is the Shinkansen of the late 80s. The late 80s was an awesome time for Japan with the bubble economics, and it was also a very exciting time for trains since it was when the national railroad was transformed in to JR. Unfortunately both Japan and its train industry has declined since then. It is a time I could only dream of since I was born in 2000.

Declined or not, its still leagues ahead of most railway systems around the globe. Coming from someone from Denmark, you guys have something special on your hands. We're only just now starting to get trains and infrastructure thats capable of 200km/h and decently frequent urban rail systems.

​@@drdewott9154 I second this, though more on the infrastructure side. Coming from the UK, most of our infra was built in the 19th century and largely hasn't been upgraded since then, so our lines are horrendously congested.

@@nerd2814 True here in the U.S. Even our fastest current line, the Northeast Corridor between DC and Boston is a Frankenstein's monster of new stuff and insanely old stuff. There's cool stuff in the works, but it will be a long time coming for anything remotely resembling Europe, let alone Japan.

I recently listened to the first song, immediately recognised it, good taste. Edit: Actually, a lot of Japanese City Pop is good music and oftentimes forgotten.

Honestly early duckbill shinkansen (700-N700) is so much more awesome than the rest, but the 0 and 100 series have that special thing, not sure what.

The messed up thing is I actually already associate these songs with long drives to and from upstate New York because the Lake Shore Limited is the opposite of the Sinkansen.

"Shinkansen" pronounced the way Roz from WTYP would, of course.

What an interesting genre. The first song sounds like Japanese disco, then the second is lounge singer crooner stuff like Frank Sinatra.

The Shinkansen 100 and 300 Series were probably the most aesthetic trains in the whole fleet. Everything about them was the 80s Japanese ethos.

I'll take "Cool things we could totally have done here if we could bother to get off our backsides and do it" for 15,000円, Alex.
