Many years ago I talked to Porter Jesse Buck who said that steam trains in the 1930s went 110 MPH on the stretch west of Kalamazoo according to a gauge in the club car. Speed is more a function of track condition than equipment.

5 or 6 Amfleets is about the maximum that one P32 can pull and still keep an Empire Sercice schedule. Longer than that and you start having trouble accelerating to and maintaining 110 mph. The Lake Shore Limited runs at about 7-8 cars, and with one unit it usually struggles to get past 95 mph.

I don’t know the exact statistics as to the number killed while crossing railroad tracks. But come on people, just how lazy does one have to be not first look both ways before starting across any tracks!! And to see some videos of people actually going around stop arms. Then to read later that their loved ones sued the railroad .claiming they,(the railroad)were negligent. Even though, the lights were flashing. Or at the very least, the train was blaring its horn repeatedly. Regardless of whether or not there were crossing arms and warning lights, one still must look both ways before crossing.

@@Ven100 While there are no plans to increase speeds above 110 MPH on this line, you can have grade crossing above 110 MPH. The FRA allows grade crossings all the way up to the speed of 125 MPH so long as you have an impenetrable barrier in place. Like the rising concrete blocks they use in Europe or metal nets that lower down. If Amtrak wanted to raise the speed above 110 they could with such mods. But the cost vs time saved is simply not worth it.
