110 MPH Amtrak Trains on the Empire Corridor
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Between Hudson, NY and Schenectady, NY, track speed on Amtrak’s Empire Corridor reaches 110 MPH in several locations. On May 26, 2019, we are trackside at several of them to see Amtrak trains hustle through at maximum authorized speed.
First, an eastbound Empire Service doing every last bit of 110 MPH absolutely rockets through the Hamilton Way grade crossing on the outskirts of Castleton-on-Hudson, NY.
Train 1 - EB Empire Service
AMTK 714 P32ACDM (Phase III)
Next up is 49, the westbound Lake Shore Limited. At Colonie, NY, we catch the full consist just after the combining of sections at Albany-Rensselaer, as the heavy long-distance train hustles past the Cordell Road grade crossing at 100+ MPH.
Train 2 - 49 Lake Shore Limited
AMTK 125 P42DC (Phase V)
AMTK 138 P42DC (Phase V)
At the same location we also see the eastbound Maple Leaf fly through on its way to Albany for an engine swap.
Train 3 - 64 Maple Leaf
AMTK 104 P42DC (Phase V)
Finally, we see two Empire Services blast through the otherwise sleepy town of Castleton-on Hudson, blowing for a pair of grade crossings that connect the town to its riverfront.
Train 4 - WB Empire Service
AMTK 702 P32ACDM (Phase III)
Train 5 - EB Empire Service
AMTK 705 P32ACDM (Phase V)

There’s nothing more magical than traveling by train. Even seeing videos like these is enough to tempt you to want to climb on board.

I’m afraid of flying. I never stepped foot in an airplane in my entire life. But we rode Amtrak in August 1989 from Philly to Orlando for about a week at Walt Disney World. In Rainman from 1988, Raymond had a fear of flying so his brother Charlie drove him to California with a couple motel stays. When Charlie had to send Raymond back to Walbrook in Cincinnati, Ohio he took him to the Los Angeles Union Station and put him on an Amtrak train.
It doesn't look that fast on the NEC but here it's absolutely incredible

I agree! In this case you are seeing these machines performing at the absolute raw edge of their capability, while on the corridor it's not quite that way.
I can’t stop watching these genesis locos, especially going their full speed. So glad I found this line.
I do love the look of the black paint on the Empire Service engines.
Spectacular videos of the speeding Amtraks (and beautiful scenery)!
Beautiful scenery and those things are MOVING!!!
They should electrify the corridor in the future together with an new regional rail. And concrete ties should allow 125 mph on some parts. The corridor should also be straightend.

The NYC - Albany is a great modernization candidate for sure, 125 on most of the route with electrification is certainly possible with some zones of 110 and 90 on the more pricier curves to realign. Alan fisher actually mentioned that corridor in one of his videos.

Concrete ties are Troublesome I am told, they're inflexible crack and break, and difficult to replace
They trains move FAST! I hadn't realized how fast until I watched this video 🚄
reminds me of my childhood watching these.
Its been awhile. I need to get back up there!! Great catches!
SPEED and POWER (power solves all things)
It always fascinates me when you see a train coming in the distance, for what seems like ages it doesn’t seem to be getting any nearer.
amtrak be showin wassup with their diesels
I've never seen trains that fast running on wooden train ties.

It's all in their maintenance. Remember that trains have been doing that speed for decades on wood ties. Just concrete lasts longer and is more stable.

And I assume there are signs warning motorists TRAINS MAY EXCEED 80 MPH ahead of grade crossings in the affected area.

DANG, GOOD THING YOU WERE FINE, AWESOME CATCHES!
Wonderful video of Amtrak trains on The Empire Corridor at 110 mph , the Scenery is spectacular along the Hudson, I wonder 🤔 what the NYC 20th Century Limited maximum speed along this Stretch of track was?
Awesome catches.
Excellent excellent excellent!!
Excellent 👍
Slow down 😮 fast and furious!!!
Great shots man !
Yea nice catches
Nice
Nice vid subscribed!
The new Acela Express will top 160 mph on the NEC this year.
I saw Amfleet II's on the trains :D
1:35 why did that have a NER cafe car?

Back in 2019 when this was recorded, 448/449 usually ran with an Amfleet I club-dinette as the food service car and the business class seats were sold as a third fare class option. This train must have had the car swapped out for a full dinette Amfleet I, all of which have the NER logo.

Does Amtrak own the former NYC from Manhattan to Albany or does Metro-North own part of it? And Albany to Buffalo and west and toward Boston is CSX owned?
@amtrak706
6 ай бұрын
Amtrak only owns the Empire Connection from Penn Station to CP 12 just north of Spuyten Duyvil. The old NYC from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie is owned and operated by Metro-North. From Poughkeepsie to Hoffmans (west of Schenectady) it is owned by CSX but long-term leased and operated by Amtrak. From Hoffmans west it is owned and operated by CSX.
Do trains always travel 110 MPH on the Empire Corridor?
@amtrak706

There are select locations where track speed reaches 110, and every scheduled train through them is made of equipment capable of it. Sometimes, longer trains with only one unit like the NY section of 48/49 do struggle to reach full speed, though.
Great footage, where was the last shot filmed?

That's the only place outside of the NWC that Amtrak hits over 100mph.
In name of safety, in European Union its forbidden train passing more than 140 km/h (87 mph) in railcrossing. In lines with more that speed, don't exist railcrossings.
@arkitect156

Newer lines here don't allow that either but considering our lack of investment kts hard to separate grade crossings, that and the fact that some of amtraks other routes have freight run on them too and alot of freight lines would loose there minds if we closed there track for grade separations: /

I have seen videos of trains in Sweden definately travelling at speeds higher than 140 km/h past railway crossing.
Looks more like 110 kph, not mph. (63 mph)

Remember that it's a lot bigger than your car. Bigger something is, the harder it is to know its speed. That's why cargo ships look like they're crawling but they're probably doing 30-35 mph over the water. It's very believable that Amtrak can do 110, and very reasonable to say most of these shots show such cases
