Amin Elhassan Breaks Down the Jontay Porter Betting Scandal | The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

Спорт

Amin is in the studio to discuss the Jontay Porter scandal with Dan and Greg Cote. The show continues to expand on the Shohei Ohtani scandal, and how betting scandals are being policed in a world where gambling is legal. Then, Tim Kurkjian joins the show in front of his fake background to continue the conversation about Shohei Ohtani. Also, he is starting a new podcast with his son, and Dan is very excited that he gets to share this time with his son the way he got to share Highly Questionable with Papi. Plus, Tim is really bad at technology and we bring out the Looks Like Game to make Tim giggle.

This was a tough listen. Gambling is a highly addictive thing, and even if it’s more prevalent, not all of us gamble, or should be. Everyone in the sports media space has been bought out by a betting company so no there is no such thing as “no bias” anymore.

The sports betting segment was inherently flawed as the argument was “Europe has had this for decades, America is just catching up…” What that fails to acknowledge is the morality of sports gambling specifically has only been argued and debated even more as the years have gone on. The issue is largely centered on the advertising in a venue where children are not only present but welcomed in abundance. A recent survey has concluded that nearly 500,000 in England(close to 1% of population) are believed to have gambling addiction with another 1.8 million (3% of population) at risk. A different study from The Gambling Commission (the British gambling & casino regulator) said the number is as high as 2.5% & 3.8% respectively, though their methodology remains unclear. The root cause is credited at children being indoctrinated into gambling culture from a very young age. The Premier League for its part have announced that from 2026 onward all gambling sponsorship on the front of jersey (the big money visible one) will be banned with the potential of all gambling on jerseys banned in the future. The argument obviously is not should gambling be legal for adults. In that aspect America has been 20 years behind, but right now, Europe is grappling with whether to allow the gambling companies prey on the children. Currently the Premier and possibly more in the future are beginning to say no

Amin needs to look up Dan Tan. Dude was having things happen on the ground like, power lines to a stadium get cut with the underdog in the lead at halftime so the game result at half is counted as "valid" and his bets would get paid. This is NOT something to normalize. They are ahead of the curve, because they've had their blatant scandals, and now everything's much more cautious. There's a reason the UK is considered the money laundering capital of the world. Please, please, PLEASE do a deeper dig into European gambling scandals before brushing this crap under the rug and saying, "Oh, this is just it being policed."

Perceptive take since the athletes that are able to reach that top 1% tend to have such a compulsive focus and discipline that they don't make the best social interacting types. Distractions mess with that focus and you cna underperform, which can drive perfectionists batty.

Sports books always expose irregular betting volume, which is the key to exposing points shaving rings. The novelty of this episode has inflated its prominence. Once players and their support system understand there is no way to participate in rigging games / point shaving without being exposed the problem will diminish. There will be one-offs into the future (like fixing opening round matches of minor tennis tournaments) but there isn't longterm danger of constant point shaving / rigging games in the 4 major professional sports.

Internet Citizen, have you ever looked into the world of internet streamers gambling? A world where the entire outcome from start to finish is a black box that the user cannot see, and unlike slot machines in Vegas, there are no checks and balances to determine if the posted odds are validated. A world where people play poker online, and poker developers have knowingly put in cheats to let them see the cards of all other players at the table? I feel like an old man yelling about this stuff, but we really have gone way, way too far. It's not that we're nearing a tipping point. We're past the tipping point and we're gaining downward momentum.

Its remarkable how Dan continues to say with a straight face how gambling is infecting sports while being paid tens of millions of dollars by a gambling company. And he doubles down. I don't get it. Mike is right and Dan is just trying to be dramatic to weave a tale of flying to close to the sun with gambling and sports.

What happened to OTB? They were everywhere growing up. Sports gambling was illegal so long for many reasons.

Dan is either not listening to what anyone is saying or being hyperbolic for clicks. Either way stop

lol Dan couldn't have been more wrong on this. you can't buy even a fringe NBA player. juice is no way near worth enough the squeeze for the player. Jontay is just an idiot. nothing more to see here.
