Hello, Ian Brewing in monasteries dates back to medieval times when monks brewed beer for their own consumption and for visitors, as water was often unsafe to drink. The Trappist beer tradition began with the Cistercian monks, a branch of the Benedictine order, founded in 1098. The stricter Trappist branch emerged in the 17th century. Monasteries brewed beer to sustain themselves financially, adhering to the Rule of St. Benedict, which emphasizes self-sufficiency. In the 19th century, Trappist brewing as we know it began, particularly with the re-establishment of monasteries in Belgium after the Napoleonic wars. Currently, there are 11 recognized Trappist breweries worldwide that have been certified by the International Trappist Association. They are: Achel (Belgium): Known for its strong ales, particularly the Blond and Bruin beers. Chimay (Belgium): One of the most famous, brewing beers like Chimay Blue, Red, and White. Orval (Belgium): Known for its unique Orval beer with a distinctive hop bitterness and Brettanomyces yeast. Rochefort (Belgium): Produces Rochefort 6, 8, and 10, strong ales with complex flavors. Westmalle (Belgium): The origin of the "Tripel" style, also brewing Dubbel. Westvleteren (Belgium): Famous for its limited availability and the highly regarded Westvleteren 12. Zundert (Netherlands): Produces Zundert 8 and Zundert 10, noted for their spicy flavors. La Trappe (Netherlands): Known for a wide range of beers including Quadrupel and Tripel. Tre Fontane (Italy): The only Trappist brewery in Italy, producing a eucalyptus-infused Tripel. Spencer (U.S.): The first American Trappist brewery, known for its Belgian-style ales. Mont des Cats (France): Though brewed at Chimay, it has its distinct flavor, not certified but often associated. Trappist beers generally fall into the following styles: Patersbier (Single): A lighter ale, often only available within the monastery. Usually low in alcohol and served to monks. Dubbel: A dark ale, usually ranging between 6-8% ABV. Noted for rich, malty sweetness with flavors of dried fruit, caramel, and spices. Tripel: A strong, pale ale with higher alcohol content (typically around 8-10% ABV). Characterized by a dry finish, fruity esters, and spicy phenols from yeast. Quadrupel: The strongest style, with ABV typically over 10%. Full-bodied, dark, and often with flavors of dark fruits, toffee, and spices. Blond Ale: A lighter, golden ale with fruity and spicy notes from the yeast. Specialty Beers: Some breweries produce unique beers that don't fit neatly into traditional styles. Examples include Orval, which uses Brettanomyces yeast, and Tre Fontane's eucalyptus-infused Tripel. Trappist beers have influenced many modern craft brewers. The strong ales, like Tripel and Quadrupel, have become widely imitated outside of monasteries.

I believe Achel lost it's Trappist licence last year and unfortunately Spencer closed in 2022. In the mean time an Austrian (Engelszell) and English (Tynt Meadow) brewery did get a trappist licence in the last 15 years or so, with Tynt Meadow at the time being the 12th officially recognised Trappist brewery. We are down to 10 official ones now though and then Mont des Cats as a semi-official one.

You tried the wrong Rochefort, the 10 in my (Belgian) opinion is that it is the best beer in the world, marginally better than a West-Vleeteren or a St Bernardus Abt 12 (which is a good option also, better than the one you featured).

I’m from Westmalle village, the trapist beers are secret recepies from the monks who make it. The company is still owned by the monks and the income let them buy the land and forrests in the village and neighbourhoods to protect them from being destroyed by making houses. So it’s really interesting! You should really try the westmalle tripel trapist, which is even a bit stronger :) delicious

One thing (as a belgian) to mention. Its best (like a wine) , if you don't use different glasses, best to rinse out the glass with water before you pour in a different beer. The lingering flavor of the previous one will stick to the glass.

In the early 90s, one of our football/soccer clubs, Germinal Ekeren, played a European game against a Scottish team (Celtic Glasgow). The Scottish fans spent most of the day drinking the dark beers ... which are almost twice as strong as the ones they're used to. It was a warm summer day and many of the Scottish fans didn't even make it to the game. The cops had to go around and pick sleeping Scottish fans off the streets and move them to a safe spot to sleep it off.

Also, an uncle of mine was with NATO troops in Sarajevo. He had the night shift and shared his container 'apartment' with two Americans. One day after there was quite a bit of sniper activity, it bothered him that his bunk mates were so loud while he was trying to compile his report. So, he gave them a couple of Duvels, which look like regular pilsner beer, but are 7.5%. He got to write his report in peace and quiet after that.

    - The beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks themselves or under their supervision. - The brewery must be of secondary importance within the monastery and it should witness to the business practices proper to a monastic way of life. - The brewery is not intended to be a profit-making venture. The income covers the living expenses of the monks and the maintenance of the buildings and grounds. Whatever remains is donated to charity for social work and to help persons in need. So you are correct, they have to donate their profits to charity. I learned that from you. Thx.

To say "cheers" in Belgium, it sort of depends on where you are in Belgium. Most people in the northern part, where I live, say "Schol". For correct pronunciation (because I know you care): the -ch- bit in that word is pronounced the same as the -J- in Spanish. Got some per-beer-comments for y'all: - Westmalle: one of my personal go-to's in summer. It's fresh and full of character. It's indeed a beer you take your time for, which you can tell without tasting or even reading the label. It comes in a brown bottle (unless it's on tap of course), like most dark beers, which allows you to keep part of the beer in the bottle on the terrace table. The dark bottle will keep a maximum of sunlight away from the beer, which would otherwise make your brown ale go stale much faster. - Zundert is actually a small village on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. I live about 30 miles away from it, but I've honestly never tasted the beer. I probably can't help you with the pronunciation, as the -U- sound in dutch is the same as -Ü- in German, and most native English speakers are notoriously bad at pronouncing it. No offense intended lol - Rochefort: I ike it, but don't drink it often. It's definitely not my favorite, but I can report is goes very well with a cheese-and-salami board on the side -St-Bernardus: I only drank it once when I was taste-testing a lot of beers, so no personal notes, because I simply don't remember enough, sorry LOL I do remember that I liked it, but that's really not interesting enough to mention. "Belgium, you make awesome beers!" - We know, it's the one thing we're definitely proud of! About the lambic, gueuse and other fruit-type beers: their alcoholic contents can vary between 2 and 8%. I suppose they printed it very small, but the producers are legally obligated to print the alcoholic content on the label. Generally they're enjoyed more by women than men. I'm not as well versed on fruity beers as I am with the heavier stuff though. That said, I have tasted some and must say that the brand you got, Lindemans, is imho one of the better commercial ones. Some of the lesser known lambics are still brewed in the exact same way as they were in the 13th century, which in and of itself is a good reason to try them. It's like a fresh glass of history!

Gueuzes aren't necessarily mostly drank by women - which is basically a way of saying they are more to the taste of people who don't drink beer as often. Fruit beers do have that reputation somewhat correctly, but gueuzes and even some krieks (cherry) are actually quite sour. While those are absolutely refreshing and a favourite of mine (the Drie Fonteinen Golden Blend comes to mind), they are definitely a bit of an acquired taste, something for pretty entrenched beer drinkers looking for something new, rather than for someone who just drinks beer every once in a while. (Edit: the last 5-10 years many other fruit beers also got the sour to very sour treatment, there's a lot of interesting tastes there. I myself don't particularly enjoy the sweet ones.) As you stated, some lambics are probably closest to what medieval beer would have been, also slightly sour, probably the taste wasn't as precise as contemporary beers. As far as I know, the oldest recipes still kicking around are from the late 19th century.

I have recently discovered your account & have really enjoyed your take on sports/beers/car racing etc and appreciate you looking outside the USA to give us your opinions. I like that your reactions are honest and not just aimed at giving that "American shocked at the world" type of vid that seems popular on KZread. Being a Brit, i wonder if you have been able to source any Ales in your quest for beer sensations. It seems you like the wheat type of European beers most so would probably not like most Ales we get in the UK, but Pedro might. If you can source any Ales (as opposed to beer) try getting NEWCASTLE BROWN ALE, THEAKSTONS OLD PECULIAR, BISHOPS FINGER, PEDIGREE AMBER ALE, MCEWANS CHAMPION (or EXPORT). These are the names of the beer not the brewer. Thanks again for your natural enthusiasm and keep producing vids please. GR

Hi gang. It’s a pity you don’t have Welsh beer, our equivalent is “Iechyd Dda” difficult to pronounce but iechyd is “yekid tha” pronouncing the k as ch in chap and the dd as th in the. Literally means iechyd, health with dda meaning good. Iechyd dda means good health, have a good night, get the Tylenol in! I worked in The Netherlands for nearly 5 years and we used to get Belgium Trappist beer in most bars. In the better bars you get a matching glass, some are incredible. Kwak comes in a chemistry type glass with a wooden flask holder, the there is also the beer Delirium Tremens in a glass with Pink Elephants, the DT’s is alcoholism. In the Dutch & Belgian bars you get much more froth/head. If there's too much they have a plastic strip to level the froth off. in the UK the froth counts as part of a pint, the legal measure. Too much froth, less beer in the UK.

Nice of you to try our lovely beers and cool video! Just some friendly comments from a Belgian Beerlover (and employee in a small brewery): Zundert is indeed a trappist, but it's from The Netherlands (ours are better ;) ), we don't say 'proost', we say 'Santé!' Belgians are quite keen on drinking the beers in the fitting glasses, we have one for each! In a beer tasting, we would use one that fits the selection most, Westmalle or Orval glasses are a good option for that. There are a few rules for a beer to be called a trappist, most importantly, it has to be brewed in an abbey, exclusively by monks, coördinated by an Abt (leader of monks), they often make a fitting cheese with the beer, also the cheeses are amazing! If you like the brown Westmalle, try the blond triple (9,5% alc.) its even better in my opinion! I'm not the biggest fan of Zundert myself, but the La Trappe from The Netherlands is amazing, they even have a quadrupple (one step higher than a triple beer). Sint-Bernardus is indeed not really a trappist, because of the strict rules. The beer is not exclusively brewed by monks, but they have the trappist recipe, I personally love the Sint-Bernardus Abt 12 the most, it resembles our most famous, but most rare beer of them all, called Westvleteren (they actually bought the recipe from the monks). Westvleteren is a special one and I'm not sure if you can even find it in your country.. You can only buy it in the abbey itself, and you're only allowed to take one crate every year + you have to show up with the exact same empty crate for a refill the next year. The monks write down the numberplate of your car to keep accounts. Or you can simply buy it in a bar for the price of 15 to 20 euros per glass (which is waaay too much for us Belgians, we pay 4 to 6euros for these beers in a bar). But surely, Westvleteren is the most traditional of them all, its dark brown and very strong, because the monks brew it like in the old days, there's not so much production every year, hence the restrictions of buying a lot of them. Another thing which is done frequently with both Orval and Westvleteren, is to store them in our basements for long periods of time in order to ripe them. The duration of this storage is really depending on individual taste, I personally like a two year old Orval the most. Keep in mind the alcohol percentage rises when you store and ripe them ;) The fruity Lindemans beers are a poor choice for Belgians, the fruity beers from Brewery Boon are so much better. If you're interested in trying more Belgian Trappists, here's my ideal selection: Orval (amber, also very traditional and not a big production), Westvleteren (extremely difficult to find), Westmalle Triple, Chimay Blue (quadrupple, dark), Chimay White (Triple, blond), Rochefort 12 (quadrupple, dark). Good abbey beers: Sint-Bernardus (Abt 12, quadrupple dark), Halmont-Achel (used to be a trappist, but lost their title because of the rules), Averbode (normal blond, fresh taste like the Zundert). Normal breweries with very good beers: Omer, Triple Karmeliet, Boon, Roman (Adriaan Brouwer Oaked of this brewery is amazing), Gulden Draak. And there are so much more kinds, depending on your taste, for me as a Belgian, it's literally almost impossible to try all of them in a lifetime. We ave bars which serve more than 400 beers.. Enjoy them!

Dat is allemaal geen bier. Er bestaat maar 1 lekker fruitbier en dit is "rodenbach"

@@williamdalton3415 I agree on the Rodenbach, my favorite beer. There's also Duchesse de Bourgogne, like Rodenbach it's also ripened in oak barrels, it has a smoother taste than Rodenbach.

I also prefere the Duchesse de Bourgogne and then there also the Queue De Charrue. But for fruity beers I always go for the Liefmans, has real fruit instead of grenadine

@@ronaldflou9636 I actually prefer Rodenbach to the Duchesse. Never heard of Queue de Charrue, will have to look for it. Liefmans is a bit too sweet for me.

You really got some of the good stuffs there ! And I love that you got some kriek (kriek means Cherry) for the ladies. I'm impressed you succeeded to get those in US, well done ! ❤ from Belgium Specially the double westmalle, I didn't even know it existed, I only know the triple Westmalle et also the most people take the St Benardus abt 12 (over 10%, they want the booze). PS: We say "santé" in the south and "gezondheid" in the north, that means salud. Proost is in the Netherlands, Prost in Germany

Tripel beers and quadruple beers are (almost always) blonde dubbel are darker beers. Tripel is good in summertime, dubbel is better for wintertime.

If you ever get over to our side of the pond it is well worth going to the Belgium city of Brugge which is both beautiful and a great place to sample the beers.
