Last time ('01) I was in the US, I was there on deployment. I remember getting weird stares whilst I working my way through my 3rd pitcher of beer. I actually got asked did I have a drink problem! My answer was three fold, "No I don't have a drink problem, I'm British. Not only am I British, I'm a serving member of Her (now His) Majesties Royal Navy, we're trained to drink everyone else under the table & still be able to get back onboard".

The "let's drink the bar dry if someone else is paying for it" mentality is really not uncommon in the UK. My flatmate told me about his company Christmas party when that happened - this was a software development company, bear in mind. Their boss put his credit card behind the bar at 5pm, and between then and closing time (11 pm, so 6 hours), the party racked up a bar bill of £30,000 and pretty much emptied every barrel of beer the pub had, drank every bottle of wine they had in stock, and damn nearly finished off all the spirits on the optics too - and those are big 2 litre spirit bottles. The pub had to get an emergency delivery from the brewery the next day, just so they wouldn't have to be closed for lack of stock. Though I dare say they were pretty happy about it, having sold that much stock in one day. The boss whose credit card it was? He could afford it - his card had a credit limit of 5 times that amount. This wasn't the first time he had done this, so he knew what to expect.
On the drink driving thing, it IS super frowned upon in the UK too and you'd be properly socially shamed by everyone if you tried driving after 4 glasses of wine - just making sure it's known that that was part of the joke!

I think that it's gradually become socially strictly taboo over a timeframe of about two decades. Weird how that's happened but definitely for the better.

Maybe with some of the people you know, majority of the people I know would drink twice that & think it’s sound to drive 🤦🏻♂️🤣
There certainly is a difference in drink culture. Whilst I was in the military I used to drink regularly with USAF guys when on detachment. Lightweights.

I’m in the UK and we bumped into a couple of American lads on our Friday pub crawl in town. One of my mates was drinking a bottle of Budweiser. One of the Americans was asking him why he’s drinking that when we have real ale and our pints are huge. Apparently American pints are 20% smaller and it’s also common to drink half pint glasses. My mate explained he was drinking Bud because he was working the next day! Anyway later in the night one of them was throwing up over a wall, and the other was slouched against the wall. While me and a couple of others were heading over to a nightclub for another 3 hours of drinking.

Jack is in a sitcom called Fresh Meat, with Simon from The Inbetweeners (Joe Thomas). It's about a group of youngsters going to university and having to share a house together. It's really good. The show is made by the makers of Peep Show. It's worth checking out. Keep up the good work mate, I love watching your reactions.

No matter where you are in the US the drinking culture is still very different, you have to come here to compare it truly. The easiest way to describe it is that it’s just way more ingrained in everyday culture, it’s not just about drinking a lot. We really don’t have the ‘acceptance’ of drinking and driving that exists in the US despite this because we don’t have the same reliance on driving. As for the rowdy thing it’s not so much that, you’ve seen enough of our comedy (that’s on broadcast TV like the Inbetweeners) to know on the whole we tend to be less proper than Americans despite the stereotypes being the reverse

Jack's also done some acting (Bad Education, Fresh Meat - two sitcoms), he's also done a travel tour series with his Father (Michael Whitehall, who is significantly older (Michael is 82, Jacks 34) typically playing of cultural differences and the age gap, with some sweet moments, the two also hosted a short lived chat show together plus Jack has acted in numerous one offs as well as hosted a few award shows. Travel's with My Father would probably be something you'd enjoy, not just for the difference and banter between the two (especially Michael speaking graphically about sex in front of Jack) but as they've visited South East Asia, Eastern Europe, USA, Australia and a minor tour of the UK.

Something a lot of people don't know, including many in the UK, is that in the UK the legal drinking age is 5. As long as it is in private (at home, or a private event), parents can legally let their 5 year old drink whatever they want. It is very normal in this country for kids to get drunk, multiple times, long before they are 15.

You know when you meet a Brit and they say they dont drink ... Its not because they are a lightweight or health conscious its because that person is an absolute monster and they have learnt its really not a good idea they drink because you can only dodge death so many times
The Christmas drinks bit is so true! We had a Christmas party at a company I used to work for where the CEO purposely provided a free bar all night. Each year he would encourage us to try and break the record of the length of the bar receipt from the previous year and was disappointed when we didn't.
Jack has been on WILTY a few times and was introduced as posher than David . Some good stories , he has an older father who is also a bit of a character and they did a series of shows together .
I loved the way you ended a rant with " YOU PRICK" , You're one of us now mate.
I've lost count of the amount of times I've been in other European countries and had to apologise on behalf of rude British tourists. We all have them.
The Brit rotten apples tend not to be the ones that go to the US. They go to Spain, Greece, etc, hate anything local there, demand the British pub and British fried breakfast experience, and seem to truly believe that speaking English loudly, slowly and with many insults is somehow a universal language that all native people across the world should understand

You need to watch Bad Education, it was Jack’s tv show and it’s brilliant. There’s 3 seasons and a movie, but they’re bringing it back with a new class as well as some of the previous cast. He also did some travelling shows with his extremely uptight, almost octogenarian father and it’s hysterical 😂

The drink driving comment was clearly a joke. You can be over the limit for drinking 1 pint of beer. We use an electronic breath tester. You're either under or over the limit. If you're over you are arrested and you lose your licence for a period of time. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

It was interesting that you mentioned coupons. I haven't seen any here in NZ for many years now. The specials and "one offs" are still here but are simply advertised in flyers etc and marked on the in store price tags. The drinking thing was interesting, when I was attached as a member of a NZ headquarters group to a US division in the US when we were in the officers' club the Kiwis would get a six pack each time we went to the bar which raised a few eyebrows as our hosts were getting by on single cans or bottles.
Regarding Americans that always kick up a fuss and act very entitled, there are thousands of people like that in Britain.
Once you’ve finished Inbetweeners (and the 2 movies) Bad Education is a great one to move onto 😃 I’d suggest Peep Show as it’s arguably the greatest British sitcom of all time, but it’s getting increasingly difficult to upload on YT.
As a brit i love your attitude ...you get us 🙂
You need to watch... 'Travels with my Father' by Jack Whitehall, he basically goes on trips with his properly old dad, whos great. You get to understand him alot better (...he does a US trip too)
It's so true about the manners. In Britain, much the same as any ancient culture, that once upon a time was extremely violent, people learn very formal manners in order not to die in short order, very much like Japan, but to be fair I've always found most Americans to be very polite, guess I've just been lucky. I think sometimes we need to remind ourselves that yours is a nation of pioneers, people who said, "Yeah, I'll try my luck in a new land that we've only just discovered," in which case I'd cut them a little slack. But just like my old Nan used to say when it comes to manners, "You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar." 😁
Every airline has its own rules about cabin bags but the smallest restrictions I’ve seen is a bag size of 40x25x20cm. So if you get a bag that size you’re pretty much guaranteed for it to be allowed.
My company in the city of London. Made 41 people redundant, I survived, but agreed to meet for their leaving drink at lunchtime. Ended up 50 in this pub when one guy pointed out he still had his company credit card. 4 hours later 56 bottles of champagne, plus plenty of beers and 28 bottles of wine later, the bar ran out. That was a great laugh until next day when those that survived had to go back to work 😄 😚😔. I do miss the nineties work ethic. Lol
Hi KB.Theres an hilarious clip of Jack Whitehall on Graham Norton with Johnny Depp & Jennifer Lawrence that has her in tears with a very smutty story, just the sort of thing U like.Theres a short clip just relating to that story or the full show 45 mins.Hope you're not about to eat anything if U decide to watch it.
Ah Paros … First visited that island when backpacking when I was 18. An amazing island, great connections to other islands.
Last time I went to a phone shop it took ages to get served, and then i couldn't actually buy one, i could only order one. So i went home, ordered one from Amazon and it arrived next day.
We have a similar carry-on system in the UK it's pretty standard in Europe if you look around the airport you can find the little checking frames scattered around allowing you to check if it fits your self before check in avoiding this problem and larger airports usually have a luggage store where you can buy carry-on bags perfectly sized to fit.

Why go in summer?
I used to work in Grand Rapid, Michigan one week a month in the 2000s. First time a colleague said 'do you want to go and get a beer' I though he meant 'let's hit the pub for the night' but he really mean 1 beer! He drank it and and then stood up and said 'right, see you tomorrow!'

Jack Whitehall wrote and starred in Bad Education, very funny series based on real experiences of teachers in secondary schools.
Bad education is another funny as hell Jack Whitehall sitcom, very much has that inbetweeners vibe but extremely silly & more family friendly.
Just to add a bit of perspective - the majority of local political meetings (as in local branches of each party) take place in pubs
My lot used to leave whisky out for Father Christmas, mainly because they knew I’d be the one drinking it lol
Jack Whitehall is also an actor he's been in several comedy shows and does a travel show with his dad xx he's also in Disney's Jungle Cruise with Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson xx
You'd be surprised how far manners and politeness and courtesy can get you. Especially when dealing with cops.
I was never interested in Jack Whitehall's comedy until I watched 'Travels with my Father'. Since then I do find him quite amusing and love his perspective on boarding schools and upper class living.
Jack is one of my favourite comedians ☺️
Not seen this before, very funny😂😂😂👍🏽
He's not just a comedian, he's been in a few big movies too and has done voice over work.
I recon the whole of the UK could out drink the whole of the US 🤣
Love the Greece anecdote. And yeah,we've got bad apples too.Doesn't everyone?
In the UK airports, before check in, our hand luggage is checked first. If its 15kg were good to go check out. Saves time tbh.
In our cities people work until 5pm Friday and then binge drink until 4am Sunday. In our farmer towns people huff petrol (gas) from tractor tanks 4 days per week.
"In Glasgow, we don't GIVE a fuck." When waiters are paid a humane wage 🤣🤣 So glad I don't live in America as a server! I'm from Ireland, we'll still tip you but your rent or your baby's diapers don't depend on it. Edit: My BIL is from Buffalo and Tennessee (moved a bit back and forth), him and his whole family are the kind of Americans you absolutely LOVE having in your country. So happy and polite and excited to learn all they could! Even an cúpla focal. So, when you Americans come visit, remember we know you're not all stereotypes. Just... the ones who are, they're absolute cabáiste.
I can confirm drinking is similar in Britain and America (specifically the middle of nowhere in Wyoming), you get the same few guys who sit in the pub from 5pm til chucking out time every day to avoid their wives. Where it differs is underage drinking, if a 16 year old walked into a rural pub in England they get served no questions asked, anyone under 21 in the states isnt allowed to serve alcohol let alone drink it.
You should find the short clip of him on Graham Norton with Olivia Colman - she accidentally (perhaps) buries him.....
The Scottish cafe bit reminded me of Harry Enfields American tourist sketch
Been told that you can get hours of fun, searching news headlines from Florida typing random dates. Saw someone do it, I think he called it "Mean while in Florida".
I'm British and went to a restaurant in Eastern Europe where an American was moaning about the food and called in the (non-English speaking chef) He shouted at the chef "I do not get this at home". To my amusement, and saving the face of Americans abroad, another American stood up and banged his fist on the table, shouting "Sam, you are not at *%*^ing home, so either go home, or shut the *%*^ up!". Beautiful.
You should react to “gimme gimme gimme” it a British show from the 90s it’s hallarious! 😂😂
Instant response to the cafe joke American lady should have been "well you're not in Kansas anymore Dorothy so pay up if you want a refill"
