Ardal O'Hanlon created the Dougal character by trying to create a human who was like a pet dog, always happy, never sees bad, forgets everything and gets easily distracted

Ardal is lovely. My partner is a carer for adults with moderate to severe downs and autism and other people with IDs in a day recreation service. He had taken them into one of the local pubs for coffee etc and Ardal who is friends with the owner had stopped by to see him. My partner of course recognised him, (anyone here would lol) My guy said hello to him and he stopped and spent time chatting with all the lads who he probably couldn't understand but it didn't phase him at all, he was chatting away to my partner probably wondering how he can handle 5 adults with different intellectual disabilities and needs -it ain't no picnic but himself is really good at his job, probably one of the best they have down there and he doesn't even have the highest qualifications compared to the other staff but they know it. So Ardal was talking to him about it while fending off a hundred questions that he could barely understand which himself has to translate but he was really patient and friendly and then took a few pics with him and the lads as well. He's a genuinely lovely guy. He doesn't come from far from here and he came on the comedy scene around the same time as Tommy Tiernan and Dylan Moran who are comedians and actors too and both from THIS town where Ardal was visiting. 🇮🇪✌️

@@rc-dk6by I’ve noticed that King Boomer doesn’t laugh at jokes he doesn’t get. Which shows he’s not laughing on queue. I’ve seen American reactors that have laughed at a joke. That references some obscure British topical story from 20 years. And you know they don’t get it and are just laughing on queue for the camera. I think it says a lot that Boomer pauses the show. To finish laughing and talk about his thoughts on it. Even when he’s completely wrong.

Also, pausing is completely necessary to dodge copyright. The idea is that this is "fair use" for purposes of education ... You could argue that showing the entire show uninterrupted - and then commenting on its terrific editing, and acting and the methods used by the SFX and audio teams, amounts to education. But no. You're not allowed to do that - because people could stop just after the episode finished, and there would be no "educational" content SO - the compromise is that only short clips are allowed, followed by some commentary - to make sure you're not getting the entire show for free Failure to do this, especially with Channel 4 shows, means a copyright takedown or even a strike

'The Passion of St Tibulus' seems to be based a bit on the 1976 film 'Sebastian'. A lot of sunburnt Roman soldiers running about in the nip and speaking Latin. That kind of thing. By the way, the line: 'Down with this kind of thing' uttered by Ted and Dougal, is sometimes amusingly seen here in the UK on banners at demonstrations

background on Dougal's "Blockbusters" dream: Blockbusters was a 1980's game show for students (maybe 16 year olds or a bit younger?) hosted by Bob Holnes where you picked a letter in a hexagon from the board and the answer starts with that letter, leading to the meme "Can I have a P please, Bob". The implication is that Dougal is very smart in his dream or remembers stuff properly when asleep etc

Being from Ireland and having grown up watching Fr. Ted in the 90s, it was such a revolutionary comedy on the hypocrisy of the Catholic church, so controversial at the time when the Church was loosing its control in Ireland. Really well written and acting and timing is perfection. You have so many good episodes ahead with Fr. Ted as I think they got better as time went on. Enjoy and I look forward to seeing your reactions, it is so interesting to see how you perceive an Irish comedy and whether you get the subtle jokes. The reason why Father Ted is the best sitcom of all time, in my opinion, is that there is not one bad episode. And the reason for that is that there's always at least one moment of pure comedy magic; at least one moment that makes each episode as memorable as can be. I'm looking forward to you guys reacting to which moment thta may be per episode 😊

One of the things that made father Ted so well thought are the little Irish things brought to extreme like Mrs Doyle's insistence on people having tea. Her "go on, go on go on" is just a perfect example.

On the all-important issue of the squeaky chair... WD40 is a cleaner and water displacer (as in Water Displacement formula 40). I know it says it's a lubricant on the tin, and it's true in a short-term kiind-of way, but in for something like this it basically cleans away what was left of the last lubrication. For general purpose lubrication (e.g. non-squeaky chairs and door hinges) you probably want 3-in-1 oil. And to complete what I know about oils, Deoxit D5 is great for cleaning electrical connectors and de-crackling volume controls.

His father was the Speaker of the Lower House (Ceann Comhairle) as well as the Irish Attorney-General at one point. O’Hanlon went to one of the most prestigious private schools in Ireland, Blackrock College, Alma mater of Eamon De Valera, Bob Geldof and numerous others.
