I've been watching the game for 60 years and I still go: OMG! It is a spectacular sport.
This was Australia's best kept secret. These are 'Supreme Athletes' it's in their DNA! The Best In the World! Yes there is a women's league too. Cheers👍

It's in all Australians DNA just need too unlock it
When you get the ride on someone's shoulders it feels weightless and time slows down . Its an incredible sensation. For that millisecond you feel like a GOD ( Gary Ablett snr to be precise) .
Invented in 1860..the oldest football game. these high markers are super fit freaky athletes not all players can do this.
a mark is paid by the umpire when it's determined to be 'controlled for a sufficient time'... generally they're more leanient with speccys (spectacular marks, where they jump on each other) so as long as you catch it and hold it for a second, even if it spills out on the way down it will be paid. however the catch has to be off of a kick (not a handball) that travels 15m and doesn't hit the ground or get touched by another player. yeah one thing about australian football is a lot of the rules are subject to interpretation so it's a really hard game to umpire and we get a lot of controversies when it comes to that
There is an American league, the USAFL, which has 50 teams.
That last one was done by a player thats only 5" 8' tall , Garry Morcroft . People think the players being jumped on must get hurt , but most of the time its just humiliation .
What can I say, it's the land of the kangaroos, we HAVE to have mad hops!!!
It is the judgement of the ball in flight which is amazing the player has to time his jump exactly at the right time to pull it off
A somewhat new sport. Started in the mid 19th century, current league is in its 128th season. I'm hoping it will stick around for a little while longer.
Some of these marks are even more impressive because they occur very close to the boundary, and the player manages to keep the ball inside the boundary while marking
I played Aussie rules, but I was the guy that others got a lift from. The instinctive reaction when I felt someone on my shoulder was to resist the force. Naturally this aided the flyer opposition.😢
I've played most of my childhood and rarely saw a speckie, but god is it hard to execute, we do them during training just incase but they are amazing to witness IRL
the feeling is like hitting the perfect timing. same as a clutch shot in basketball. feels good af
Very old sport 👍
Glad your enjoying our game bro, it's been around for 150+ years

Underrated sport bro 💯💯
Australian football has been around longer than American football
As a player doing this is the best feeling flying through the air jumping on top of someone your teammates hyping you up the best feeling.
I like you bro. You seem to get it. For God's sake don't start watching AFL hits videos. That isn't what the game is about. The season has just kicked off. Get into it.

😱😱
Just so everyone can understand the sense of scale, most players are over 180 cm/6 feet tall with an average of about 185-190cm /6'3-4" and there are these players jumping on their shoulders. Its one thing to watch videos of them but insane to see live
It feels amazing
Very hard to play in USA due to size of ground but it is played there under USAAFL which has a team in most major cities.

This is the oldest codified football game in the world, it was codified in 1856/8 by a group of cricketers ,another book there , I'm a CARLTON BLUES FAN , 1864 , a full 7 years before the FA CUP IN SOCCOR , and it's the best game on earth , GO BLUES RARARA
Many teams in the USAFL
Love the AFL content mate
Aussie rules is the oldest codified sport in the world, Codified in 1850's as a way to keep Australian cricket players fit through Winter ! I still play afl but in a wheelchair don't take marks quite as spectacular Now ! It's a ball's and all game without padding.

If the umpire thinks you marked the ball for certain amount of time then dropped you can still be given the free kick for the mark..some umpires make wrong decisions sometimes. You can't video review a mark becouse AFL don't want to be like other games that hold up play...
AFL(Australian Rules Football) or under its previous name of VFL( Victorian Rules Football) actually had a formally agreed upon set of written and official rules of the game, established teams and organised seasonal competition long before the American NFL was ever established or it's rules of the game formally codified. As the AFL/VFL game was originally envisaged as an activity to keep the professional and serious amateur cricketers active and fit during the off-season the game was initially encouraged by the cricketing associations for their members and players, and was played on the many cricket grounds that were mostly vacant during the winter or off-season. So the club structure with playing fields, grounds, social and sporting facilities were already mostly in place and available. Even today the most famous AFL ground is the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) where Cricket matches including domestic, State and International ones of all three forms of Cricket (Test 3day or 5day, One Dayers or fifty overs, twenty-twenty) are still played in season.
This sport was created in 1857
Hold on........wasn't Goddard's (from the 2010 Granny) in there twice?
It's needs to be shown more to society! Lolz! Love it bro. Come down I'll take you to a game.

AFL flying Ryan mark of the year
The players practise the jumps. I was at my gym and a local amateur player was practising his jumps from a standing position. He kept adding platforms, one on top of the other, going higher and higher --sooo high. His movement was if he was floating up. I watched in awe ! The game was partly inspired by a game the Australian indigenous people played, possibly for thousands of years with a stuffed animal skin. I spoke with a descendant of Tom Wills who was a co-creator of the game. He told me that his ancestor, Tom Wills' uncle, had a farm/station where the indigenous people played the game near Ararat in Victoria, the origin state. Tom Wills watched their game. There is a monument about that there.
The game has been around for 150 years
Spread the sport ,mate.

The sport was officially codified in the 1850s. It is loosely based on a sport that Indigenous people played, called Marngrook, but this version was started to keep cricket players fit in the winter. Women do play professionally in the AFLW league, which was formed in 2017, but they have been playing at amateur level for a long time. Before women’s teams were created, most girls used to just play with the boys until they were about 14yo, then they had to stop. In terms of dropping the ball after a mark, it’s ok if you drop it (sometimes that’s inevitable), you will still be awarded a mark as long as you have had control of the ball. The 2024 season is about to kick off here! See if you can watch a game!!!
You don’t mean to do it
