In theory, a game lasts for 4 quarters, each lasting 20 minutes... BUT... In each quarter, if an umpire stops the game for certain reasons, extra time is added to the end of the quarter. Mostly this will add between 5 to 10 minutes, but I've known a quarter to last 45 minutes... (someone had to be removed from the ground on a stretcher) The most common reasons for adding time on, include: scoring a goal or someone actively bleeding, so he must leave the field. Most free kicks for fouls will add a little bit. So a match is tentatively scheduled to take upto 3 hours.
@ExploringTheSmoke

@@EarlJohn61 thank you Earl! I was curious as to whether extra time was added for fouls and injury, appreciate the information 💪🏻
Yep, in Victoria, the state where the Grand final is played, they have a public holiday so that the players from both teams can participate in a parade through the city (Melbourne), this is held on the day before the game. On ANZAC day, 25th April they hold the round of games all through the week. The ANZAC day game, now always held between Collingwood and Essendon football clubs held a crowd of 93,000 people to a drawn game (85 points each) Teams get 4 points for a win, 2 points each for a draw and 0 points for a loss The team currently on top of the ladder is Geelong with 6 wins, 0 losses. The bottom team is North Melbourne with 0 wins, 6 losses. Nicknames for clubs is a story in itself.

@@ExploringTheSmoke Even though the fans aren't violent (well at least nothing like in some European sports/leagues) We are still passionate, last year I attended a Preliminary Final: Collingwood (my team) vs GWS Giants, There were 98 000~ fans and about 96 000 of those fans were Collingwood, we won by 1 point and the Stands were shaking, the noise was deafening and it was glorious, I couldn't even hear the person next to me and they were shouting as loud as the could. I know we don't have the chants and whatnot like other sports, but we still love our sport.
The reference to the aboriginal/indigenous/first nations people is that the idea of the game came from the game they played called 'marn grook'. That was not a hakka (from New Zealand) that you saw. It was an Australian indigenous tribal war dance. The indigenous players are well-represented in Aussie Rules footy due to their excellent physical skills. What gives the game extra interest is the shape of the ball as it bounces randomly and players have to be on high alert as to the direction it will go. Two other introductions to the game are, 'What Is AFL?' and 'A Beginners Guide to Australian Rules Football'.

@@ExploringTheSmoke I just realised that you may not know the difference between Australian and New Zealand first nations people. They are not the same. They do not have the same cultures/cultural heritage.. The indigenous Australians are the oldest living culture on this planet. They have existed for millions of years. They are the remnant peoples from ancient Lemuria, now mostly under water.. The New Zealand Maori /indigenous race is thousands of years old. They are a Polynesian race. The land of NZ is relatively new, being built up through volcanic activity. So you cannot compare the hakka of NZ to the dances of Australian first nations.

You actually need to watch a full game. 4 quarters of 20 minutes each with extra time for stoppages. We have a special day called Anzac Day on April 25th each year. It is to remember all our fallen soldiers (Anzacs) and our current serving members. It starts with a tribute with the last post played by a serving member and the National Anthem sung by a serving member. The best game to watch is Collingwood v Essendon at MCG. This year (2024) it was watched by 93,600 in the crowd and ended in a draw. Not one person left early.

Nice reaction, mate. 👍 Australian Rules was created in the 1850s, so the history of the game has some deep roots. The Melbourne Demons, for example, was founded in 1858 and is supposed to be the oldest professional football club of any code on Earth. Another bit of history: Vice has a fantastic vid about the rivalry between Collingwood v Carlton on KZread you might like to react to. It’s a fun look at the game from an American POV and really shows the passion for the game. There are a couple of official AFL vids that give a bit better explanation of the rules than the one you reacted to. As for your question about what occurs after a catch (called a ‘mark’) from a kick that’s travelled at least 15m, the player is entitled to stop and take an unimpeded kick from the spot he took the mark (basically a free kick). OR he can choose to ‘play on’ if it’s to his team’s advantage to keep the ball moving, BUT he then loses the immunity from being tackled. There's also a whole bunch of best marks videos which show those leaps onto other players' shoulders out there you might like to check out. There's plenty of big hit vids too. Cheers!

Not quite correct. It doesn't just depend on who Collingwood are playing but also where and when they are playing. Many very fickle Collingwood supporters don't go to games at Marvel Stadium, so Collingwood crowds are between 30 and 95 thousand. The ANZAC Day game may bring in 95,000 but not a standard round game, even against the Bombers, Tigers or Blues. I'm not a Collingwood fan and I don't live in Melbourne but I have seen Collingwood play at the MCG three times with a crowd of 50- 65,000 and once at Marvel (Docklands at the time) against Fremantle with a crowd just over 30,000.

You'll enjoy the history of the game and how the clubs evolved over time. I'm a Dockers fan. The Fremantle Dockers were formed from the local grass roots clubs East and South Fremantle within the beautiful colonial era port City Fremantle. Should you ever visit Perth and more specifically Fremantle you will like most go to the old Fremantle Markets. Few know right across the road is the South Fremantle football club and standing there with it's back to the markets is one of the most glorious old timber footy grandstands in Australia. She's a beauty with that raw timber grandstand smell it instantly awakens your childhood memories. Gerard Nesham was the clubs first coach and he set two priorities. First was to keep it a family grass roots club and second to establish and fund a scholarship programme for remote community Aboriginal kids based at Clontarf. They haven't won a Premiership yet but when they do this very loyal and passionate fan base will party, seriously party. It's a great game.

Richmond Tigers has always been my go-to team. Family tradition. My dad's cousin was captain of Richmond back in the early 70s. Good ol #3, Roger Dean. Some teams make it to the top of the ladder often... some teams will leave you consistently disappointed (I'm looking at you, St Kilda) while others you'll love to hate (like Collingwood). There's a saying that you can always tell a Collingwood supporter by the number of teeth they are missing. Carlton (the Blues) have a huge following. It doesn't really matter who you choose to follow since most of the games are action-packed even if one side is getting thrashed. To answer your question about taking a mark (a catch). You can either take an unimpeded kick or you can choose to play on and kick running. Usually most players will try and play on because they want to move the ball from one end to another as quickly as possible. Hence why someone usually stands still where they have marked it so they can’t just keep running

When a player catches a ball (a mark) that has been kicked more than 15 metres he has 2 options to choose from. He can stop, and within a time limit, kick the ball again (not unlike a free kick) or he can instantly move the ball forward by hand-ball, kicking, or running with the ball (bouncing it every 15M).

Don't be fooled by the similarities to Gaelic Football. A lot of people see the latter and assume Australian Football is derived from it, but the first rules of Australian Football were written 26 years before the Irish game, and the rules which make them look similar were all in the Australian game before the Irish game started and none of those rules were in the start of Irish football. This game requires more different athletic skills than any other sport anywhere and consequently produces plenty of unique players the like of which you will never see again due tho their particular mix of skills. You really picked that up very well . One of the best reactions I have seen on a game you havent seen before. It was codified in 1858 , and is growing world wide from Europe , US, Japan, Canada , even India, but at amature level. Its fast ,high endurance , high skill levels and tough . Play is continuous with only a small break after each goal and at 1/4 and 1/2 time . After a mark you can play on or you can stop and take your kick. there are a lot of videos you could react to , like the Mason Cox story about an American that made it to the highest level , Don't believe in never . Or the best marks of the year , Biggest tackles or individual players like Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli, Garry Ablett Snr and Jnr. Its a marvelous game to watch and the final result can sometimes come down to a kick after the siren to win it.

It's in Western Australia..that bloody massive state on the left of the Australian map lol...that will fit at least 10 UKs into it. Our colours in this era are Purple & White 👍 The team everyone loves to hate is Collingwood. Look up 'What is AFL' for a different AFL explanation. Plus theres an updated version that covers the sheilas(womens) foray into the game. In none of the videos, do they explain when they say you have to bounce it every 15 m, that you have to bounce it Within - or up to 15 m, while running. Great reaction! For me, run tackles are one of the most exciting parts of our game. It happens more often then the Speckie and gets me up out of my chair every time. There are two official AFL made videos that i recommend you AVOID. Not because they aren't instructional. But because this video has already given you a better explaination then either of those other two - One of them (the older one) was aimed squarely at an American audience and it not only gets some things flat out wrong (nice one AFL - not much consultation on that one ay) but it leaves many American reactors even more confused then when they started. The other one is much like the one you've watched but the commentary makes it sound like AFL for children. Unfortunately you wont find an in depth video on the entire rule set. Im a Freo fan and like all Freo fans i also have delusions of granduer - we currently have a team capable of going all the way but seem to be lacking consitancy - consistently (oh the irony.) And while we are 'young' we have 0 flags from THIRTY. YEARS. West Coast Eagles are only 7 years older and have 4 flags - something these north of the river land rats are all to happy to remind us at any given moment (Including my missus) Unlike the Weagles however - we wear our losses like proud battle scars and arent the cry baby sore losers that they are XD (But seriously, they don't handle losing very well.) Look forward to some more AFL reactions.

😂😂 I'm glad you saw the funny side...some have not hahah
When a player marks the ball they have essentially three options: they can an unimpeded kick with an opposition player standing on the spot the mark was taken, they can dispose of it quickly to continue the flow of play (typically it's a handball to a teammate running past), or run off and continue the flow of play themselves. The last one used to have a bit of leeway in terms of how much sideways movement you are allowed before the umpire calls play on, but they've tightened that up so that the player with the ball has to remain in line with the opposition standing the mark, facing the ball carrier, who is essentially facing the direction of the goals, or the umpires immediately call play on. Another thing to note about this video: the average player unfortunately doesn't really kick 100 goals a season anymore. It's typically forwards (full-forwards mostly) who used to kick the most goals. It was a regular occurrence in the 1990s, but it died down after that. In saying that, someone in an amateur game on the weekend kicked 22 goals in a game, with their team won by 340 points. Lol. Scoring is fairly simple once you get the idea of it. A goal is worth 6 points, and it can't be touched by any other player once it's been kicked on its way to the goals. It's the only code of football that has that ruling for goals. If it is touched and goes over the goal line, it'll be marked as a behind (1 point). A scorecard can be 15.10 100 (15 goals x 6, 10 x 1 behinds). That's how it's tallied.

Nice one mate. For the scores you usually see 3 numbers for each team: goals, behinds and total score. So 20, 10, 130 means 20 goals worth 6 points and 10 behinds worth one point t for a total score of 130. Also at the end you asked about what happens after a mark. Do they play a set kick or keep running. The answer is both. The defending team has one player stand on the place where the mark was taken. The rest of the players can’t interfere in any way. If the player who took the mark walks back from the mark and kicks the ball, open play continues after the kick. If the player who took the mark starts running forward or after dropping back to play a set kick starts to move sideways or shapes to handball then the ump calls play on. If the player takes more than ten seconds to dispose of the ball after a mark in normal play (not a kick at goal with the mark taken inside the forward 50m arc which gets 30 seconds) then the umpire will call play on too.

People will mislead you about AFL. People will tell you to watch the AFL fights/hard hit videos etc. This is the past and no longer part of our game due to concussion litigation. What you need to know is that is it's a game of fast paced skill, played by players who demonstrate enormous athletic abilities, it's a that the game is 360 degree, rather than opponent facing off against each other and it's generally high scoring and exciting. As far as players go there are both men's and women's professional competitions and player height is not a factor. I'm a Port Adelaide supporter and I hate any other team that we are playing. Unlike soccer fans around the world, fans are not segregated and fan violence is non-existent. Crowd numbers average around 35,000 spectators, with bigger games commanding up to 90,000. Round one of this season, which had nine games had approximately 450,000 seated spectators...

Over the years there have been changes mainly the fact that we have teams now from all the States on the mainland whereas back in the day all teams were from Victoria only. The Footscray team name was changed to The Western Bulldogs I still follow them today in fact they are playing on TV as I type this. Typical Victorian! NOT all teams were from Victoria "back in the day". Each state had it's own league - eg. SANFL for South Australia and the WAFL (commenced 1885) for Western Australia. The Victorian teams always poached the best players from other states to play in the VFL. I used to love watching the State of Origin games which sadly are not played any more. PS: Go the Dockers.

Collingwood supporters don't like to be reminded that if it wasn't for Carlton, they would still be an amateur football club called the Britannia Football Club. Great reaction mate. Lots of sports in one, but we came first. Aussie rules was codified in 1859 before, soccer, rugby, NFL, basketball etc. How would you like to play it yourself? It's played as an amateur sport in many countries of the world including England, various European countries, also Asian countries and America which has the USAFL been going for 25 years. Search for Aussie rules in your area. Because it's amateur, it's nowhere near as brutal as our game and is more a social game with beers and barbecue's afterwards. I'm sure they would love you to play. When a player takes a mark, (catch) they have two choices. They can stop on the spot and take a free kick where no one is allowed to interfere with them. Alternatively they can keep running on after marking the ball. Either way the umpire always blows the whistle when a mark is taken. These guys are superfit athletes whose bodies are tough and conditioned to withstand the hard hits for 30 minute quarters, a total of two hours playing time. Some of them run up to 15 k's per game. There is a video about AFL hardest hits. Most of them are outlawed today. If you crash someone in their head you get X amount of weeks suspension. Another great video equal or better than this one is, "What is AFL, Aussie rules explained." The latest video from the AFL is, "A beginners guide to Australian rules football." This talks about the AFLW, women's league as well. You mentioned scoring. A scoreline of 18-10-118 means 18 goals x 6 points each = 108 pts + 10 behinds, (pts) = a total of 118 pts. Highest total points wins. Penalties/rules are too many to talk about here. You can search online for books/videos on the rules of AFL. What we love is that there is no segregation of supporters, and that 100,000 people at a grand final is a "madly electric atmosphere" having families with kids screaming their heads off, (mainly at the umpire) but it's all one big happy family. Except for the odd idiot, there is not the bad behaviour seen in some overseas sports. AFL gets higher weekly attendances than any sport in the world per capita, but also ranked fourth highest attendances in the world, regardless of population. (Roughly equal with the English Premier soccer league) Another video that will freak you out is the AFL high marks, (catches) I believe games are telecast on a fox soccer channel over there. I think (at odd hours though) pretty easy to search for. I hope you follow the red and white Sydney Swans, they fight out games to the end, and never give up. Nearly always make the finals. Very much a community orientated club doing a lot of charity work for kids in hospitals etc. Collingwood is only popular with Collingwood supporters. Fremantle are hot and cold. Western Australian team not highly regarded except in Western Australia. Welcome to the greatest game on the planet my friend. Cheers. 🇦🇺🦘🦢🦢🦢

The interchange is now 75 times a game, not 90. There is a 23rd player now, who is a substitute for a player who has an injury that does not allow them to continue in the game, particularly concussion and muscle injuries (though teams are misusing this for tactical reasons). The Grand Final is not a day off, as the game is on a Saturday afternoon. Starting last year, a 23rd minor round game was added. The indigenous dance is only performed once a year in the games in the specially designated Indigenous round of games, where special jumpers with indigenous motives are also used. As for the score, the 108 points you saw could be accrued as 16-12 (16 goals, so 16x6 (96 points) and 12 behinds (12 points)) = 108 points from 28 scores. Teams can score less than 30 points in a game but also over 200 depending on the weather and how well both teams play. Just as is the case with Rugby Union, a team consists of players with a wide range of heights and weights. Typically, AFL players range in height from 168cm to over 200cm and in weight from around 65kg to over 110kg. The AFL is a national competition that formed from the pervious VFL, which was only for teams from the state of Victoria. Currently, there are teams from five states (Victoria (10), South Australia (2), Western Australia (2), Queensland (2) and New South Wales (2)). In a few years, a team from Tasmania will enter the competition and an odd numbers of teams will mean that there will be one team each week that doesn't play. Currently, the competition runs from March to September and most of the pre season training is done in the heat of summer. There are fewer grounds used now and players don't have to put up with the mud heaps that dominated the winters on smaller suburban grounds that was the case in the previous century. The AFL has adopted a number of aspects from sports in the USA, particularly the player draft, transfers involving player exchange and draft picks rather than transfer fees and team salary caps. His final comment also isn't quite correct, I think. Sport at the purest level and simplest is running. PS Keep blowing bubbles and the Hammers may yet finisher higher in the Premier League than their third place in the old First Division in 1986.

My mother is a Manchester lass and my brother and I were born on a Saturday, a few hours before United beat Newcastle by five goals. That's because he took his time and also has experience being a foreigner learning the game. If I was to explain the game, I'd probably do a poor job since I grew up on the game haha. Rugby League on the other hand I could teach that as I learned that only a few years ago.

@@SilentHotdog28 hahah sometimes it can go VERY wrong haha
When it comes to the scoreboard, this can be very confusing to someone nust learning the game. There are three sets of number for each team on the scoreboard, the first is the number of Goals scored and are worth 6 points for each Goal; the second is the number of Behinds scored and are worth 1 point for each Behind, the third is the Total number of Points scored and is the resulting points for Goals scored and added to the Behinds score. A score may look like this 20 10 130

Collingwood. You need to barrack for the mighty Collingwood Magpies. Supporters who don’t barrack for Collingwood absolutely hate us! For me, that’s the best part, as long as we’re winning that is. 😅

every team has their own original club song, the game was invented to play on a cricket oval on the off season. if the ball hits the 2 outside post it's out of bounds and is thrown back in and if it hits on the full it's out of bounds on the full which is a hand over free kick, the officials are called umpires not referees. their are 4 on field umpires 2 side line umpires and 2 goal umpires. the game is ment to keep going and players are penalised if the deliberately stop the play, you can slap the ball forward to your advantage but you cannot scoop the ball. if running with the ball you must bounce or touch the ball on the ground every 15 meters, you cannot trip players. when a mark is taken the opposition player can stand on the mark and is penalised 50 meters if he steps over the mark or if an opposition player runs between the man on the mark and the player with the ball. 50 meter penalty if you mouth off at the umpire, time stops when the ball goes out of bounds or when a goal or point is scored or when the umpire calls time off. hope this helps

One thing not said about the size of our ovals is the reason they're so big is because the sport traditionally is played on cricket fields. When it comes to the AFL for example a large amount of the teams are still playing at grounds that you'll see the Australian cricket team playing on during summer.

@@ExploringTheSmoke I love Rugby League, but I barely watch any Soccer since you don't see that many goals. I don't want to go to a 0-0 game lol. In saying that, I've been to 2 matches of A-League, both times with my best mate, my team vs his, one game was 2-2 and the other (The Grand Final) my team won 2-0 and those games (especially the Grand Final) were entertaining.
@ExploringTheSmoke about the Football (Footy) Codes all of Australian Rules Football, Rugby League Football, Rugby Union Football & finally Soccer (Football), which are, For those who DISLIKE &/or HATE any Football (Footy) Code/s with a real passion would &/or will say these, (1 One) Australian Rules Football, is referred as Aerial Ping Pong Football, (2 Two) Rugby League Football, is referred as Thugby League Football, (3 Three) Rugby Union Football, is referred as Thugby Union, &/or Rugby Yawnnion, (4 Four) Football (Soccer), is referred as Wog Ball and also both Fairies &/or Queenies Game. (NOTE) Aerial Ping-Pong A jocular (and frequently derisive) name for Australian Rules Football (or Aussie Rules as it is popularly called). The term derives from the fact that the play in this game is characterised by frequent exchanges of long and high kicks. The term is used largely by people from States both of Queensland & New South Wales in which Rugby League Football and NOT Aussie Rules (Footy) Football as &/or is the major football code. This interstate and code rivalry is often found in evidence for the term, including the early evidence from the 1940s. 1947 West Australian (Perth) 22 April: In 1941 he enlisted in the A.I.F. and joined a unit which fostered rugby football. Renfrey did not join in the &oq;mud bath&cq; and did not play 'aerial ping-pong', as the rugby exponents in the army termed the Australian game, until 1946. 1973 J. Dunn, How to Play Football: Sydneysiders like to call Australian Rules 'Aerial Ping-Pong'. But on the other hand, for those and including myself who actually do LIKE &/or LOVE any Football (Footy) Code/s with a real passion would &/or will say these, which are, (1 One) Australian Rules Football, is referred as the real Australian Football (Footy) Code of Australia, (2 Two) Rugby League Football, is referred as the Greatest Game of All, (3 Three) Rugby Union Football, is referred the Game that they do Play in Heaven, (4 Four) Football (Soccer), is referred as the Beautiful Game & the World Game & also the Real Football Code of course.

There is other videos out there about AFL like " What is AFL.", through the actual AFL channel, that one is the best to look at. Other stuff like greatest marks, individual players,etc... As for the game total score. Goals are 6 points, behind/ other scoring is 1 point, so how many goals and times it by 6, then add the behind points equals the total. No they don't have say 100 scores for 100 points. So you have the goals 1st( times this by 6), behinds, then the overall total shown.

Still....106 is still like 18 goals which is a VERY high amount in other sports....as to the best of my knowledge haha I love this sport already though and I am here for it! Thank you for watching Katherine, glad you enjoyed
If you want to be a dockers fan. coincidentally the Wester Derby (Docker vs Eagles) is this weekend. I'm an eagles personally. Great rivalry between to 2 clubs. Dockers are far superior to at the moment unfortunately. But it is always one of the rougher and most entertaining games of the season. especially if you are a west Aussie. Would Be a grate way to introduce yourself to the sport straight away. Especially if you are looking to be a dockers fan. Hopefully we (Eagles) can put up a good fight and make a game out of it. But come support the eagles not the dockers the come back is brewing. edit: footy umpire here, it's just a mark not a paid mark like he said, with scoring if it hits the little post it is a throw in (umpire throws the ball into a ruck tap, similar to a ball up). If the ball hits the little post on the full from a kick without touching anything else first it is called out on the full and is a kick in for the opposition, with no score for hitting the little posts ever. the scores being so high is because a goal is 6 points and a behind is only worth 1. If you want a more detailed and in depth breakdown you should go check out one the AFL's rule brake down. it gives the basics so you are able to watch the sport and understand what going on.

Im not a 'sports fan' by any stretch of the imagination, but easily one of the best ways to spend an arvo is to go to an AFL game with your family or mates. The vibe is better than Soccer, Cricket, Basketball, the fans put in as much energy as the players it feels like. feels good man. Probably the most intense game Ive seen was not in the national league, but the state Semi-final, between to traditionally rival teams. possibly your last game of the season, so it was No-Holds-Barred, all out war. Its an inherently rough game, but there is a level of respect to the conflict. Not at this game. no media or live replay at this match. punch ups and tussles, gameplay was stopped 3 times for the ambulance dudes. It was an unholy blend of ballet and fight club.
