The player at 7:35 is Jeremy Howe. He is a specie machine. Almost a weekly occurance from him. You wont be disappointed checking out highlights of his marks

Suggest Adelaide in April/May (to be announced) for "Gather Round" all 18 teams in the same place at the same time. All fans in the same place at the same time.

Watching them on TV or even up in the stadium..it’s hard to get a scale of these guys, they are athletic monsters. During your trip you need to wander down to ground level and watch the players warm up/play standing next to the barrier, it’s unreal

it’s still nothing compared to seeing them out of football, Tom Hawkins is an actual building, I pulled my neck looking up at him when I realised who it was as he walked past lol

Kabir, if you do visit, I hope you enjoy your first AFL experience. But if you want to add context, travel to a country town and watch grass roots local football. This is where champions are bred and tested in the crucible. Country footy feeds the big leagues. Go watch the big men fly, mate 👍

There is something about the viscerality of the sound in a packed AFL stadium that doesn’t seem to have an equivalent elsewhere

Check out the best goals as well. Some of them are more impressive than the speckies imo. The AFL has a video series called “best of the decade” (2010-2019), which showcase quite a variety of different aspects of the game. Should give you some good insight.

I’ve been watching this game all my life and I love the spectacular marks. But when watch all the contenders for mark of the year, it’s difficult to tell which will win because all the nominations are awesome. Best game in the world. The combination of frequent scoring, unique skills, athleticism and endurance is second to none. The grounds are huge because they are cricket grounds. No other game comes close.

Now is the time to start watching some games - or at least highlights - we are halfway through the season so you should see the best footy of the year as teams are trying to make the finals (get into the top 8) and at the moment there are only 3 wins separating 4th and 15th.

AFL was originally called VFL until 1990 as all the teams were originally from the state of Victoria. I believe it's origins arose from Irish Gaelic football and if you search KZread for some Gaelic football videos you will see it is a very similar game but played with a round soccer sized ball.

  • @InfinitePlain

Two non Victorian teams played in the VFL. West Coast a d Brisbane Bears and guy could throw Sydney in as well. AFL is a governing body, not the spurt itself, which has zero to do with Gaelic football.

Only ever get a real "speckie" every now and then. A "mark" happens oodles of times a game as it is defined as a catch, from a kick, that has travelled more than 15m over the ground, and not touched by another player.

I think the first one is the best mark in VFL/AFL history. Honourable mention to Jonathan Brown, though. That took courage. How often do these marks occur? Given these were the marks of the year, once a season, by definition. But you will normally see several overhead and pack marks in a game and maybe one or two "speckies" (spectacular, flying marks) if you are lucky.

Check out some great goal compilations, they are worth a watch. Some huge kicks and amazing angles. There are kicks that "banana" / bend, some grubber it into goal, and others kick huge distances to get it in.
