One encounter with the Celtic Harp. This is just the kinda thing musicians encounter, I was the sound guy on a concert in a Church, (St Marys in Swansea. Around 1998) There was a very talented Harpist playing a small, what she called a Celtic Harp. As a Classical guitarist, I was intrigued, so she played a few tunes, and explained where they came from and so on. Anyway, the band I was recording did their bit, recording stopped, So I went to see the pretty lady playing the Harp, (As you would), tried to say Hello and such, as she was just sitting there. I started asking about her Harp and practice routines, as musicians do. She never answered, but played a tune, then her friends turned up, said goodbye all that stuff and explained, that she was deaf. How is it possible? To this day my fear is deafness.

The actual origins of the red dragon flag are that it is believed to have come from a Roman legion of which it was their standard. It was later adopted by Cadwallader. If King Arthur existed it is believed that a red dragon on a white background would have been the banner that he would have fought under against the Anglo Saxons.

It is also believed that King Arthurs Father (Uther Pendragon) saw a meteor in the sky which looked like a flaming dragon, who he then consulted Merlin and was told is a prophecy that he would become King of the Britons. Hence why the dragon figure stuck, but it was also helped that the Romano Britons used the Dragon standard.

Hello Alan. Despite being English, I have for some years now enjoyed watching the Welsh language channel on satellite TV when their national team are playing football. They play with such passion, which makes up for the population being less than my county of Yorkshire. You might want to see a video of the singing of the anthem before such a game, before the World Cup. I usually point out that Hilbert, from History With Hilbert, did a video against reactions which is funny. He is now studying Vikings, who took my part of Northumbria and replaced dragons with ravens. Another commenter now asks me how things are going in Danelaw after I recommended Hilbert's channel. The Union flag would look good with a yellow cross similar to the double cross of the Norwegian flag, in my opinion. Dragons do look good though, but my favourite was Idris from Ivory the Engine.

The reason I was always told why the Welsh/Wales is not represented on the Union flag is that Wales was a Principality whereas the other 3 are/were Kingdoms. The Cornish/Kernow flat is black with a white cross.

Ok, quick story on how a Welshman deals with an Englishman, totally random, in a pub, obviously. 1990 Used to go to a guitar tech thing, about 30 of us learning jazz and other stuff. Lotta of fun. We'd come up on the train/ bus, from Swansea to London. There was a great pub near too Victoria Station. So if the train and the timing was right, I could go to this pub with my guitar , on my way to the jazz school, get a quick pint in on the way, as it were. My focus was no *unt is gonna nick my Guitar and time, about 15 mins 'till the Bus comes.. etc. So, order my pint, an English guy standing at the bar notices my Welsh accent, and asks me about sheep, as they do, I say they are too young, and I can't catch them, or something like that, he laughs and the barmaid gives me my beer, kinda smiling. Then he asks me about the caves, how do we manage, so far underground. I calmy explain that the water that comes from the caves is so warm and clean we all walk naked, and as for power we have the little water-wheels that charge our lights and keeps the Television on. This guy is looking at me as if heaven had just entered his mind, offered to buy me a pint and hear more, but yup, bus turned up, off I went. The English eh?

Diolch (thanks) for doing this. The reason there is a Welsh community in Argentina is because of immigration back in 1875, due to a lack of work in the coal fields, which ws the largest employer. 600 people went over at the invitation of the Argentinian government. There was also an earlier influx of us Welsh into the USA and 2 towns there were originally Welsh settlements, Utica in New York and Scranton, Pennyslvania. Pennysylvania still has lots of Welsh names scattered around it, Bryn Mawr for example.

The mythology of Ireland is also interesting. The Celtic nations have some really cool characters and heroes/heroines. JRR Tolkein used some of them as inspiration for his characters and story-line of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Welsh gold is used in the wedding rings of all British royal brides. There is a link between theese gold rings and the dragons of Middle Earth...notably Smaug.

The welsh used to use a heraldic naming system abit like when someone is referred to junior. We get Tomos ap cydifor(tomos son of cydifor) And Tangwystl ferch cydifor (tangwystl daughter of cydifor) This was later banned and abolished by the english lords who defeated the last forms of resistance led by teulu men and women. This is he reason why owain glyndwr is named in such a way, following the naming style used by the englisj

This a yet again an English perspective on Wales. The flag in reality comes from the House of Bran in the south of the country. They in part descended from the Romans via The grand daughter of Caratacus and Linus, the first Bishop of Rome. Also from Magnus Maximus and Constantine the Great via St.Ellen.

I was taught that the ancient Britons always carried a flag with a red Dragon on it into battle but the Anglo-Saxons drove the Britons out of England or Anglo-land as they probably called it then? But the Britons ended up in the area we now call Wales and they still have their Red Dragon on the flag. A very simplified version of history because the whole history to my limited brain is long and complicated but Wiki explains it in detail if you are interested? The Welsh flag is by far the best flag I can think of. I live in New South Wales in Australia but sadly no Dragons on our flag but we do still have the UK Union Flag on our flag 🇦🇺🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

The Welsh Flag goes right back to the Romans in Wales. Look at something called 'The Roman Draco'. After the Romans left Wales, the welsh adopted the Draco as a symbol of power and battle. In fact the word "Welsh" is not something we ever called ourselves in the beginning. The words WALES/WELSH are names invaders gave us, meaning foreigner or Roman. We are The Cymry = The People. And Cymru = The land. If you want to go even further back than that, many historians believe the name came from the Cimmerians, from the 6th King of ancient Israel King Omri...Omri ummm sounds similar to Cymru? In Assyrian texts they referred to them as The Kumri....I could go on but this video helps explain what I'm talking about. (LINK BELOW) kzread.info/dash/bejne/fatsw9ZpaM6YZZc.html

The reason the Welsh flag wasn't incorporated into the Union flag, is that Wales was considered to be a principality of England, at that time. I like to imagine a small red dragon at the centre of the red cross. Unfortunately, due to being the same shade of red as the cross, it can't be seen.

@@kayew5492 More accurately it was a collection of kingdoms, with shared culture, language, identity and laws but usually separate rulers and dynasties controlling them. Wales was only unified under a single ruler a few times in its history due to the Welsh law of succession, in which lands and titles were always divided between heirs. Those who were powerful enough to rule over the majority of Wales tended to be referred to as King of the Britons rather than King of Wales. Although one or two were known as King of the Welsh.

You can’t incorporate the Welsh and Union flags at this point. They are both unique and they would be ruined in my opinion if any real attempt at merging them was to take place. Our flag is the coolest of all the British flags. It just is. The Isle of Man flag is unique too, but still Dragonless. Along with our language, the flag is the most obvious example of our national identity and represents that we are different and distinct. Keep things as they are I say. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

owen glendower was a twat !! He was very happy at one time , the English at the time allowed him to keep all his lands and power provided he keep the "locals" in check .. However He pissed off the Lords at the time and they then took his lands and titles... ONLY then did he rise up and start a revolt. Very recently there became a group called " the son's of Glendower " which caused a lot of problems. They would not or could not see that he was not a hero , but just pissed off because his perks had been taken away !

Actually, Owain Glyndwr was touted as the 'Mab darogan' ,(son of destiny,/prophecy) a long time before the uprising started - he was a reluctant leader - but for a while ran rings around the numerically superior English forces. He managed to regain Welsh independence for a few years ; crucially,he was *never betrayed* by his own people. He was as much a hero to them then as he is now. Hardly a 'Twat'.
