Its true, we were "braver" back in the 80's about danger, which means people werent wimpy but more accidents/deaths did occur due to this. There wasnt a "save people from themselves" attitude back then, if you went there and got hit by a car, you got hit by it and it was your own fault. These days, theyd sue, etc.

Rallies are mostly held in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Asia what you called instructions are pace notes letting the driver know what is coming up as in corners jumps etc and yes the spectators rely on the drivers for their safety also they will push cars back onto their wheels if they roll over there are plenty of rally videos on youtube.

Fun fact, the best female rally driver was behind the wheel of one of those monsters Michele Mouton finished 2nd in the 82 championship driving the famous Audi Quattro When group B were banned from Rally and were reconverted for other competitions (rally raid, hill climb...) she went at Pikes peak with Audi and a heavilly modified Quattro to set a new record on the track Bobby Unser, on of the local drivers, was pretty vocal about it about her win (in a bad way). Mouton responded to him "If you have the balls you can try to race me back down as well." (Unser won the next year with Audi) From now on, she's at the FIA involved in programs to promote women in motorsport (both in the cars and in the paddocks)

For me growing up in the 80s in Europe, it really was the golden age of racing. Rally group B was something I really loved and as you see by the amount of spectators risking their lives you can get an indication of how big this was. Though also Formula 1 in the 80s was amazing with drivers like Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and Nigel Mansel to name a few legends. The advancements in cars was huge than and so was the experiences not only in the driving but also in the sound the cars produced.

Yes, in Rally there is a driver and a co-driver. The co-driver's task is to read the notes about the course so that the driver is prepared for the next turns. Rally is always a race against the clock, but it happens that someone is overtaken by the next car.

In these cars you had three pedals (clutch, break, throttle) they're able to left foot brake thanks to the semi automatic gearbox (cuz you only need to clutch to actually launch the car) but before that when the cars were still manuals they needed to use a technique called heel & toe, basically the left foot was for the clutch and they were able to control both brakes and throttle by putting their right foot sideway, very impressive to watch.

I have a Lancia Delta S4. Road version, of course, but heavily (!?) modified. Cost me a lot of money, but she's still in near mint condition. I was also at the recent Rally NZ. For just the second time in my life. It was worth it. It was Group B that got me into motorsports in the first place.

Nice,nice car. One used to pass me in my lift to work, usually in midair and piloted by a well-known rally driver who shall remain anonymous. I believe he sold his Ferrari and bought it. Street Sleeper in battleship grey. Fabulous car, but typically for the manufacturer only available with the steering wheel on the wrong side...

Some races in America are held on public roads. Like in St. Petersburg Florida they hold the St. Pete Gran Prix every year. Basically Americanized Formula 1 cars racing on closed off city streets. I've never been personally, and probably never will now that I moved out of the Tampa area, but it is indeed a race for racecars held on a public road in America.

This was during a time in which something could be dangerous but still sanctioned. The drivers and fans knew the risks and they take that chance off of their own backs for the sake of watching or performing godlike maneuvers in cars that are harder to control than an F35

The rally sport was simply not used to the large number of spectators who suddenly turned up for Group B. People behaved completely crazy and this also contributed to the class being stopped.

This was in Europe, i heard from a guy in Portugal that was bragging by the Doctor that his finger stuck under Walter Röhrl's car. x.D In Europe Car Racing is like a Gladiator sport, be the best or die. :P

Rally is a motorsport in wich you race against the clock. That being said there are times that some cars catch up and overtake others on stage, as they are usually set to go with 1 minute in between them. On where they race, they do it on public roads closed to open traffic, so no cars other than the ones running the rally are driving when a stage is live. As from where this events take place, it's worldwide; not very popular in the US, but in Europe, Asia and Australia and NZ. Many countries have their own national and regional championships. Now talking on Group B, Group A..., it's not like "A" beats "B" and that stuff; it has nothing to do with that (indeed Group B rally cars were much more extreme and faster than Group A cars). These Group [letter/number] set of cars are cars abbiding by a set of rules or homologations, like NFL or NBA; different things. Group B came from a reform from the FIA alongside Group A, Group C and Group N (and later Group S). These "groups" were aimed to classify race cars by their nature; Group N and Group A (still relevant today, though rolling out) are cars based on actual mass production road cars, being Group A the class with cars more modified and Group N race cars less modified. Then there were Group B and C, that were the top classes, both for rally and road racing; these cars were actual prototypes with very few regulations and in case of Group C not even a need for a production vehicle to made of, just sheer race cars. Both this classes were eventually ruled out (Group B banned and Group C killed) alongside Group S (Group B's were to be substitute, banned alongside Group B). After Group B's ban Group A rally cars became the top class in rallying, eventually evolving into the former "WRC" WRC homologation. Last year was the last year of this redundant sounding WRC (WRC+) cars, this very year being the first of the Rally1 top class, wich is almost the same as WRC+ but with hybrid systems on this top class (the now new Rally2, Rally3, Rally4 and Rally5 cars are still not hybrid). On the 2 people on the car you are correct; you have the driver and his navigator; the codriver. The codriver's job is to take pace notes of the stages during "recce" if it takes place and guiding the driver reading the road ahead when running the stage live with said pace notes or those provided by the event organization in case it goes that way, and it's 10000% essential to run the stages at the speed they do, to the point that a badly pace note reading might "force" the driver into a big crash as many times they drive almost blind of what comes next on the stage.

Group B was the most dangerous almost unlimited class of rally " time trial races on closed public road stages " . If you're interested in Group B go and watch " Too fast to race " a doco about the world of Group B

It is based on time, and yes both rally groups A and B had 2 drivers. Main driver and co-driver (sometimes called the navigator) that reads pace notes to basically direct the main driver on where to go.

About the pedal using: Normally, in a stickshift, left foot is clutch and right foot is brake and throttle. However, to keep the turbo up they stayed on the throttle with the right foot, while using a heel/toe technique to shift. They turn their left foot at a sideways angle, toes on the brake while the heel presses the clutch at the same time. There´s good videos about that on youtube.

Yes, all on public, temporarily closed roads in rally even today. The co-driver gives the cues for next step at a rapid, shorthand code. They prepare by going through the road in advance, plus keep their notes to themselves...

I can remember watching a Groupe B rallye in which a car flew over a crest, went sideways into a tree... the car was literally cut in half and both the driver and navigator were killed. I believe that it was this accident, as well as the one described here that were the deathknell of Groupe B, as they happened in the same season of racing.

Also, this style of racing still exists, (just look up WRC 2022 on KZread search) just not with cars that dangerous, and with better safety precautions, so there is a MUCH LESS chance of fatality these days

Most of the crowd clips were filmed in Portugal/Sintra. Place were some years later a big crash killed people and it ended for safety reasons.

Group B wasn't just about power but also about the brutality of handling them, they were so difficult and dangerous to handle needing extremely skilled drivers. Remember, those days were only car vs driver, no computers, no nothing, just stick shift, clutch, and brutal power. The beauty of the rally, it lasted for days, many stages on different roads and climates, rain, snow, ice, gravel, asphalt, mud, crossing small rivers, jumps, fog, you name it. Walter Röhlr once said, he drove in a dense fog at a 100Km/h relying on the notes of his co-driver, his skill and instinct. Group B were simply Formula1 cars going full throttle in forests between trees, on dirt, on jumps, curves and most of all " between spectators " whom at times they were blocking the roads. So, just imagine.

I live in the French Alps, when I was young, 10/15 years old, the Monte Carlo rally passed through my town, there was group B, Walter Rohrl, Harry Vatanen, were our heroes, the show was crazy, especially the special stages in the snow and the night races. it was very dangerous but so beautiful!

Rally is nowadays called WRC Rally, World Rally Car. And WRC Rallies are driven everywhere, except in the US. The nearest is in Mexico. But of course more WRC Rallies are driven in Europe, the main market for Car Companies to sell their regular/normal cars. Rally has been driven in Finland since the early 60s. Current WRC World Champion is Kalle Rovanperä, 22 yrs old, Team Toyota. Toyota is also the World Champion Race Car, cause the manufactures are also competing, not only the Drivers.

This is mainly not in Australia. Our govt would never let spectators get that close. These clips are probably scandanavia, Southern Europe

Rallying is basically a European sport from the very beginning. The current series the WRC which has nowadays similar fast cars than the old Group B. Fun fact Porsche developed the Porsche 959 to be a Group B car, but was to late for the series as it closed down before the first start. The techonlogy went into the modern 4x4 Porsche.

hi, some of that footage was in Portugal, and unfortunatelly was in Portugal that started the end of the Group B when a major accident happend and several people died and got injured. Unfortunately for Americans they are 50 years behind the rest of the world when it comes to engine technology. They're transfixed with the same old V8 which is heavy and inefficient compared to european and Japanese cars. As you heard, a 5 cylinder 1.8 ltr engine produces over 450 hp. The same or more than a 8 cylinder 6.5 ltr V8. Plus, you'll never see an American car on a rally because they just don't like going around corners and they're heavy. You need a car that is small and nimble to throw around tight bends.

Most of the important new stuff in your new car was either invented in racing or perfected by racing years before hand.

It was in Portugal where most spectators were injuried and some died...

most cars in europe even now are manual so driving with both feet is a norm for that as they have( had) a third pedal(clutch) with normaly the left foot sits nearby for shifting and yes usually you lift the right foot of the gas and then break with it oeqving the left foot out of that but to keep the turbo spooling the instead left the right foot on the gas and breaked with the left whilst also shifting with the left foot at tge same time

Also yes there are two drivers because they don’t know what is coming up ahead, they are reliant on a Co-driver to read the pace notes.

Funny thing is, FIA planned another class called Group S. There was absolutely no regulation in that class with cars close to 1000 bhp. But they canceled that plan when Group B ended.

i will say something commonly overlooked in group b was the mg6r4 which was actually one of the safest cars in group b (there is a reason its allowed and still competes in rally cross to this day) the 6r4 was also completely naturally aspirated which means had group B lasted 1 more season its likely the 6r4 would have come out on top (the 6r4 was truly dialed in until after group b, you can tell by looking at a 6r4 that has been stored since group b vs one that still races today) is the 6r4 indestructible? no, not by any means, but the difference is, the boot lid, the bonnet and fenders, you can lose them and it only effects the aero, by that i mean the 6r4 is actually a lot smaller than it looks

The Bathurst race track is a public road because the people who wanted to build it thought it would be easier to get funding that way than if they admitted it was a race track. But it was still designed with racing in mind, and obviously they do close the road to normal traffic and put in safety barriers and stuff for the race.

The pikes peak rally is actually the wildest of rallying

Hi dude. Rally is time trial only on special stages. Groups A and B are just classifications with some different regulations in terms of power, weight and road legal counterparts produced. But the rules are the same. They no longer exist anymore and have been replaced by other catgories like WRC, WRC 2, WRC Junior. They stopped all that Group B craziness due to deaths of drivers and spectators. Some Audi and Peugeot cars went to Pikes Peak to destroy the competition on the following years. Nowadays, cars are safer, less powerful but the track are still insane and the global speed remains the same. There is always a driver and a co-driver. The co-driver is reading his pacenotes in a small notebook during the race, after a short recognition of the track that can only be done once, so the driver is discovering the track during the race. The stages are set on various countries. The most infamous are Tour de Corse (Corsica, France), Montecarlo, Milan San Remo, Sweden, Finland, Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Australia etc... They pick locations according to how terrible the "road" is. If its shallow, with a lots of turns, holes, bumps, with a lot of dirt and gravel, the location is picked 🤣 And some stages are set during night. Just to add some difficulty. Craziest motorsport of all time with the Tourist Trophy IMO You have Rallycross which is rally but on closed track between 6 overpowered cars.

Co-driver is in every rally. Group B, group A, WRC, R5, R2 thats just specifications of rally car.

@@CVTECK1 yes they because quattro drivers didn't let go gas while turning and braking. And the heel and toe technique while downshifting requires pressing all clutch, brake and gas with a great timing so not only quattro drivers but most of them used both their feet

back in the day lot used a manual box, heal and toe gas and brake left clutch. id never dream of buying an auto esp if want a fun car what ever size it is. i drive lots very tight twisty roads so a city cars great, just use low gears thrash the hell out of it as 2nd do 50mph and that feel over 100mph on a big road when you playing with inches from trees and walls. sadly i do not have a closed road so not many places you can push a lot, as room for one car so you must be able to stop going around a blind corner, but it loads fun up down gears hard on brakes to be slow before bad corner

@4:40 "This little thing?" That Audi Sport Quattro wasn't little. It was quite big and that became its problem in the long run. For example Peugeot 205 T16 and MG Metro 6R4 were much smaller.

1986 Olympus Rally last Groub B race.. and lancia Markku Alen And Peugeot Juha Kankkunen were racing on championship.. They give show.... and it was in U.S. .

The end of the video answers your 10:38 question: the only two instances where there were serious accidents were the ones that ended Group B. There was a considerable amount of severed fingers, though, because spectators liked to touch the cars as they were passing by.

the roads are public BUT they are closed from normal traffic. this still doesnt mean that someone anyhow could not accidentally get on that road with their tractor or car which happened in europe every year :D

That Audi Quattro was driven by Michelle Muton and co driver Faprizia Ponz and they almost came close winning the championship,but they were instrumental in giving Audi their first constructions championship.

It was a hoot seeing you react to this. A few points. Two drivers? One driver, one co-driver or navigator. The “instructions” are called pace notes. A Rally takes place over a long series of many “special stages”. Each stage might be driven only once or twice so unlike a regular race track, the driver can’t reasonably memorise all the details. Instead, they do a reconnaissance (recce) drive over the stages at normal (not racing) speed and the driver will dictate the pace notes to the co-driver regarding speed, tightness of the bend, undulations, jumps and more. Each driver has their own preferred shorthand codes with the level of detail according to preference. Occasionally there have been some BIG crashes when the co-driver has read the wrong pace note. 800kg is really light. Only 1764 lbs! For comparison a Honda Civic is around 3000 lbs. From memory there was a rule linking weight and engine size, so the cars were around 800-1000kg with smaller engined cars allowed to be lighter. The Audi quattro (small q is Audi’s choice) was the car that proved 4WD could be a performance car feature, thanks to its success in rallying. Later Group B cars like the Peugeot were little more than purpose-built rally cars draped in bodywork that resembled a road car (a bit like how NASCAR was before it was standardised) but the Audi was originally a genuine ordinary road car converted for rallying, which is why it didn’t have the favourable layout for weight etc. The Audi would have had rear seats (removed for competition of course ) where the Peugeot had its engine and gearbox. As the video said, this made the Audi much more difficult to drive. Group B also has what was probably the most successful female racing driver of all, Michele Mouton. She was genuinely up there with the men, winning several rallies and only missed out on becoming the World Champion because of the unreliability of the Audi. Yup, she drove what was arguably the most unwieldy and powerful rally monster of all time. She and Audi later took the car to the famous Pikes Peak hill climb and beat all the men to the top. To this day I don’t think there has been a female racing driver who has even got close to her achievements. BTW rally can take place on all kinds of surfaces. Tarmac, dirt, gravel, sand, snow and ice. All weathers. And not featured, also in the dark! Yup there are night stages where the front of the car could have 3-6 extra headlights mounted on the bonnet/hood. Nowadays I think they might use LED light bars instead.

I know this is an older video, but didn't see a answer to the time trial question. Traditional rally is strictly time trial, but mixed class rallies can cause some issue. There are also many modern subsidiaries of rally. Like rallycross, which is motocross but with rally cars.

There's an event in western Nebraska that's not specifically a race or rally held on public roads. But stage rally is almost exclusively done on public roads. Hell, pike's peak hillclimb competition. That's a public road. That's not even specifically rally.

The driver might know the road well, or he might not know it at all. Before any rally stage the drivers and co drivers drive the stage and can walk it if they want to and have time. The co driver takes pace notes in code that can be standard or his own. The co driver reads his notes to the driver before any corner telling him the chosen gear and whether slowish, mid speed or full throttle sideways..... normally the code itself tells the driver what he needs to know. Basically..... the driver trusts the co driver to be reading the right pace notes ( right page and right corner ) and not to kill him. The co driver trusts the driver not to kill him with a driving mistake or error.

Hey dude...it's rallying in EUROPE. We've grown up with these...have a look at the WRC races now and to WRC at Colin McRae time...

If you had think hard about left foot breaking then "heel and toe" breaking will blow your mind. That is breaking and accelerating at the same time with one foot.

Hello. With all my respect I could have googled GROUP B RALLY and I would have enjoyed the video more, today the rally continues WRC. On the other hand, in addition to the US and Australia, there are many more countries, and especially in Europe, these races take place, including Argentina, and now Indonesia, there is also a rally championship in Africa.

It did happen in the states...check out Michelle Mouton..A crazy and talented French lady that won Pikes peak...She's a legend.F1 in a forest is the best way to look at it.

Group B was extremely attractive to watch back then, because of the vehicles, but above all because of Walter Röhrl (you have to look at his story separately, I can only recommend it). The spectators, yes, at the time, very dangerous (I thought there were also some serious accidents because of this), somehow the track couldn't be cordoned off in such a way that there were no spectators on the track, which for some it was even a "sport " was to wait until the last moment and only then jump away; I don't even want to imagine what it must have been like as a driver. And yes, the Aufi Quattro had a lot of power back then (at times even more), but that's no guarantee of success, especially in rallying, you need other things to be able to be at the front; Traction (which is solved with the four-wheel drive) and a good driver who can handle it. In Europe, the majority of us drive manual cars, so everyone is actually used to using both feet. But when you're used to the clutch, the pressure and everything, and then you press the brake with your left foot, it usually doesn't work like you thought it would because you're not used to the feel of the brake pedal.

Group B is the golden era of rally.

Scotland mate. Used to watch them in the forests of the Scottish Borders in the '80s. Regarding spectator safety, there were signs here and there saying 'Motor sport is dangerous '. I'd say that's plenty.

Because there were no rules in Group B did the changes in the engine designs come thick and fast. This type of rallying pushed car engine design to the limit. In America the engine design was linear. You had a V8 and then there were incremental changes. With rallying the designers basically went back to the drawing board.

All rally has a navigator, and WRC is the current coversion, it's still going...

That lancia that burst into flames could go from 0mph to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds.

I'll admit I'm a wimp. If I had been watching one of these races, it would have been on a hill through binoculars. At the end of a stage, mechanics usually had to remove fingers from seams in the car's body. This actually happened.

Yes, the rally sport had to change many things. But look at KZread for Rally 2022 and you'll see it's still crazy.

group B was best rally of all time!today there ist the wrc championship,but its total different!!!in group B everything was possible,they even race paris-dakar with these cars!!!!the audi was at the pikes peak with around 600hp!monsters on wheels,no matter gravel,wet,rocks,ice or whatever!

if you are amazed of australia, then you need to hear about finland.. literally anyone who has a car, the rally license, and a driver's license can race in the local rallies the car has to be inspected and road legal and within the regulations (rollcages, correct seats, etc.). the class that you racee within is chosen by what type of car you use.

This class was banned in mid 80s due to being too dangerous for divers to keep control of ...and rally is a sport that allows spectators to get really close. Yes second person in the car gives you directions. That's Just How all rally is done. This was/is world wide, but in Australia is in most ways like America with the rules.. Stock and Indy car do road courses don't they? Australia holds an indy car event every year still I think. Just means public road made into a race track once a year really...or when there is race day is there. Race days can bring big $$ and many places around the world get tourist $$ from holding rally and F1 events. It's all 'official' with roads closed down and local council permission, on TV ect..like any official organised motor racing event.
