''You know your car is fast, when in the morning you are scared to unlock it'' - Rohl for that iconic Audi Quattro
You have to consider that the S1 can do the same speed on gravel plus even at 130+mph the S1 was still pulling ahead. Given that the S1 is 37 years old just goes to show how far Group B was ahead of it's time plus just how amazing the engineers that created these cars were and how incredibly talented the drivers were to drive these flat out on single track roads at 140mph+

@@matsv201 As someone who drives a 2007 Volvo S60R with a 6 speed manual (2.5L 5 Cyl with a turbo), it is really hard to beat other drivers in a short drag if they have a similar power configuration and AWD but with an automatic that is decently modern. Even against another S60R or V70R. That Rally driver did some fantastic launches considering. It's really easy to either dump the clutch too fast and bog the engine down, or feather the clutch too much and burn your clutch instead of just punching the car out of the gate so to speak. Getting it right is one of the best feelings you can have driving a car though.
@spartan9458

I also should add, I don't know the exact torque curve on the Quattro's, but my 2007 S60R gets max torque at 1850 RPM, which makes it almost impossible to suffer turbo lag beyond maybe a half-second at any speed or gear. I was pretty confident there wouldn't be much turbo lag when the guy tried to get him with lag in gear 2, though I had some doubts in gear 3 and was surprised at how much lead he got verses the gear 2 starts. I suppose the lighter weight and greater power really showed there in that lower RPM match start. Also, it's impressive how fast it went despite the massive wing on the back, those things add so much drag at high speeds verses a slick car.
The Sport Quattro is tuned down to keep it longer lasting for the future. They had around 550-600 hp in race trim. The most powerfull version was the Pikes Peak, I'm not sure, but I think it had a bunch more. There is in Germany the company LCE Performance, they can build you one with 700 Hp and more from scratch. The Sport Quattro which owns Ken Block now was originally the masterpiece and show car from LCE Performance.

The 5 cyl engines all had a great sound. Also the series vehicles. The B3 and C3 mid 80's (1985 onwards I think) models were hot dip galvanized and many still drive with history plates and still look great. This is due to the 144° ignition interval, with no piston running in sync with another. Whether Volvo, Audi or Mercedes. Even the diesel engines were great. A Mercedes 5 cyl diesel in a taxi covers a million kilometers.

I Absolutely LOVE 5 Cylinder engines. My first Car was a 1998 Volvo V70 T5 with a 2.3 Turbo and that thing was angry sounding as heck. My father called it the "Rocket Sled" as it basically looked like a sled box, but holy crap it was fast. I was highly fortunate to get my hands on a 2007 S60R with a 6 speed manual. I cant' get over it it's so amazing . I'm past 158k miles on it and it still runs like new, the engine is super reliable too. (unfortunately the previous 4 owners didn't take such good care of it and I had to replace the entire gearbox and clutch assembly, makes me wonder what they did to it, cause I've done my own share of mess ups and it didn't care.) I have to say also, It's SO hard to even match good automatics on launch with a manual. Seriously. I found a good middle ground but if I try to straight go for broke I either clutch dump too early and bog the engine down, or I barbecue the clutch. That said, when you do get a perfect launch with a manual, it's one of the most satisfying things you can do with a car.

Clarkson z'n Favoriete Rally Battle: 1983 Audi Quattro VS. Lancia 037 Is a really cool video of a best group B battle ever
Actually the RS3 sounds beautiful, its just the limiter i think from neutral, but if you goes full on throttle, its beautiful, with an exhaust sounds so similar to the S1 old car.
Brakes was probably the weakest part of Group B bolides. Literally all top-pilots of Delta S4 complained about that "it was absolutely monster, but no brakes", Markku Alen always said that after left foot braking brakes could literally gone. Actually, Hannu Mikkola drove that Audi Quattro S1 E2 with water cooling brakes at Finland stages (and you can notice that because of white "smoke" after the car). kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKuYsdlqos3Tcs4.html - here is epic documentary about these his runs in Finland. Here we have short video ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKJm2Kqxpqm1iLw.html )about modern brakes and there says about water cooling brakes. Imagine that : Group B already had water cooling brakes almost 40 years ago. Porsche 959 already had ABS and digital suspension height adjustment or tyre pressure monitoring. well, etc, there was a lot of innovations.
@vintageman91

They had mad acceleration and decent grip, but the brakes was not the best, hard to handle of course and also they could not use the handbrake so tight corners on tarmac was a weak spot for the 4wd group b cars. You could see that at the tightest corners of corsica that they had to either slow down significantly and hug the outside of the corner as mutch as possible or do a 3 point turn.
@sometimesidreamaboutcheese

@@vintageman91 yes, because of early developement of central differential, when using handbrake during rolling could literally stop all 4 wheels. But this techological disadvantage was already done during 87 year, so it was already under developement to be in the bolides of Group B or Group S. (but greed of FIA headquarters did not let that happens) About grip: actually some of these cars (not Quattro) had extremely good mechanical grip. It could be noticed even during Lancia Delta S4 tests in 1984 (we have video footage in youtube). Or with 205T16 in late rallycross series. And we have nowadays evidence of that into european hillclimb series like Swiss Hillclimbs, where some of Delta S4 are still competetive.
Keep in mind these cars are no longer pushing the numbers they did back in the day for the shake of preserving the components. In race trim the Quattro got to record an official ~590hp, keyword "official"; remember Lancia, Peugeot and Ford recorded way less official power figures, but we all know that no one with turbo and AWD pushed less than 550 to 600 hp in a good day, those were the days!. Now on my own experience I got to see almost every Group B car throughout some events, in fact all but the Peugeot 205 T16 E2, and let me tell you, the Delta S4 and Quattro S1E2 look MENACING, they are RAW. Got to see them together at Vigo and even turned off and standing still look like they're out to eat you alive. The Quattro from the front is almost scary to stare at, can't even imagine what was like to see one at full chat coming at you.
They should have compared them on gravel! 😁

Group B would certainly have been 800+ hp had it been given another year. Lancia had an S4 with twin turbos and a supercharger ready for 1987, but AFAIK it was never raced in any event, not even Pikes Peak. Also I wonder if Audi had a mid engine car underway, as soon as the first 205 Turbo 16 entered a rally it was evident that having the engine in the front wasn't going to cut it.

40 year old brakes behind 15" wheels, maybe 11" diameter, compared to 1 week old brakes behind 18 or 19" wheels at something like 14 or 15" in diameter. Wow. That was way closer than I expected.
I love the tweets of that turbo in that rally car
Underneath the bolt on bits that S1 is an Audi 80 pre-87. I used to own one and it was a pretty car. The thing with those is that they are much sought after because you can drop pretty much anything in it as is, it's that well built. So an 1980 Audi 80 is what I had, 325BHP with a V6 from a VW (I think it was from an Omega, cast pistons cost me $30 and fixing the cylinder walls took a LOT of time with honing tool and different stones) and a supercharger from a Mercedes. Cost me about $500 all in all. Add some bodywork to it and two square rally extra lights from Hella and it looked like amazing. I had people note that, including people with much more expensive cars. I think it's the aggressive stance of the car that makes it look great. That's what has worked for a lot of vehicles. Straight cut gearbox made for rally and it sounded like fucking heaven. Didn't need a radio in that one.
the 2017 - 18 RS3 sounds nice 19 and the new ones have exhaust restrictions to get through emissions but the S1 is epic
The difference in brakes goes to show how far in safety we have came.
There were audis with more power, but due to the thorsen differential, a visko clutch between front and rear drive, it was wery hard to drive. Like Stig Blomqvist (swe) once said: "you can drive thru the same curve a hundred times, every time the car responds differently.." If you need more power, check out the peugeot 205 T16 from 1985-86. It had far more than 600+ hp, and was one of the absolute fastest and most sucessful group B. But the engine sound of the audi is off the charts..
not bad for a car that's best part of 40 years old. but still loved by many today especially the road car which are only increasing in price yearly for a good one.
well regulated, on a bench. a driver measured 770 hp on his group B Audi model. unofficially more than 500 hp, but at the time the power banks were manually adjusted and the power was measured at 3500 rpm... In short, there was a bit dark part at the time... Example for save weight, some have replaced the roll bars with painted cardboard tubes in 80' etc etc...
I drove a audi urquatrro, it's basicly the cheaper, 36??cm longer version of the s1, engine etc is pretty much the same with a little horsepower difference tho, the one i were driving had a nice 600hp/700nm of torque and a nascar clutch to make the power get to the transmission, I drove it for a day, something around 350km in total and man did that car get attention, there was also very little cars that had the power to keep up or even overtake us and it was fun, another friend got to take a few laps on the track with it too that day and the car was something else, and the sound of the audis 2.2t 5cyl engine is pretty mutch unique
Yes the power was unlimited. And that Quattro Rally Audi is not the last itteration of this car. But the power was still correlated to the mass of the vehicule, it had to have a certain ratio from power to mass.
There were times when they max out the boost up to close 50psi boost which gave the Audi group B beast up to almost 1000hp.
Beautiful car, the Audi quattro you shoud have to see in live action in the 80`s, i was a lucky one to see that monster in the Portugal rallye. I miss those days.
The sound of that diverter valve it’s just insane
I never miss a carwow drag race.
Yes! Thank you! Still kicks ass! Everybody knows, that a rally car break pedal is hard as a brick. It is so hard/heavy to push down that you need all your strength to reach like even 50% of the maximum breaking power.
There is a super fun video on Ken Block's channel playing in the Group B car at the Audi motorsport museum that is worth checking out.
Fun fact: To accelerate to 40 kph (25 mph) - the S1 needed a distance of 1 meter (~3 feet). On gravel.
Getting power out of engines hasn't been much of an issue for half a century. Doing it while ever consuming less and less fuel while maintaining power is the hard part. And it's gotten so good we're now at a point we're pushing 1000+bhp out of 1,6 liter engines that run the entire race without ever refueling. This while in F1, 1 or 2 refuels a race were common. But I think the biggest change of all is braking technology. From special materials for disks, to running HUGE disks to having electronic mechanisms that maintain grip throughout braking, all to the point you can stop a modern fully loaded lorry faster than a 30 year old race car.
I think the RS200 evolution was quicker than that- 600hp and about the same weight. Absolute monster
Race trim of the last group B rally cars was that 500-550bhp because the engine has to last for 10-20 hours of racing without exploding. Rallycross trim of the same cars, where the races last minutes instead of hours, were upto 700-800bhp.
I suggest to talk about the adventure of Alfa Romeo 155 in DTM. It is a legend.

Hi Ian awesome content as per usual! If you get a chance check out the Lancia delta s4 with 760hp absolutely crazy
The strongest S1 Quattro was 570-600HP, but the Pikes Peak version is 750HP, but this is special. The strongest engine for normal racing is 720HP, this used in American IMSA in Audi 90 GTO (amazing and succsess car, better than big block amerericans) and previous versions. But..... interresting fact: the rally quattro is actually de-tuned cause its a museum piece and its also not running on the usual racing fuel. this thing would rip so hard (originally 700+ hp with fuel it would make more like 750 to 950 hp) also the marketing department prbl also told the audi driver to not push it cause they dont wand the new car to look like a timmid grocery getter.

I've seen the S1 up close. You'd be surprised how small they are (or should I say short). But pure raw power. That RS3 is not a slow car by any means. But the Group B's are monsters.

You're right, the wheelbase was really short, the front and rear axle look very close one to another. That makes the car look a little weird on a side view, but impressive anyway.
500 bhp was probably a lesser number used but 530-550 bhp was most likely available.
If you want the maddest I5 turbo noises, check out the Audi 200 Trans Am and the 90 IMSA GTO. There's a great story behind those two cars too.
I’m like carwow !! He make a lot of crazy drag race
The truth is by the time the S1 came out it was totally outclassed by the 205 t16 and the Delta s4. Group S was the next move on from group b, sensibly it was abandoned when it became obvious even group b was getting too dangerous
the quattro from seeing one up close up was tech years ahead of its time, which is still true today.
Damn Car wow is everywhere now 😂
Should have left his video leader in there. "Hi. How are you? It's Matt Watson here from Carwow." :) Edit; I just love hearing him say it everytime
Yes the Audi S1 was up to 620 hp. 3,5 seconds from 0 - 100 km/h on dirt track^^ Sure the S1 dont have good breaks because the one who breaks is loosing ;) Greetings from germany!
Hi Ian, the Audi RS4. Is heavier. If the RS3 had the weight taken out and had the downforce like spoiler/ back wing, and front spoiler/splitter, like the Audi Quattro, it might be an even race. That's my opinion. Anyway keep up the good work from Dave in Australia.
Sorry again, you must not forget the competitive cars at the time like, Lancia Delta integrale, Peugeot 205 turbo 16, Ford rs 200, Rover rs 4. It was insane, those monsters running against the clock. It was i, don´t now.
The horsepower per ton factor comes into play quite hard. The Audi RS3 is a lot heavier than the S1 (1550 Kg vs 1011 Kg ) and of course the S1 has more horsepower than the RS3 (500 vs 401). So it's no surprise the S1 won most categories.
ken block audi visit look that up enough said Rest easy Ken Lia sure got talent
Great fun!!! 👌
It's hilarious becuz the group b Audi quattro is actually one of if not the fastest rally car for it's time.

No, the Sport Quattro was not the fastest, it was not that competitive against the 205 T16 and Lancia S4, the S4 0 to 60 on gravel in under 3 seconds
Check out Darrel Waltrip doing a ride along at Bathurst. It is too short for a reaction but being a NASCAR guy I think you will laugh your butt off.
Its actually detuned to 500HP, basically the same engine was also run in IMSA and could make north of 700 when they turned it up.
