His real name is Horst Heinz Köhler, a very average and unsophisticated German name that reflects his social background. He studied pedagogy and worked as a music therapist with mentally handicapped people. I think his musical style is strongly influenced by the typical tastes of mentally handicapped people. Many of them love really low brow commercial entertainment such as horrible German singer Heino. When I did my year of social work (instead of military service) around 1990, the greatest star for the mentally handicapped people I dealt with was David Hasselhoff. Guildo Horn developed a style and persona which is read as genuine by the mentally handicapped and as ironic by most other people. Guildo is not a real first name. It's the surname of German singer Rex Guildo and the result of adding an L to Guido, a somewhat stereotypical first name for that kind of popular singer. As a result of Guildo Horn's balancing act, he had two groups of fans who do not normally have a lot of commonalities. Some years after his success at Eurovision Song Contest, he had a talk show "Guildo und seine Gäste" (Guildo and his Guests) for two seasons, followed by 10 sporadic episodes. In this talk show, all his guests are mentally handicapped, and are not exploited but treated with dignity. It's a great program for understanding what it is like to (correctly!) interact with the mentally handicapped.

Heino was for a long time know for singing old folksongs. Why is someone who sings folksongs of his culture mentaly ill? You are a typical intolerant modernling.

The singer of 1961 was Lale Andersen, who was famous for Lili Marleen in wwll.
