In Eurovision you only vote for your favourites, not against your least favourites, so a lot of the time the last place isn't necessarily the worst but the least memorable. Nowadays only the top 10 from every country gets points so you could technically be ranked 11th by every country and end up with zero points

This video also only showed the last place of the finals, not including whoever came last in the semi-finals, so toward the end it wasn't really the real last place of the contest.

most people also vote for their favourite country. its mostly political. You can almost always predict to which country another country will give 8,10 or 12 points.. And the people are the lesser evil here. The judges who are supposed to be neutral very often vote for neighbouring countries or political allies, even if these countries barely get points from other judges. It is so stupid, just an embarrassing competition Cyprus giving 10/12 points to greece Belgium giving 10 points to the netherlands Finland giving 8/6 points to norway/sweden Sweden giving 10/7 points to norway/finland Denmark giving 10/8 points to sweden/norway Romania giving 12 points to moldova Moldova giving 10 points to romania Portugal giving 12 points to spain Latvia giving 10 points to lithuania Lithuania giving 8 points to estonia It is just so predictable...every year. Even if a country gets almost zero point, they usually have some neighbours to back them up

@@becker1264 Everyone does it so it doesn't really affect things too much, everyone has neighbors so everyone are likely to get some neighbor points. In order to win you actually have to be good/entertaining/stand out, neighbor votes is not enough to give anyone the win. If it was just about neighbor votes then Germany should be higher every year, they have a lot of neighbors who doesn't vote for them despite having good relationships and liking each other, the songs just hasn't been good enough.

@@alftuvik3820 You have to consider which kind of people actually take up the phone to vote. It certainly is not the average person. Germany received a lot of hate for letting in refugees in 2015, and recently for being to defensive about ukraine. And generally for being influential and "bossy" in the EU. Every county usually enters with bad songs. But suddenly in 2015 there was a switch and germany always ends last? This is not a coincidence anymore. 6/7 times germany ended place 25-27. The only exception was a song that was on ed sheeran/james arthur level. Yes, the other german songs were bad, but so are usually the songs of 85% of all other countries. I am 100% convinced of the countries/flags were hidden this year, the german entry would not have finished last. The song is nothing mindblowing, but dozens of songs were just as if not worse. Year after year there is more focus on politics and less on music

@@becker1264 Which kind of people would pick up the phone to vote? I don't know of anyone who watches without voting, whether they are huge fans or just casually watching, but that might differ from country to country, depends how much people care in general. Germany is one of the most liked countries in Europe by people in general, there has been some political backlash this year, but way more political backlash in recent years towards countries like Italy, UK, Poland, Belarus, Hungary, Russia or Israel, without that affecting these countries results. In the last almost 20 years where I have been watching there's no winners besides Ukraine where you could make an argument about it being political and even then, they would not have won if people didn't like their songs. Israel even managed to win while being one of the most controversial and least popular countries in the contest, Russia only has 1 placement below the top 10 in the last 10 years despite being the most unpopular country in ESC by far politically and Azerbaijan used to be a regular in the top 10 when nobody knew who they were and they barely had any friends.

The 1974 song may have been last at Eurovision but it remains one of the most important songs in Portugal's history. It was used as the first radio signal for the military to start a revolution that ended the dictatorship in Portugal on April 25, 1974. Very special for us. =)

You should probably have picked the video "All Last Places of the Semi-Finals in Eurovision Song Contest (2004-2022)" instead to get the worst, because those who made it into the Grand Final were top 10 in their grandfinal, so they were among the best. (Unless they were Big 5 countries or host of course, they never have to go through the semis.)

I think a lot of people (me included) look forward to the bad bad stuff and actually enjoy it because it’s bold and different so they get votes for that reason too. A lot of the losers are only last because they’re generic and forgettable. People love the unique stuff that makes them laugh or want to dance no matter how bad it is so the really bad songs do a lot better than the generic stuff

A good eurovision song is the whole package. The melody, the lyrics, the voice, the stage.

I think the way to view it is think of it like the Miss Universe competition. Everyone there is prettier than most, but someone still has to lose. Doesn't mean they're bad at what they did.

At Eurovision, some years are "meh" and some years are strong, but 2021 dialled strong up to 11. Both semis were a blood bath. Every country sent a good song. I felt so bad for James Newman because he didn't deserve nil-nil. He was such a good sport about it though. And Sam is just a stellar human being.

The Swedish band "Forbes" weren't singing about insects, unfortunately... it's the most embarrassing Swedish entry to date. They are singing about Beatles and that they still remember who they were (The Beatles split up in 1970, so this is just 7 years after, but they act like it was 50 years ago and sing lines like "We still have their records" and "Great grandpa can tell you who they are". I'm happy this was in Swedish so people can't tell what they were singing, because this was really, really bad. Our other entry on this list, 8:18 Monica Zetterlund's "En gång i Stockholm" (Once in Stockholm) it's the exact opposite, it's is so beautiful, she was a very famous singer in Sweden and the lyrics of that song is amazing, I really love that song! The lyrics are like "The first silent snow of winter is falling, summer is over. I have a sailboat in Lake Klara, come my friend, let's sail." and "For you and me it's still summer, where you and I are, the summer is, and it's never ending, because I love you, hold my hand, hold my hand". I can't explain it, in Swedish it's really beautiful picture she is painting.

There can be a ton of reasons why a song comes in last place, maybe it just doesn't leave that big of an impression, the performance/vocals/song could be a lot better, but it still also comes down to individual taste, when you vote and some decent songs might get low places because a lot of people might only vote for their absolute favorite. And after the semi got introduced in 2004 and turned into two semis in 2008, there are the last place of their respective semi finale, so there they failed harder, even if you may still like them.

Guys, even though these are last places, you don't need to carp every single moment from this recap just to justify their coming last. It's not always 100% deserved and can be easily explained. Moreover, it's last places in finals which means it's not the worst song of whole contests. To see actual last places since 2004 when the semi finals were introduced, you need to watch the video Last places in Semi Finals.

Remember: It’s a song WRITING contest, not a singing contest. ;)

You might be surprised this year. Lord of the Lost won the German National Final, with a huge televote score. It's my winner this year, & in my top 5 ever in Eurovision history. It wasn't written for Eurovision specifically but is the title track for their album that came out just after Xmas. Eurovision needs more metal.

I mean, to be fair, the loser of Eurovision is not necessarily the worst, because I guarantee some people vote for the worst one because it is bad. The loser is honestly often the blandest or most boring. The most forgettable.

Eurovision is a song contest, not a singing contest! Especially in the early years it was all about the song, not the singer. The singers were all established artists in their home countries and it was an honour if you were selected to participate.

Like you commented about the boy band meets Spice Girls, not seldom Eurovision contestants tried to emulate what was popular on the charts, but often a year or more too late. The Alanis Morrissette-wannabee is a great example. It's also very common to copy the format of the previous years winner. And sometimes a popular actor or actress or old artist beloved by the older generations wins the national contest and is sent to the big contest.

Ok, I'll just try to clear something up, since apparently a lot of people actually believe it: Sending a bad song on purpose to not win isn't actually a thing. Yes, there are a few examples of purposefully bad or weird songs but even for those, it was definitely not out of fear that they have to host or anything like that. It's a common misconception that the winner is somehow forced to host the competition the next year. What it actually means to win is that you get asked first and if you're incapable of hosting it on your own, there's ways around it (like, co-hosting abroad or just choosing not to). A good example would be Monaco winning in 1971 and the BBC taking over the hosting in 1972, since they couldn't find a suitable venue in Monaco; Luxembourg and Israel have also declined to host in following years. It's just that usually the countries/national broadcasters that end up winning are also financially stable enough and have a venue for it. For that reason, it has only very rarely happened that the winner didn't host the next year. The reason why smaller and/or poorer countries who might not be able to host often also don't have the best songs is just because they have less funding and less people applying, meaning a lower a chance that there's a good song/artist among them.

Yeah Turkiye sounded a bit pitchy and the framing was bad (someone else pointed out one of the dancers arms got cropped out of frame) but that said Beth for Spain and Urban Trad for Belgium sounded great - maybe it was just the early acts that suffered. Were Russia suffering sound issues? It was tATu who was ever gonna know the difference? Or based on the fact they were third and within ten points it wouldn't appear many cared?

I think you both need to watch a few full shows to grasp what Eurovision is. Eurovision is full of colour, big costumes and dramatic performances.

As far as where you go from here, if you wanted to do countries, you could do UK or Ireland and avoid most of the language barriers, or you could check out Norway and see some of the more unusual songs they've got. Whatever you decide to do, I'll be sure to check it out. Keep up the good work!

Okay, repeat after me: Eurovision is NOT A SINGING COMPETITION! It's not to find the best voice. It's about the song writing and performance which is why you get some truly wild results some years. Having a good voice helps, but the competition is, as I said, not about who is technically the best singer. I really eppreciate all the eurovision content though. I'd love to see you react to some of the most bonkers (and fun) competitors over the years.

Apparently no one noticed that Corry Brokken had the fewest points in 1958, but was the winner of the festifal one year earlier

Norway 1978 had Jahn Teigen in last place. He was a beloved folk singer with long success and respect in his home country. His song, Mil Etter Mil, is a low-key and lonesome ballad he ordinarily sang very well. For some reason, the arrangement for Eurovision made it much more dramatic and had Jahn singing out of his range. I'm not surprised the poor guy made a bad impression in the contest.

He planned to annoy the president of the entertainment department on NRK by ruining his performance and did it too well. Luckily, he was quickly forgiven by the Norwegian public and was even allowed to represent Norway again in 1982 and 1983 with much better results.

Please react to all of the UK entries. We’ve sent some absolutely horrendous entries in recent years, I honestly think once we became part of the Big 5 we really stopped giving a shit about the quality of our entries until this year where we actually made an effort to send a pretty decent singer and song. Having said that, I did actually like the song James Newman entered, it just wasn’t particular very good live unfortunately.

Easier to understand those scores if you think about scoring system - if there was a good song ten juries voted for that song, leaving small amount of points to give to next countries. That's why there is so many 0 pointers here and its smaller amount later (more countries voting, more juries etc.)

More importantly: If you come 11th in every country, you won't get any points. Another entry might place 20th in every country except one, where they place 10th. The first one will place last while the second one, even though it's the worse song, will place second to last. Sometimes it's just the scoring system. Not always though. Some songs are just bad.

Coming from one of the countries with most last places (Finland), I now see how utterly, utterly unfair Eurovision has been towards us over they years!! I've always known it, we never got the placings we deserved, but this is really... Utter shock. :( But anyway, please react next to "weirdest entries/eurovision wtf moments" videos, or then the 3rd places ;)

The semi finals are even worse

RIP Vesa-Matti Loiri (he died last year). He was very famous actor, comedian, singer. Real life multitalented. I´m not sure, if playing fly was his hobby or did he us it on his works. But I know his voice got better and better by years to come. Sadly cancer did take him away only 77 years old.

You should react to one of the most memorable esc moments/weirdest entries/eurovision wtf moments videos. There's been plenty of oddities, fail moments and simply things which I'm sure would make you say WTF?!?! Like to see you react to those.

All the different facial expression during some of the songs made this even more fun to watch. 😅

What's worth noting, in 1999 they lifted the language restrictions, And shortly after, all the last place songs are in English.

About Finland's Vesa-Matti Loiri in 1980, you commented how he was just holding the flute there; he also played it a bit, it just wasn't in this clip. Or at least he appeared to play it; I don't know what the Eurovision rules were back then, but nowadays, all instruments have to be pre-recorded. Only the singing is live. When performers appear to be playing instruments on stage, they aren't actually mic'd or plugged in. But yes, Loiri knew how to play the flute. An interesting factoid about him: in 1993, he voiced the part of the Genie in the Finnish version of Disney's Aladdin. Disney named the Finnish version the best foreign-language dubbing of the film and gave Loiri special recognition for his "exceptionally unique" performance. I haven't actually heard the original English soundtrack with Robin Williams so I can't compare them, but since Disney themselves said that Loiri did the part exceptionally well... well, I'll take their word for it. His career spanned six decades and whenever someone has such a long career, it usually has both high and low points. ....let's just say that this Eurovision performance was one of those low points.

Most countries have a national competition to determine who will represent them at Eurovision, so that means that virtually every entry already is a winner - at the national level. Thus there shouldn’t really be any truly crappy entries, yet sometimes there are. But especially in the early years thls was a prestigious contest and all countries sent their very best singers.

Holy shit... I just thought I recognized the face of the singer from 1989... what??? That guy went from zero (in this Eurovision) to hero (of clubhouses). I love him as the singer of Gus Gus!!! He must have been ahead of his time. 🤯

I have to feel a little bit for Jemini. It was never a winning song, but their in ear monitors were not working so they had no idea what note they were singing, causing it to sound like a record played at slow speed. UK were not exactly inviting votes with that song, but if they had been able to hear their own vocals they might at least been able to escape with some dignity.

6:15 That's nothing but an unfounded conspiracy theory and not based in reality. People who tell this nonsense always say that countries don't want to host the contest because of the costs, however these people unfortunately don't know how the costs are covered: It's not the country that hosts the contest that has to pay, the costs are covered by the membership fees of the EBU, the European Broadcasting Union. The vast majority of the costs are covered by the Big Five countries (Spain, the UK, France, Italy and in particular Germany which alone pays about 30 % of the costs). The hosting country pays only it usual share and not much else. Especially in the early years things like that didn't even come to people's minds. Eurovision was started as a way to help healing the wounds of the war through culture and music. People didn't think about costs or stuff like that at all.

You may have noticed everyone switched from singing in their native language or French and started singing in English... Coincidentally that was about the 90's too.. a lot changed back then politically, socially, economically - a lot of big changes in Europe...

I'm not a fan of Eurovision, but it's very interesting seeing you guys trying to make sense of this. I hope you'll start the compilations with every entry for every country. One of the most interesting ones is Belgium, my country. Because we are split down the middle and speak 2 different languages (Dutch and French), the entries alternate every year between a singer from the French speaking part and a singer from the Dutch speaking part. Don't get me wrong, they are equally bad. 1 winner, several last places (including the ones in the purple jumpsuits) and a whole lot of mediocre songs :D

Do the 3rd places first and certain countries next!

13:58 - I thought he reminded me of Joe Pesci :) Malta is the longest waiting country to win - 49 years. They've never won since entering the competition in 1971 with the above act. Between 1973-1977 and since 1999 countries can sing in English. All other years had to be their native tongue.

The performers in the purple jumpsuite from Belgium performed till 2 years ago and they have succes in Belgium.

No, so some countries (France, Italy, Germany, Spain and UK) are made to participate in the finals each year. These are the countries that purposefully, sometimes, send bad entries to avoid hosting it the next year. The rest of the countries compete in two semi-finals to access the grand final event, but they can choose to not participate at all. They don't need to send bad entries to avoid hosting. The one from Ireland in 2007 went through the semi-finals I assume

Actually no - before 2008, there was one semi but the top ten countries of the previous year automatically qualified for the final the next year in 2006 Ireland were in the top ten so they didn't need to battle through the semis.

The reason you’re seeing Norway, Finland and such so much in the last few years is because of the semifinals. The song in last place has at least made it to the finals. Unless it’s last years winner or one of the big 5. Then they go straight to the finals which also means voters don’t hear those songs as often and you really need to hear some of these songs more than once to appreciate them.

It's a song competition, not a singing competition, especially back in the day, before televoting. Can't believe Nicole et Hugo came last. They were amazing.

Spain 1983 = love!

A little late here, but as a Norwegian we are the proud owners of the most last places and nil points in Eurovision history! And a lot of them are actually legends in our music history. Just not popular with anybody else 😂 We love most of them though

The ESC is originally a competition for songwriting. The Songwriters get the trophy. Not the singers if they are not the writers as well. So I guess especially in the beginning where there was only a jury and no Televoting it was really about Songwriting quality and not about Singing and the Show.

Loving these videos -- they bring back so many memories of my childhood and teenage years! (First winner I can actually remember was Udo Jürgens for Austria in 1966; I was ten at the time.) What you have to keep in mind for the early years is that there was no public voting yet; the entries were judged by "expert" juries, solely on lyrics and musical content, NOT voice or performance. Also, fun fact: Israel's first winner (1980s or 90s; I forget) was actually transgender, long before Conchita Wurst (the Bearded Lady) won for Austria in the 2000s!

The guy you called Greg Davis, was actually a national treasure here in Finland! Everyone loved him, but sadly he just died a couple months before y'all posted this :C.

Hi guys! I'm from Israel. I liked your Eurovision reactions! My favorite last places are 1987 (legendary 80s gym track!), 2007 Semi Final Last place ("Mala Dama" by Czech band Kabat! Loved that!!!) and 2008 Semi Final Last place (The only great song San Marino ever sent to the competition! Only sent crap since then)

You guys should react to this years esc! The finale was yesterday and it is a great real view of the current state of the contest, bribery and all.

I think a lot of the last places are there not exactly because they're bad, but either because they were in a style that was going out of fashion, and because of inter-country politics. Also, interesting fact about 1974's loser song. It was the song that was broadcast in the Portuguese radio to signal the revolutionary captains to get to the streets and start the revolution. Also, WTF Finland, are you trying to establish some kind of world record for losing the Eurovision?

I was in a play that was set in a bar as they all waited for that song to be played on the radio and start the Carnation Revolution. A really cool history to learn about.

How rude - no, we're def. not, Eurovision has just screwed Finland up more than is right!! :( Nearly always placed much lower than deserved, even if not last. All the more reason we should win this year! And anyway, it's Norway that holds the record for most last places, AFAIK.

1980's last place singer was actually mainly a comedy actor in Finland. Loved his Uuno Turhapuro movies he did a lot of them.👍

I'm absolutely stunned about 2007, because Dervish is my one of my favourite bands. They're legendary. One of the most famous current Irish folk groups. Cathy Jordan is an amazing singer. Check out their albums midsummer's night, Live at Johnny Fox's, Playing with Fire and Traveling Show. They're so awesome, and I'm really sad that this had to be your first encounter with Dervish. It's like hearing the Beatles sing a Rebecca Black song.

1978 Norway, Janh Teigen, famous norwegian artist. Great singer and performer, songwriter. Died too young. He got known for getting 0 point in the final. We got 0 point several times but won 3 times. Revenge😂

Stuff like that in Europe is not a big deal, they are way less conservative about sex than America.

Poor old "Gemini" sounded so out of tune singing CRY BABY because they couldn't hear the music - which is an absolute nightmare and sometimes done deliberately to make people sound bad - I experienced that myself playing guitar in a band at our first quite big gig as a support band ... the first song was sounding great, we were really enjoying it - I could hear everything crystal clear through the monitor speakers ... then some person deliberately switched them off completely so then i could hardly hear ANYTHING of the other band members because they were all much further away from me than usual, on such a big stage - I could see the singers lips moving but couldn't tell what he was singing ... so it was a nightmare from then on, having to desperately concentrate on where we must be in the song, rather than play along with them ... all I could hear was my own guitar ... it's VERY disconcerting, especially when it comes to your solo's and you HOPE you;re not playing over the wrong part!!! - the guys at the desk obviously did it on purpose to try to make us sound bad. they didn't even need to try - we WERE bad anyway! That was the first time we were sounding good ... for about 1 minute - until they turned the monitors off. "Bar stewards".

Yes, that´s right: Last places Top 5 are: Norway 11, Finland 9, Germany 9, Belgium 8, Austria 7. Sweden only has 2 (one of the lowest).

1999 dress was done by a really famous clothes designer in Spain who always do this kind of things 😂

Given your reaction to 1999, You should react to every Barbara Dex Award winner. Its an award thing hosted online and given to the worst dressed contestant of every year. Its named after the last place singer from 1993, who wore a beige dress she made herself

There’s always got to be someone that comes last despite being a good vocalist. You’d have to watch the whole contest to make your mind up 😂

Sometimes to understand what was wrong with the song (or the opposite) you have to see the whole performance. For example the guy from the UK in 2019 sang the whole first part of the song out of tune but caught up in the second part of the song. But still he was much better than Madonna in the interval act the same year.

Don't remind me....I mean, I give it to Israel, they always go all out with the show, unlike Italy, which was pretty lackluster. But they lack the creativity of the Swedes.

In theroy the judging panel votes were done on the rehersal sound broadcast only, with the public vote coming on the performance broadcast one

Jahn Teigen is legendary, and so is the song home in Norway. We love him. RIP Jahn.
