Politics and 'neighborly voting' in Eurovision may prevent a country from getting zero points, or last, or even get them a 1 or 2 places higher than they should, but it wouldn't be enough to get the win. Even in 2022, Ukraine has had an amazing track record of great good songs with great stagings, and this year is no different. The outpouring of support most likely secured them the trophy this year, but it is still a winning song regardless of the war.

1983 was actually a song tribute to the Jewish population killed by the Nazi's during world war two, it may seem like a fun song (which it should seem like) but if you search up the backstory, it's very interesting. The song contest was in Germany that year, so it was only fitting to go up there and sing a song saying: I'm alive. I'm pretty sure they had some type of symbol in their outfits (maybe even the outfits themselves) for the yellow star the jews were forced to have back then to identify them from the rest. Anyways, hope you see this as it could explain some things about the political nature of Eurovision to you, and please react to more Eurovision content, keep it up

Yes, there was a tie in 1991. Both Sweden and France got 146 p. According to the tie breaking rules back then, they counted which country got the most 12 p. But both got 4! So they counted which country got the most 10 p. France got 10 p from two countries, but Sweden got 10 p from five countries, so Sweden was the winner.

@@malcolmrowe9003 Yes, they have changed the tie breaking rules in 2007, so getting low points from many countries trumphs getting high scores from fewer countries. Sweden got points from 17/21 countries, while France got points from 18/21 countries so France would've won with the 2007 rules, since France gave Sweden 0 p while Sweden gave France 5 p. But they changed the tie breaking rules again in 2016 to the country that received more points from the televoting is the winner. If they would have had the same points in the televoting, then the country that received points from more countries in the televoting. If they had still been a tie then then the country that recieved the most 12 p in the televoting, if still a tie the 10 p and so on. If they still had been a tie after that, then the running order would have decided, strangely enough, and since Sweden performed 8th and France 9th in the running order Sweden would have won.

When you comment about the number of points between 1st and 2nd, remember that the number of available points increases as the number of entries does - in the early years there were only around a dozen entries and these days there are well over 40. Also there was the change to the voting system in the mid-2010s where each country announces the jury points and the televote points, so that instantly doubled the number of available points.

Leaving school at 14, he tried a succession of jobs without remaining in any of them for very long, before National Service beckoned in 1948. Monro became a tank driving instructor in the British armed forces and was posted to Hong Kong. His recordings include the UK Top 10 hits: "Portrait of My Love", "My Kind of Girl", "Softly As I Leave You", "Walk Away" and "Yesterday" (originally by The Beatles). He also recorded several film themes such as "From Russia with Love" for the James Bond film of the same name, "Born Free" for the film of the same name and "On Days Like These" for The Italian Job, original with Michael Caine.

Yes, Erés Tu is the song in Tommy Boy, great ear :D As for the margins, it has all to do with the different voting systems: now half the votes are awarded by a jury, and half by televote, from all participating countries, but there have been 9 different voting systems since 1997, when televoting was first tried. Talking about 2009: all participating countries (except San Marino, because of the size of the Country) had both a jury and a televote, combining the votes you got points for 10 songs (12, 10, 8-1) that were then added up. Useless to say that the more participants, the higher the points pool, the bigger the margins. Since 2016 they're even larger, because each participant Country gives twice the points: half from a jury (12, 10, 8-1) and half from the televote (12, 10, 8-1), so basically if you have 40 participants, you have 80 entities voting.

This is a poor argument. Winners often have nothing to do with the jury vote. I would love for us to have won but sometimes you just need to suck it up and move on. What if we had lost to someone else, there would be another sob story here in it’s place. Ukraines situation just made the sob story easy to write.

@@hjt091 Since Spain was 3rd in both jury vote and televote it seems like a possibility. We will never know, it was very close between UK (466 p) and Spain (459). "Stefania" is still a good song, war or no war, so it would have been in the top and might have won anyway, but perhaps not getting 12 p from almost every televote and winning by 165 p over the runner up. Those 12 p would probably been spread out more, to UK, Spain, Ukraine, but also Serbia and Sweden would have got a larger share or those perhaps. If Russia had been in the contest, perhaps they would have been there in the top too getting some of those points.

It was at the very least the first song entirely in Spanish to do so. *For the record, I cannot at the moment for the life of me remember if Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki" (As the English title came to be) was earlier or later, because that was also not in English and MAY have been earlier.

As for Sam Ryder you need to watch his whole performance. He was great. Also you don't realise how big Eurovison is around Europe. It's a whole week long event with heats for the countries that aren't in the founding 5 who put up the money and created the competition and went straight through. So all week there is tv coverage showing performances and interviews. Sam Ryder is also a really lovely bloke and he will have got votes for that too. Not to underestimate how much Europe hates the United Kingdom right now. We basically told them to f**k off.

1969 when we had 4 winners isn't the same year as 1968 when Cliff Richard took 2nd place. Sweden won in 1991 because we had a handful more of 10 points than France. We had the same number of 12 points, thus they went down the line to see who had more 10, 9 , 8 and so on. 2009 Norway was Ryback, he had the highest score ever up until that point. So he blew it out of the water. 2007, 2012 and 2023 runner ups are all epic, fun songs that are still, and will always be, fan favorites.
