@@GlennJ1881 College Football in the US is the closest atmosphere to English and World Football. For the most part, the opposing sides are separated and there can be fights if some fans are intoxicated. I’m a massive fan of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide and we have some songs and chants, albeit not at the level of English Football fans. College Football is MUCH superior than the boring NFL.

Some random nutter or two will just start a chart and it either catches on or it doesn't. Helps if they are in the right section of the ground! Over the years, clubs will accumulate a wide range of well known chant in their fanbase... and there's also many chants that many smaller clubs will use/adapt that we all heard growing up

As a match going supporter of my local Premier League team since 1967, these showcase a humourous side that is typical fair game at a football ground today. Years ago, the chants and songs were far more brutal and cutting than they are now. I can recall many lyrics being sung en masse by thousands back in the day that were seen as funny and provocative in equal measure at the time but aren't deemed accepatable today. It was they way we were, and we've moved on since then, but yeah, some of the songs were savage compared to today.

Sadly not true. Worrying development is that plenty of people have been arrested for saying pretty innocuous things on social media. In fact in recent years more people have been arrested by police in the UK for things they've said than in Russia. The Labour Party are proposing more 'hate speech' legislation, so that will only get worse.

We're seen as a little backwards and our accent is mocked...to a stage where there are three famous West country people with accents, all of whom are seen as a little odd! Strange thing is that when people move here they never want to leave. As we say in the local dialect "it's gert lush" Up the gas

Jimmy Savile was a famous DJ working at BBC, presenter of the famous UK Top of the Pop which was like Dick Clark's American Bandstand. He turned out to be a paedophile vicitmizing hundred of young girls, but was never convicted as most of the evidence was exposed after he died. Adam Johnson was a good UK professional footballer but was found out to be a paedophile with a 15 year old teenager. Sentenced to 6 years in prison but released after 3 years. He was in England's U1, U21 and Senior Team, played in the 2010 World Cup. Thus, a very good footballer that got his career ended with the jail sentence. Tried to paly abroad after prison release but I see no record of that.

I find it strange that football fans are strictly segregated. It doesn't happen in rugby. Either union or league. The posh lads game or the rough lads game. I found the fans reaction to the Irish win over South Africa by singing Zombie, by The Cranberries very moving. Both Scots and Irish fans, singing along and stood shoulder to shoulder. The fact that the Irish team is made up from Irish Republic citizens and Ulstermen... somewhat gives me hope.

oh yes, american team sports seem to be really thin skinned, your example NBA shows that very clearly. when european players are being asked in interviews, if they handle the pressure in the NBA well, always have to hold back not to burst out laughing... 😅compared to europe, there is no pressure on.😉

well it is a valid question though comming from an american .. thers quite alot about the european football culture that really doesnt compute 🙂. another thing you totally misunderstood the Bristol city fans, they were singing about them self, saying we'r stupid and can only drive a tractor.... not about other fans.....@@TheEclecticBeard

Being thin-skinned is not a British traight, we insult our friends, enemies and even ourselves with equal enthusiasm, and very rarely really mean it. If you can't take an insult (and usually respond in kind) then you didn't grow up in the British school system (state or private). Exactly where the ease with which we can chant in unison comes from is a mystery to me, so is the fact that a lot of other peoples seem to have difficulty with it.

Oh, I adore it when a bunch of midwits sing silly songs about the club that they follow. The club is probably owned by middle eastern sheikh or Chinese investors. The manager is foreign. All of the players are foreign, yet they align themselves with a shirt that changes it's sponsorship deal with a multi national corporation every year. Alun, I did laugh. The chants were very silly. The Irish rugby fans reaction to their win over South Africa made me cry. It has been doing the rounds, trending. Zombies!
