The first 4 or so minutes of this episode (and it's even more so in just the audio version of it) is one of my favourite moments from these three cause it is just three blokes with different opinions having a serious discussion about an interesting topic with barely any comedy or stupid stuff being said and I wish there was more conversations like this from them. Obviously then Karl mentions the mirrored wall and it all comes crashing down.
Louis Wain is the artist with the cats. He was mentally ill but probably not schizophrenic. There's debate over whether or not his art actually deteriorated over time. He did some "normal" cat paintings after he supposedly lost it and was only doing psychedelic cats.

Theres another famous example of an artist going through dementia. He regularly painted self portraits which gradually became more abstract as the illness progressed until they were no longer recognizable. Quite a fitting parallel to the effect of the disease itself.
Talking to people via the wall mirror so, as Karl says: "you don't have to turn your neck so there's no neck usage". Sounds like a time saver to me. Neck usage is not something we consider enough in this busy world we live in. 😂

Think the cat artist you’re thinking of is Louis Wain
The CGI artist was most likely using a video of the studio when they where recording the show. So she could make the animation directly from a real video
The best example of art I've ever seen is the stone carvings outside York minster, they're all hand carved and made by people hundreds of years ago. There's even a ghost story about them, when experts were renovating some of York minster in yhe 1970s one person was approached by a scruffy looking man wearing a threadbare shirt, he asked what they thought of the carving then said "i made that" then disappeared. Even if the story isn't true it makes you think these carvings had real effort and time put into them, someone was very proud of making them
Speaking of art and sculptures/statues. There was a statue of a horse in a village near where I live, someone stole the horse becuase it was Brass, so they replaced it with a rocking horse. If you look up Ryhope horse it'll pop up
I think Stephen does a super job. Ricky often goes over the top and I worry that he'll shut Karl down but then Stephen steps in, cools things down a bit and encourages Karl's thought process.
Thanks for being our tour guide to the Karl Pilkington Experience on art. I don't know much about Karl but I know what I like!

As that man's schizophrenia progressed, he drew nearer and nearer to the true nature of cats: chaos.
Interesting about the artist and the cat paintings. Made me wonder if his actual perception of what a cat looked like changed, or was he still trying to present a faithful image but his mind wouldn't let him. If it's the second scenario, then that would be absolute torture for him.

I don't think the shark in a tank is sophisticated. I think it's perverted and Ricky is perverted for thinking it's sophisticated. Because if you have to destroy life to create art, which needs life to appreciate it, and you're not sophisticated enough to see the blindingly obvious hypocrisy of that, then that is perversion. Plus I don't like seeing animals used as mere objects. Their life, even if not to us, has value.

@@conormurphy4328 I won't justify the existence of murdering an animal for art. If it's not meant to be sophisticated, then why do people like Steve and Ricky keep making that their key reflection about it? I'm not buying this "it's not meant to be sophisticated" excuse. Doesn't stand up to the evidence. Anyway, my opinion of it is the thing is dead now so nothing can be done to save it. But that doesn't mean I will condone the murder of more animals for art. Ricky says he's an animal lover. Where's the evidence for this? Because he owns a cat and a salamander as pets? What happened to, "wild animals should be left alone"? Since when did salamander's become domesticated? I can pick holes all day and all year long, but honestly the reason I don't like it is I find the act of killing an animal for art disgusting. If art is about trying to get a response, then the Holocaust was art. Wait a minute, I hear Bullshit Man flying by. 😂

Art is a strange thing. The question of "would I have it in my house" is almost always no for me. It's great that the artist gets to express whatever is going on in their mind, but it very rarely speaks to me or my view. Many times it even challenges my perception of things and I don't want something in my house that pisses me off half the time. Or that time about 20 years ago when my friends sister painted a self portrait. A nude one. It had artistic merit/a backstory and the point of the picture wasn't her nudity as such but rather what it represent in that situation. She even could've used a model cause it wasn't HER situation if that makes any sense. But what the hell am I supposed to say or think? How long do I keep staring at it (The painting I mean) trying to extract some meaning from it? Her art form a lot of painting people in various situations with photo-realism. Really good. She's also a pretty girl and she really captured her many great features in that painting, but I'm not buying that and if I did i wouldn't know where to put it. That painting did sell for a very reasonable sum and has changed hands again since for more than that so the jokes on me in the end I guess. Not that I could afford it in the first place. At the end of the day art is a strange thing and can be anything. It's to be venerated and protected. What else do we as humans fight wars over if not our art and culture? It's the most important thing to us as humans, it's what sets us apart from the animals. I will fight for any artists right to survive and their right to express themselves, but at the same time I don't care about their art. Not one bit. But I like that it's there.
Remember to watch the whole of the first episode of season 3 as it's a little bit different at the start than it normally is in all the other episodes. Just thought I'd give you a heads-up so you don't miss it, as its really funny.

A lot of conceptual art relies on people either being outraged, not understanding, or attempting to dismiss it. Nobody would deny that one of the purposes of art is to inspire commentary and by shaking your head and going "no" you're actively helping to provide that commentary. You could argue that the banana on the wall wouldn't be art without people like you. It doesn't even matter if anybody tries to counter this idea, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. It was created to make people think, discuss and debate and that's exactly what's happening. In a sense, art being so incredibly meta as to be about itself and nothing else is as pure and genuine as art could possibly get.

Your facial expressions are awesome, Mandy 😊
🧅 Well, to Karl's point (at the beginning), it's true that you've already seen the art so many times, and after so long it gets boring, and there's no point to it, and that's why I'm not wanting to run to my city's art museum every few months (or even the zoo, for that matter, to see the same animals) - kind of like the famous line "Same shit, different day," but art is still nice to have, and some of it nice to look at. If I could have a house with space for art, and the money to buy art left and right, I'd have one room set up as an art gallery just for myself in my own home. The same with a library. A separate room for the library. So many books. If I could. Also, if I could take a urinal and put it on its side and sign it, and that's art, how bout I send in a bottle of my piss and call that art, and laugh when people go to see it. 😄More of a laugh if they had to pay tickets to see it, and I were to get a dollar for each ticket sold. Actually, people do .. do stuff like that, as we see with the urinal. People do anything and everything. They buy anything. They eat anything. There's always that one person who (fill in the blank), no matter how silly or how outrageous or how odd it is. The question is, how did the guy get possession of the urinal to be able to send it in as art? Did he yank it off the wall when he first used it? That thief. Did he have a truck to drive it home in? I hope he washed his hands after that. 😂And, how did he convince the gallery to accept it? And now, I wish I could show Mandy my drawings, some of which go as far back as high school. I can draw in the 3D effect. One of them, I made up a character. Some, I drew cartoon characters and video game characters, like Mario. Now I also want to see Mandy's art. And with the mirror, so Karl understands what I was saying with my "turd" comment in the other video. 😂Just sitting there looking at yourself all day. I was like "it's awkward" (and turns out Stephen and Ricky agree with me, and I think you were saying you agree with me - that it's weird), and Karl was saying "at least it changes." Which, I get that, too. Pregnant lady sculpture...... There was once a commercial with a fountain statue in the form of a guy pissing. So all of the water would go up into the statue, and then it would come out "down there." There's also a famous sculpture of the same idea, in Europe, as part of a building. Like a guy pissing. I would have that sculpture at home if I could, cause I found that funny. By the way, when Karl said "Thalidomide," that reminded me .... look up the song "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel. There's a line in the song: "Children of Thalidomide." The song came out in 1989, and it basically took various historical references decade by decade, starting around the 1950s or so, and going up until the 1980s (since that's when the song came out), and Billy Joel made those historical references into the song. It's a really cool song. Some things you might know what the historical reference is referring to, but others you might have to look up what happened, but still cool song. Also, breaking news. Ricky and Stephen saw Karl's point so many times in this one. Mandy, curious, who, besides me, is left (still here) from the time your channel was a gaming channel? I've been looking for Adam, Rob, John, I wonder where Ian went, Victor, Scanners, all of the OGs. Am I the only one left? Well, Mandy is amazing. Whatever she has for us, I'm here for her. Hello Mandy, knowing you are quite artistic yourself I have a story I think you will appreciate. I once knew this amazing elderly gentleman who was an unbelievably talented painter, he painted his own work but also recreated famous paintings, not in a fraudulent way, he always signed them with his name but if someone wanted the Mona Lisa hanging in their living room, instead of buying a print, he would paint an ‘original’ reproduction. Anyway in later years he developed Parkinson’s which left him very very shakey, the medication helped the shaking but severally affected his ability to paint but he found when he stopped taking the medication even though his shakes were bad most of the time for some reason when he picked up a paint brush his shaking completely stopped and he could paint to the finest and most delicate details. He never took the medication after that, he would live with the affects of the disease if it meant he could carry on painting. A trully lovely and talented man. Any way sorry for the long comment, hope you think it was worth it👍
