England weather = the usual uncomfortable summer : HOT, humid & muggy plus an Indian summer / fresh start of winter. As is often the case here, due to the highly varied micro climates in Britain, people speak for themselves subjectively / their location when it comes to describing conditions - they dont speak for the rest of us. Plus they'll focus on the less good stuff now as it's winter here. This year in England the summer went to the second half of October. May, June, early July, September, October = HOT & uncomfortable humidity. September is generally a warm - hot month in England regardless. October can vary a bit more year to year. As for winter so far - the more pleasant mild winter season stuff is now back here this week.

For random info, the Mensa IQ test has two tests and the final result is averaged. One is the logic-based with shapes, patterns and sequences, while the other is based on the language of the country you're in. You only need to score a certain mark on either of those tests to get into Mensa. These kind of tests are a good marker for your natural processing ability - for example, people who score an average of 120 on both tests will reliably learn significantly quicker than someone who scored 80. The difference is significant; it might take someone with 80 around 2 weeks to learn a concept, or maybe never at all, that same concept could be learnt by the person with 120 in minutes. This is regardless of the topic of the concept being learnt. Although, it shouldn't really be understood as 'higher is better', both of these types of people exist and we shouldn't ignore either side. When it comes to fulfillment in life, ideally each person should be comfortable and be challenged in whatever role would suit them, and society luckily does provide a range of jobs which would allow for that for the most part. I really encourage everyone to take a formal IQ assessment, just to know yourself better and have a better grasp of what challenges and roles would be better for you based on your natural capacity for them!

I could easily be wrong but I feel that some of Mandy’s tests were not proper IQ tests if they were testing knowledge, I thought that was the whole point of them - to differentiate between knowledge and intelligence. Also, I thought Germaine was incorrect with her choice of words, aren’t ‘clever’ and ‘intelligent’ interchangeable? It’s ’knowledge’ and ‘intelligence’ that mean different things.

  • @AD270479

    @AD270479

    7 ай бұрын

@@pteppic76 If they were testing knowledge, they definitely weren't related to IQ. IQ is to do with being able to work things out, rather than your ability to remember something you've been told at some point. There would be no fair & even way to form the test to suit everybody if it was done to test your knowledge... And your other point, intelligence & knowledge are what's similar. Intelligence is having knowledge & being able to apply it academically. Clever is more down to be able to work something out practically & think quickly in certain situations.

Mensa's test is pretty much the same kind of non-verbal pattern recognition/completion multiple-choice questions as the Raven Matrices which is probably what you were given as a child. They used to have more numerical sequences and other stuff, but they've been phasing out anything that could disadvantage people from different cultures or with differing education levels.

As you listen to more of the XFM shows I think you will realise Karl is a lot smarter than people think. Karl was a producer in London before he ever met Ricky and Steve, he was smart enough to know that that show did not need a third 'smart Alec', what it needed was someone to get the best out of R & S, he did that perfectly. He certainly had an unusual upbringing, at least unusual to people who did not grow up in working class / council estates in the North of England so he had lots of material in his memories. He was also smart enough to realise that if he leaned into the 'stupid but funny' persona he could retire from the rat race in his 40s as a millionaire.

Karl's last line "I'm sure I want to be more intelligent because if I was, would I be me any more?" I feel you got a little emotional there. This line sums up the title of the programme - Satisfied Fool. I don't personally think Karl is a fool. He's not smart but he has a very unique way of thinking and in certain areas, I'm sure Karl is actually quite clever. How cool to see Professor Heinz Wolff on there! I watched this guy on TV when I was growing up. He was a fascinating man. He passed away in 2017. Germaine Greer's kitchen...that blue... pretty much my favourite colour, royal blue. Kinda like my car eh? :) I would definitely do my kitchen in that colour. Mine is burgundy atm. David Icke... yeah.. well.. he's put some loony stuff out there that's for sure but he did make the most sense here. Will Self, what a jerk. Kick Karl out (love to see him try) or lather him up in a bath?? I mean, what?? BTW Mandy, if I stop you saying 'fridge' and get you back to dropping the 'f bomb', would I be a fridge fixer? LOL Loved your reaction to this. Up until I got to watch this at four thirty pm, I'd had a crap day. Thank you for brightening it up again Mandy. You are therapy. And I have no idea why I've just teared up writing that. Jeez what's going on? Literally wiping tears off my cheeks here. Anyway, just thanks. I'm going to make a tea. And that smile at 19:10. Not to defend some of the "intelligent" people in this video, but one thing you learn as you become more knowledgeable about life and the world is that there are very few simple questions. That, and a mark of intelligence is modesty, which is why you will typically not find a more modest group of people than a group of scientists, who despite being experts in their fields will usually downplay how much they know and how certain they are about their findings.

  • @vaudevillian7

I don’t think they were deflecting as much as they were trying to get him think about it another way and the instinct is to pose that as a question so the other person gets to the realisation themselves that your point 2 is the case rather than them just saying point 2 - because the first approach will have more impact and stick more with the person than just telling them.

As others have said, it was nothing to do with knowledge and memory of facts, it was about processing information presented to you, a bit like the logic tests you described taking yourself. I got 151 in my test and was a Mensa member for many years, before leaving (for reasons explained on my channel).

(The weather in Argentina) I mentioned this week that if you have the humid subtropical climate of the American south, that I feel sorry for you, cause summer will literally feel like h3ll, but then I looked into it further and while you ARE in that climate, it doesn't hit as bad as the American south where you are. At least for now. In the south, it gets to be 48.8 degrees Celsius and it stays there for months, and that's before factoring in humidity. This year the humidity was stifling in the south, on top of the temps being hotter and hotter, so that's why the heat hit different. It's here to stay and it's only going to get hotter and hotter and hotter and hotter and hotter in the south, to where one article even asked if Texas will be habitable in the future due tot he heat. After factoring in humidity, heat indexes in some areas got closer to 60 to 65.5 degrees Celsius. And this is what they deal with ALL summer, EVERY summer. That's why I was like "I feel sorry for you" a few days ago. But I saw that for you, that climate is somewhat cooler. But then, you all in that climate think 16 Celsius is COLD?! Try - 28.8 Celsius. THAT'S cold, and I had that during three different winters. And then I had one winter with 66 consecutive days below 6.66 degrees Celsius. So, I get the opposite extreme the south gets. I'd rather get what the south gets.

I think the accepted everyday manifestation of intelligence is basically the ability to dogmatically retain information and regurgitate it on command, and if you can do that then you are rewarded through the university system and then a career. In that regard we would call a dog which can learn a repertoire of tricks as intelligent, too. It's more of a party trick than intelligence. Roll over!

lol wil self (rude guy who wanted to soap karl down!) is an author... he has been on comedy shows with bob mortimer... he is very much tongue in cheek, same with Germaine (australian feminist, critic etc)... david icke does seem lovely guy and has genuinely predicted many things that have been happening over the last few years...

I joined Mensa for a while, mainly to have something to put for extra curricular activities on a job application. I found it was mostly science students. I ended up only going the once, as I did find it heavy going talking to them. Many had one area of interest, and would only talk about that. Still, I think Greer was being unnecessarily mean.

All true. Except one thing. Every expert is told it's part of a comedy show. They are all informed by the producers ahead of time that this is a character, but to react as if it's a genuine interview. Diane Morgan (Cunk) and Brooker have talked about the process before.

Although I disagree with Greer about a number of things I've always quite liked her because she just seems to be brutally honest in how she interacts. Will Self, however, always seems to take genuine joy in making people feel stupid and worthless. The only people I've come across who actually like him are people who are equally unpleasant in that way.

It's difficult sometimes for people at opposite ends of the IQ spectrum to communicate. A highly intelligent person might come across as rude and obnoxious, when they're actually just joking around. Doing a bit only works if the other person understands you're doing a bit. Having a high IQ doesn't always mean you have a high EQ. You can be super smart, but if you don't know how to talk to people, if there's layers of implied sarcasm and wit that aren't coming across to the other person, you're going to come off as an unpleasant, arrogant prick. Communication is about more than just speaking the same language, you have to be operating on the same sort of level to get all the unspoken parts. For instance, I found it quite amusing when Will Self essentially said he wanted to give Karl a bath and put him to bed, meaning Karl's childlike "ignorance" invoked a kind of caring, nurturing feeling in him. Whereas, clearly, other people go, wtf is this dude on about?! Communication is rife with pitfalls. So many unintended conflicts happen because of a simple disconnect in communication.

I think intelligence is overvalued in society, culturally. It IS important, when it comes to society building, medicine , engineering etc. But interpersonally and about how to live our lives its not the most important thing. Emotions drives us much more. Be empathetic. Be kind, including to your self

Time after time we see Karl getting straight to the heart of things while Ricky and Stephen are disappearing in waves of giggles. He is undeniably on the gloomier end of the scale but that doesn't make him wrong or stupid. Thanks Mandy, I wouldn't have seen this otherwise.
