This was the second night of season 5 of "I'm a Singer" (aka Singer) in 2017, a singing competition show in China. The first night of this season of the show he was the first performer and did "S.O.S." The entire rest of the season was literally every other competitor having to follow THAT! Singer is invitation only so you cannot audition to get on the show; it's considered elite for this reason. Dimash was the youngest performer to be invited up until this point and only the second non-native performer. He had been homesick and a bit depressed as this was his first time away from his family and country practically alone thus far. His dad came to support him but didn't want to add any pressure on him before he competed which is why he stayed hidden. Later Dimash would say that he was a bit embarrassed that he had been so flirty with the audience now that he knew his dad was there; at the time it wasn't something he usually did. The original song was performed by Russian artist Vitas and it incorporates only one key change. Imagine someone outdoing your award winning song! Vitas got butt-hurt so he banned Dimash from ever performing it again! Dimash legitimately does not care what place he gets in a competition. He only wants to make his family, country, and Dears proud and know that he gave his best performance. Just one of the many things that makes him The Best Performer in the World!

Dimash does not speak 100's of languages. He memorizes the words phonetically in 16 languages but only speaks Kazakh, Russian, English and some Mandarin. During the TV show The Singer in 2017 Dimash only knew a few words in English and Mandarin. 🥰🇨🇦

@@skirk9184 LOL 🤣🤣🤣 I used "only" simply because of the hundreds comment. I am the " dumb" one in my family with no head for languages so barely manage 1 language. Both siblings and parents speak 5 or more each.😪

He doesn’t speak 100 languages, he sings in several languages. He is the best in this generation.Dimash is art❤❤

When Dimash first came to China to compete in this 2017 "Singer" Competition, he didn't know how long he might continue. In fact he went right through with several performances on this series, and came Runner Up. ( which seriously annoyed his, by then, many millions of devoted Chinese fans. ) So he wound up being there for a few months and his family, of course, had other commitments back in Kazakhstan, so he was quite homesick. He does highly value his father's opinion, and his mother's. Both parents are very well regarded singers in their own right, but Dimash later said he was worried about whether his father might have thought he was 'too cheeky' (meaning playing up to the audience, being flirtatious! - which we rarely see him do. ) Remember the bulk of his training was in 'serious' classical music / voice. As to the song, it is a Vitas original. Vitas is a very popular Russian singer, who had a lot of success with this song in Russia, but also in China and other parts of Asia and largely Eastern Europe. Dimash naturally smashed it outta the park, taking it up a further 2 levels higher than Vitas and of course had much more power and control in the higher register, not only because he's a 'Manprano'!, but because of his solid 'toolkit' of classical voice training. Vitas however was 'less than pleased' and - allegedly - immediately came out saying he would "Never give Dimash permission to sing any of his songs - every again - anywhere- any time! " Apparently the producers of the show had failed to secure the copyright permissions from Vitas before this went to air. Dimash has respected Vitas position and has never sung this song again, nonetheless it / the Singer series is now out there for all to enjoy! 😆

Dimash is no more than 22 here and away from home for the 1st time, no English or Chinese . He cud not win this competition, he was invited to take part but as a foreigner he wud not b allowed to win. ( they changed that rule the following year,) the audience is made up of pple in the world of music , are the judges of who goes thru each week. The contestants are all Chinese, well established, and professional singers. Dimash was invited to take part. The fact he cudnt win is amerialated by the fact that after his 1st performance (sos) they immediately shared Dimash to the world having recognised his talent and wonderful personality. This took Dimash's career world wide & exploded his popularity. Dimash already had a sound reputation in Kazakhstan and surrounding countries - eg Russia Belarus etc having won several prestigious singing competitions and many distinguished medals and honours werexawarded to him for his citizenship. But as said, the Chinese opened things up for him even further.

He did that staccato thing to prove to his critics that he wasn't lip syncing those higher notes. He does that or will wave the mic in front of his mouth so that you know that is what he is singing with no auto-tone or prior recording. His father didn't know if he would be able to make it there. He had work he was obligated to finish. The there was only one flight he could make to get there. Then there was the weather was an issue. He got his work done and made the flight which found an opening in the weather of about 20 minutes to take-off and get ahead of it. Then when the plane landed he was rushed to the venue and walked in the door of the studio at the back as Dimash was coming on from the front. This was the last time Dimash was able to sing this song in public as Vitas got a court injunction against Dimash singing it. As an aside, Dimash said later in an interview that he regrets showing off so much, and wouldn't have if he knew his father was there. From his Dad's reactions I don't think he minded one bit.

Dimash was pretty homesick at this point and his dad travelled from Kazakhstan to surprise him.

Vitash told Dimash to never cover this again. I think it's cuz Dimash did it better. He had been away for a while on the show, and his father came to support him. Dimash later said he wouldn't have been so *cheeky* if he had known his dad was there. Isn't he so sweet?

@@punkmetal144 the part about Vitas? Yes it is true. Listen to the Vitas version, then Dimash. He sings better AND raises the notes. Pretty damn sure Vitas knew he'd never be able to sing it again cuz people would say he was the one doing a copy (and a bad one at that) Lionel Richie also told him not to cover "Hello" again. On the other hand, Dimash does Adagio, and the original person performed it with him. Sinful Passion is a cover and he had the original band perform with him.

Great reaction! This was the competition show that showed Dimash's talent to the world. Hard to believe but he came in 2nd place. The rules of the competition only allowed a Chinese born singer to win. The rule was changed for the following year.

Dimash is a very humble person, and he does love his family very much, as well as his country. The original singers' voice, to me, had more of a shrill kind of tone. Dimash is so smooth. not true, his father went to China with him but had to go back to Kazakhistan for business (more like 3 weeks) , Dimash is very close to his whole family and was alone in a foreign country with only his interpreter/friend, he didn't understand language and was a tad homesick so his Dad flew back in time for this 2nd performance on The Singer

Please also listen to my second favorite singer dan Vasc. Listen to his Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar and you will be amazed how he lives the role. He is also classically trained like dimash.

I think you’re right…Dimash wanted to make his father proud! He’s VERY close to his family. --------- Vitas (a Russian singer) was the first to sing Opera 2. After Dimash sang it in 2017, Vitas had a court order issued to prevent Dimash from singing it again! (Dimash is a better singer!)

In any competition show in China, it is forbidden by law to use any kind of artificial support such as autotune, lipsyncing, etc and has to be a live performance !

This was just the 2nd episode of this show. The 1st song was "S.O.S". After that episode aired, Dimash had fans. He did not believe it at first until he came out of his hotel room. 😆 This is the show that launched his career. He was already known in Kazakhstan, Russia, and Belarus, but this was China. He has millions of Chinese fans. He stayed in China for years after this show. He performed and won awards all across China.

The original is by Vitas who sued the competition (not Dimadh) for covering his song without permission. Dimash may not sing it again.

Vitis is the original singer, he has stopped Dimash from singing this song again.
