American Long-Haul Economy: DOES IT SUCK? American Airlines Flight Review - LAX to SYD

Edit Sorry for the potato video quality, I got my new camera after I took this trip so I was using my smartphone. Will bring it next time I do one of these!
I recently flew American Airlines from Los Angeles California to Sydney Australia. The flight was 15 (!!!) hours. In Economy. Did it suck?
This is my first attempt at making a flight review. If you'd like to see more in the future, let me know in the comments section and feel free to provide feedback to make them better moving forward! And if you enjoy high-quality aviation videos, check out some of my other videos and subscribe :)

I traveled to Australia once 32 years ago and hope to do so again someday. However, I am almost certain I will only do so on Qantas. I also hope Qantas doesn't retire its A380s before I get to make the trip, although I know that COVID has increased the chance of that happening.

You wouldn't want more food than what AA tosses out to you, as it's complete garbage. I just flew them last week from London. They crew were mean and talked about the passengers they just served as if they would' t hear them. Very unprofessional. The flight over was on BA and was loads better. AA is a shite airline!

@Henry Kidd It was a Boeing 777. It wasn't so much the aircraft, although it was a bit old and could have used an update as it was how rude and unprofessional the crew were. I've flown Lufthansa, South African, BA/United and it was a world of difference.

I've flown AA transatlantic several times, on a 757, 767, 777-200 and 777-300. I'd say their service was sub-par, staff generally making going through the motions and only delivering the basics. Pleased to see you had a better experience. My funniest encounter with AA staff was on a 757 flying long-haul from JFK to Manchester. During the hot drink service, I asked if they has green tea (I didn't think they would to be fair). The lady replied "no, you need to be flying with a proper airline for that. Next time, I'd suggest flying British Airways". It was funny as she made several more joking but negative comments about AA as the flight went on. She was wearing a TWA apron and name badge, so I assume she really didn't want to be working for AA, even though it was more than 10 after TWA disappeared. She was lovely, but clearly not impressed with the in-flight service she was being asked to deliver.

I flew American long-haul a few times. All between North and South America. The equipment was 767ER, 777ER and 787. The 787 was BY FAR the best experience, although I got a free upgrade to premium economy. That probably affected my overall experience positively. In the 777 and 767 the experience was DREADFUL, specially on the 777 due to incredibly cramped seats! (I'm 180 cm tall) The economy seats had so little reclining, people's heads would drop forward as they fell asleep. There was so little cushioning on those seats I would wake up every so often because the top of my bum was hurting and numb (start of bed wounds). My middle seat was VERY squeezed on the sides, I couldn't change position during the flight. In other words - there was very little sleep. Nobody will miss those 767... better seats than AA's 777, but the air was barely breathable (very thin, dry and had some of a petroleum hint) and there was nothing in the means of entertainment. What a torture. AA - never again.

Great review! Its nice to see economy reviews as that is what most of us fly on a regular basis. I fly this route often (living in AUS and family in USA) and must say AA has always provided great service on a good product. I would agree 100% with your review. While I preferred the space of the 777ER they used to use on this route, the economy section on the AA787 is much more spacious feeling as they crammed 10 across on the 777. Many people are comparing Emirates(who has gone downhill)/Singapore/JAL/etc... these are not options on this route (unless you want your 15 hour flight to turn into 24-36 hours) so you really can't compare. Qantas, Virgin Australia, United, AA, Delta are the nonstop options from the US (Air Canada from our friends up north but they don't do LAX/SYD). AA holds their own against this group. I still prefer the A380 (Qantas) overall for the aircraft. The AA flight attendants on the LAXSYD route have always been fantastic! Some of the best I ever experience on AA. Happy you still had a great experience even on the full plane. Again, great review! Keep them coming. Try the chopsticks with your lasagne next time, maybe it will be a life changing experience!

I'm surprised he kinda liked the food. I find AA's food mostly tasteless. To my surprise, United has much better food. Heck they had the nerve to serve me German potato salad on a flight to SFO once! But it was pretty good and not salty at all and to my shock, United wiped the floor with AA in terms of gate performance. They were on time from DFW to Orange County and the only reason they were late getting into SFO was because of a storm that refused to leave so 1/5 of California air traffic had to put up with it. The flights back to DFW were stellar: not a single flight was late by even 10 minutes! I am not embarrassed a bit to say AA got knocked out in that area.

I flew this trip and also the LAX to Auckland, NZ, last year. As commented before, there's no comparison to ANY US airline with foreign airlines. I have flown with Emirates, Singapore, Ethihad, Swiss, Latam, Copa, Avianca, and have been around the world twice, and flying west is best for jetlag, as I had no issues. The difference between in flight service between foreign and US airlines is what's priority. Foreign airlines pay less but benefits are better than US. The lower pay stems from the airlines putting their profits in their equipment and customer experience, something US airlines don't do. Try using LATAM from Santiago, Chile to Sydney, Australia. Now, that's a long flight. Looking forward to my next long flights: Dallas to Tel Aviv, Dallas to Auckland, NZ, and a shorter ( 7 hrs) from Philadelphia to Casablanca, Morocco. Yes, I have jet fuel in my veins, since 1990. Great video.

My sentiments are the same as far as the food and service...easily the best I've had in over 80 flights. (Admittedly though, AA can be very hit or miss on that.) The only downside to my particular flight? The crew locking the windows on the darkest setting until just before landing.

Absolutely NO on locking the windows. I am glued to the window on all flights day or night. I am a big boy now, and don't need to be protected against the dark and monsters!!! It's awesome to just sit and watch something you never get to see like the middle of the ocean on a clear night. Who's big ass stupid idea was that to lock the windows? I don't care how good the service is or the aircraft type. Locking the windows and making nap time for everyone is rediculous.

I'm saying this before I'm even watching the video. 15 hours in economy on American? I don't think this is going to turn out well. I've flown American several times long haul. 10 on the 787 and near double that many times on the 777 for 11.5 hours LAX to GRU. I honestly would rate them as hitting about .300. Which may be decent for MLB baseball, but not that great for a service business. Here goes, I'll see how it turns out.

A350 is mega quiet in front of engines compared to 787. Behind engines is like the same noise as in front of engines on 787. Plus I’d say it’s a comfier ride. I’m 6ft 2 and found bathrooms maybe a bit smaller, but laid out better. Every plane is not nice for me tho with my knees in the seat in front of me lol no matter the legroom

Was there a meal option that required chopsticks served during dinner? Since most trays are pre-plated with salad/bread/dessert/cutlery etc for all meals it’s only the hot meal that gets added when it’s served to you, so if there was an option that required chopsticks to eat it might explain why they where on your tray :)

I went on a 787 about 3 years before this video. (Norwegian Airlines) and the only thing that was good was the fact that the windows were shaded via tinted glass. The cabin felt worse than normal, and like you said in your review the screen couldn’t be tilted and the person in front of me was reclined for the entirety of the flight. There was more, but i feel that may have just been the airline. Anyways great video though!

That’s the flight I would of had to take if I wanted to attend Minecon 2016 as I live in Melbourne and it takes around fourteen and a half hours to fly to LA which is where Minecon was being hosted that year! Pretty much Qantas and American are the only two airlines I know do flights on that route! I also flew on a Boing 787 back in early 2017 with Qantas’s budget airline Jetstar between Melbourne and Singapore for a holiday in Singapore and it was surprisingly comfortable for an eight hour flight however it was still hard to fall asleep on the way home as it was an overnight flight! Also Jetstar didn’t even have in flight wifi at all on their planes as it wasn’t until later that year when Qantas installed in flight wifi on their planes and the great thing is that it is free and complimentary on Qantas flights domestically in Australia by what I’ve experienced on their domestic flights in early 2018 and it’s pretty decent as you get quite a good speed once you are in the air however the plane will loose it’s connection with the satellite if it’s flying through/under clouds or is flying not high enough so you won’t actually be able to use the wifi until the plane gets up to 15-20 thousand feet! :)

Yep, probably because that’s the aileron, which controls left/right roll. It was a pretty gusty day so perhaps the pilot was making adjustments on the runway to straighten the plane out, in which case it’s purpose as an aileron supersedes it’s secondary use as part of the speedbreak system

Having travelled on all four, I can definitely say they are all relaxing aircraft. I'll also say this; whilst wholly accepting 2 engines are more efficient, there's such a sure feel travelling on 4 engined aircraft that 2 engines cant quite match/replicate (& I accept the 777 comes very close), .

It also is very responsive and you won't find yourself jabbing at the screen, trying to make it respond. I also like that it shows a lot of technical stuff such as the plane's position on a 3D map (which I found cute but informative), direction, altitude, wind speed, aircraft speed, and even estimated remaining flight time. I flew DFW to MCO earlier in January on an A321 and at least that felt modern, not ancient and neglected.
