Ex C-5 flight Engineer here before everything was computerized we actually had things to keep us busy. I spent most of my time at the Engineer panel monitoring systems, pressurization, and fuel flow. I also spent allot of time in the performance charts looking up optimal altitudes, and monitoring fuel burn calculations manually. Usually there would be just one pilot at the controls on a long flight, and the other pilot would be resting. The pilot at the controls kept alert monitoring the flight and listening for ATC. We would however listen to the BBC on the HF radio sometimes.

You just need one movie and that's "Airplane" :)

Your videos make me love aviation so much even in quarantine. Coby, keep making videos more often so I can learn more about aviation.

Black Hawk Down isn't an airliner movie, it's a helicopter troop movie but is one of the best movies ever made. 20 something years later it's still great.

Ryanair pilots makes some drawings to see how to make a bad landing. And it works!

2:26 - are there always at least two backup pilots? I seem to remember that the infamous AF447 had only three pilots in total. Have the rules changed since then?

No, if the flight is longer than 8 hours they need bring 1 more "relief" pilot so one of the crew members can rest at a time during the cruise. Long haul flights will have 4 pilots (2 captain 2 first officers).

It's really depending on the airline, and laws of the country they are registered. American carriers will have three if the flight is longer than eight hours, and even more pilots for longer flights. This is done to combat fatigue, as it can be extremely dangerous, and have caused accidents. Also, the pilots who are in charge of the flight, takeoff and land the aircraft. They are active two hours after takeoff, and active two hours before landing. In between, all flight deck crewmembers get the same amount of relief. This is a very interesting subject, and you can also research circadian cycle, for start and off times for flight crews.

Depends on the airline and the length of the route. A 12 hour flight will certainly have two relief pilots.

Airplane movies that people often miss ... Zero Hour! (1957) is the movie Airplane! satirizes and Fate is the Hunter (1964) investigates an airplane crash. Both good.

I mean you can do co pilot but sadly it still needs pilots so sad to those airlines which want a anonymous flight.

YOU ARE SO EASY ON THE EYES lol. Cabin crew here & those pilots dont do much in the air haha. I know some who fake needing to go to the bathroom just so they can go out of the flight deck to stretch their legs lol.

I thought of Airplane when Coby mentions pilots eat a different meal.

Suggestion for future video. Wind turbulence caused by big jets and the problem for following aircraft. Saw this mentioned on a live airport video which referred to a smaller airliner following same route as a 380 and had to leave sufficient time between take offs.

Excellent informative video Coby! Now I'm wondering where exactly the hidden cabin space is on a 787. Personal note: how are you doing keeping in shape for water polo?

Flight and sully are definitely worth a watch

Your breakdown is the ideal.. not the actual truth but more akin to how it would be described in a book. You were bang on with regards to fatigue though. That’s what I dislike the most of this type of flying - I’m a 787 pilot.

Not only that because of ETOPs on a 10 hour flight you'll have at least 4 to 6 Alternate Airports to divert too so you'll be constantly setting up approaches to said airports incase of the worst happening and yes we still get tired... after 7 hours you start to feel exhausted so at 10hours you're pretty much ready to get off even with 3 pilots and 2.5hours rest

8-12 hour flights only require 3 pilots. >12 hour flights require 4 pilot.

The oldest and most classic film is "Runway 08". It's also where the idea of the pilot and co-pilot eating different meals originally came from. No joke. A fictional story created a standard airline policy. The other classic film is "Airport." The original, not the cheesy sequels. These two are good old classic films. And although you didn't ask, I'll recommend a fantastic book. "Fate is the Hunter" by Ernest K. Gann (it's about his own flying experiences). The greatest book about flying ever written--the writing is outstanding and beautiful, the stories are amazing and the history is fascinating (it's about the early days of commercial aviation). I've read it so many times I've lost count.

Watch "into the night" on Netflliix, really recommend it to you.

I love this part "DON'T FORGET TO LOOK UP"

I’d recommend the following three movies (if you can find them): Airport, Airport 1975 and Airport ‘77. The best of these is of course the original, Airport. I believe the Airplane comedy (also good) is a Parody of these movies.

Airplane! and Airplane 2 the sequel. But you will need to watch some of the old 1970s disaster films in the Airport series first to understand the parody. Airport 1975, Airport '77, and The Concorde Airport '79.

I also have the same hobby as you, with cinema, yet mine could be more complicated.

Captain Joe also explains this topic well in some of his videos. He also adds that eating healthily and living a healthy lifestyle can help a pilot deal with the stresses of jet lag. Also, I'd recommend "Airplane!" if you want an airplane film of sorts, but also want a comedic take on it

Let's look at history. In the past 5 crew members in the cockpit: navigator, radioman, flight engineer, copilot, and pilot. Now we are down to two pilots since tech eliminated the others. Airbus has automated an A350 to do autonomous taxi, takeoff and landing using aircraft-based systems. Companies have been modifying and test flying light cargo aircraft to be pilotless. If Airbus system can prove its system then it can perform as the pilot with a human as a backup or vice-versa. I have been a pilot for 40 years and a copilot in modern jets basically goes for the ride. Occasionally they are a lifesaver because current automation can't. Smaller jets fly all around the skies with one pilot because the FAA allows it and size does not really matter when it comes to flying as long as the pilot can reach everything necessary. Automation is going to happen and the FAA/politicians will be bought off to allow it.
