I’m not certain how the story of Bilquis and Technical Boy will come to a head, but I do understand why TB on the whole has been losing influence and power and lost his disciple the CEO. Technical boy used to be very important and influential (like in the days when he meets Wednesday at the Burlesque Club). People used to have an attachment to machines bc they did singular but life changing things. Think the cotton gin or telephone. Now people care less about the technology and more what it can bring them- media, advertising, wealth, entertainment, connectivity. Technical boy is becoming less god and more tool. A tool for people to get what they really want and so their devotion goes to the tv shows not the tv itself, to the entertainment, advertising, information and connections, not the computer or smart phone itself. Tech has lost its magic and wonder and people only see it as a tool. People worship war gods but they don’t worship the swords or chariots or tools that allow those wars to happen.

Yup, essentially what Bilquis herself has been realizing, so, the dynamic between them is subtle but very well thought out and planned. Techboy is essential becoming Bilquis. He's not worshipped, he's a tool for modern day folk to get their easy highs and rocks off.

I think Technical Boy is Pinocchio. He is the puppet aspiring to be a real boy, a creation aspiring to claim the creative spark as his own and failing. He's not Hephaestus; he has no creative ability himself to step beyond the tools created by others. If anything, Hephaestus, who created mechanical maid servants to assist him at the forge in Greek myth, may ultimately be his 'father' in the sense that Gepetto was Pinocchio's father. In contrast, the old gods and more especially the goddesses, are the embodiment of creative power in the real world. Bilquis is likely the Oldest of these, and may prove to be the ultimate Creator who birthed the world as we know it. As I see it, when Bilquis poked Technical Boy, she gave him the experience of war as a truly living being would experience it, and she gave him the knowledge of how life in war ends in bloody death not too different from the Black experience of murderous racism. Ultimately, her presence drove TB back to his womb and his altar, the mechanical puppet, where I think he may actually die.

for those of you disappointed with the show i think it is important to remember this is based (loosely) on a neil gaiman book. if you're not familiar with neil gaiman, his books have very little action, but the genius is his use of language and thoroughness of storytelling. i give the show credit for trying to create the same effect but i also appreciate the level of difficulty of the task at hand. george r r martin and john grisham this is not

I adore the book and all of Gaiman's work. and honestly I adored the first two seasons of this show. Season 3 is not any of these. IMHO, this season has completely abandoned any connection with the source material or even the previous seasons besides a surface level connection. They're making decisions that make no thematic or narrative sense of the story. I'm very disappointed with this season, and I truly hope they resolve whatever is going on behind the season. The themes being discussed in this story is powerful, this season has none of them. What the hell is going on with Starz American Gods???

And, I would add, Frank Herbert’s Dune to @chito ‘s comment and insights. Both the movie and Sci-Fi Channel’s series drove the action parts of the Dune story more. As @chito said about Neil Gaiman I would say about Frank Herbert: “...the genius is his use of language and thoroughness of storytelling.” I have hopes for the upcoming new screen version of “Dune,” but due to the very nature of the story itself (mixing prior years and years of politics and religion), it’s hard to put what someone is thinking (verbalizing on page) onto film, not to mention the length of a film anyone will sit and watch. At least with American Gods presented in series and seasons it breaks things up and also gives time to think about and discuss in places like this...ht to @StoryDive

@@stickmanbw But apparently Mr. Nancy isn't in this portion of the book, so he wasn't going to be included anyway. Jones' response to that claim is a bit all over the place as well and his supposed lawsuit appears not to have materialized. All of the above is to say, I'm not entirely convinced by either side on this. With the mess that was the production of season 2, it really wouldn't surprise me if they didn't know what they were doing right up until they were about to begin production of season 3. It also doesn't help that Nancy wasn't that well written in season 2 (and that was with Jones' involvement) and it has nothing to do with him being too militant. It felt like he was just "there" and his character didn't have a purpose. (That is a separate problem though.)

  • @stickmanbw

    @stickmanbw

@@fong03 His character didn't have any purpose? Mr. Nancy gave two dialogs that express the other way how black people feel in this country. On the first Coming to America, blacks were at ahh with that slave story; it broke down the history of my people so fast, so harsh and so true, angry gets shit done is a rebellious statement that this country didn't allow blacks to practice let alone speak of. The second one in which he compares the life of a dead white woman to the life of a dead black woman in which for one WAR is used to be fueled from her death and the other is just another dead black woman. He talks about human trafficking in the black community as America doesn't really care about but if a white girl goes missing than the law uses all resources to find her. He tells hiw we as a people are not truly allowed to voice our opinions such as Colin Kaepernick hatred for taking a new and yes it is funny that this aired years before the Storming of the Capitol and they have less hatred towards them than a QB taking a knee. Do you know that the GOD MR. NANCY plaidba part in The First Seminole War in this country. There's an exhibit of the Seminoles and yes they were also blacks with a spider leading them into battle, Andrew Jackson lost by the way. Many black people don't know this either and this show told another Coming to America story with an Egyptian God giving the dialog. To us Egypt is slavery if you know your history. Yes America is called Egypt to us in the Bible. So Mr NANCY dialogs was strong and gave a voice to a people that weren't allowed to express their feelings.

I'm a booker, so this EP just feels like back story that wasn't in the book itself. By the time Shadow gets to Lakeside, that is center stage for the story until near the very end. Laura becoming alive again is a serious deviation, so that will be rather interesting how that plays out. I wont lie though.. I'm watching this because I read the book, which was amazing.. the end is going to blow your mind . But if you started with the show, I can see how you might be ready to bail at this point. The original show runners handled the story really well, mixing in short animations, and "coming to America" shorts in the same way the book actually did. I thought it was an innovative way to adapt a book to the small screen. That's all gone now, which is a shame. I'm sticking with it until the end, and it would be nice if Starz allowed them to finish, even if it's an abbreviated ending.

The portrayal of Bilquis’s evolution has been beautiful, from mystery and power to showing her vulnerability, the stigma and patriarchal bigots she came across, forcing her to develop a hard exterior, one even she forgot how to reach into. Then discovering her origin, very relatable for women, our history and role in the society. Globally we see women shedding the warrior phase and stepping into a cosmic nurturer, one who doesn’t need to fight to claim power but embodies it invincibly. Spiritual awakening sure is better with French Fries. :)

Just another way to describe this ongoing struggle/battle. The automaton was limited at what it could do (glitchy)comparing that with Technical boy who is right now glitchy. Who will win the battle in the end - old gods- new gods - will have to wait and see.

I was thinking the same. In the biblical story people have been arguing that the Apple was actually a pommegranate as well. Which is also depicted like that in some artworks. So there is a match between that and the story of Persephone as well. Besides that, I'm not sure if we go to deep if we would interpret Demeter in relation to that story. Because since it is winter, her daughter would be with Hades at this point, which is the time when Demeter is sad an depressed and lets plantlife on earth wilt and wither away. But she doesnt really come across like that.

Orlando Jones was fired from the show. I am pretty sure Salim will develop further this season. Like everyone else, he's been taking his trip through the Underworld to his own power/destiny and driving Mr Ibis nuts in the process. Poor Ibis is a storyteller, and the characters are bringing all the chaos and confusion of life into his quiet little mortuary in Cairo.

It's an example of woke ideology in action, Orlando Jones wanted to push the show in directions the creators weren't happy with (at least that's the rumor), so they expanded Bilquest's role (both as a redention arc, as females can't be "evil" and to cover for his loss), but they lacked both Islamic and gay representation. Gotta tick those boxes.

I think much of the episode reflects rebirth - Laura literally has been 'reborn' to life, Bilquis is 'reborn', literally emerging from the "waters of life" (as in the womb) where her attackers were suspended in the water, Technical Boy at the end returns to his own 'womb' of the hidden dark space under his first creation/version of himself. And Shadow is slowly discovering who he is now he knows he is, at least in part, a God. Demeter wasn't just goddess of agriculture, she had links to the underworld (represented by being in the care home?) reflecting that life is reborn from death (death shown via Ibis' services in Cario, Sweeney's ashes and his blood on the floor). I took a different understanding of Demeter's comments to Odin though: that it is HIS heart that grew cold and small as a result of loss, not hers, though she seems to share that grief. Perhaps they lost their child? She did react dramatically to learning that Shadow was Odin's son.

This episode confirmed for me that I have absolutely NO idea what they're trying to do with this show anymore-- and I feel like neither does the creative team behind this show. There's nothing wrong with changing elements of a book to fit the Television or Film medium, it happens, these are different ways to tell stories; but I do feel like if you're going to do an adaptation the heart and soul of the story should remain, even if you must change plot or characters. This feels like an *extremely* loose adaptation now. This is not american gods, it's not the book, it's not the graphic novel, and it's not even the show. I have no idea what this is anymore. Season 1 was pretty phenomenal in its adaptation and where/how it deviated. Season 2, I honestly really enjoyed, it differed in plot from the book, but it captured the soul, themes, and spirit of the book, bringing in new cultures, characters, and stories that felt like how the book would have handled them (the Mad Sweeney, Thor, and Civil Rights episodes are in my top episodes of the whole series!!) This season feels like... I honestly don't even know. It's not narratively doing the book, it's not thematically doing the book, it's not even anything like the first two seasons. It's just characters and places that happened to be named the same running around doing eff all for 10 episodes while Starz makes its money. The book is a slow burn, the last two season were slow burns--- this season isn't even a slow burn, it's a soup that got put a stove that someone forgot to turn on and is now growing bacteria. (Which only makes me more pissed that they fired Nancy. They said it's because 'he didn't appear in the book" ... like, buddy neither does Oshun... they said they wanted to stay more true to the book this season... it is very clear now that they was a lie. I am so disappointed) I'm going to see this show to it's end, because I love Neil Gaiman, I love mythology, I love exploring history and cultures, and narratives about faith, the spirit, and self-discovery, on a societal level and a personal one. Hopefully this show returns to those themes. As of now, it feels like a high school-grade fanfic, hitting topics that are tumblr blog surface level... at best... Such a shame, for something that was so wonderful, engaging, and interesting.

Although many gods existed for centuries, as political control of Egypt shifted from region to region, these gods were modified or combined with other gods. Often deities with similar traits were combined, as with Hathor and the cow-goddess Bat. However, gods did not always match up perfectly, and new myths were created to explain the new facet of a deity's nature. This explains how a single god or goddess might have what appear to have several unique personalities or backgrounds

Then discovering her origin, very relatable for women, our history and role in the society. I'm still hoping Sweeney will come back somehow. My favorite part this week was seeing Bilquis and Shadow together. She seems more humble after what she went through. They appeared very comfortable with each other.

Demeter says the pain of loss makes you grow cold..she would know all about that especially regarding her daughter Persephone and hades..the months that she would be alway caused Demeter to be very sad and cold which mythology says is the reason for the seasons fall and winter

i think tech boy was one of the original ¨gods¨since artifact 1 seems to be that obsidian spear point. So he is a very Old god but constantly reborns or rebrands unlike others, thats why he is always young.

I believe that Technical Boy hides inside the writing invention because in a way that was either what brought him into the divine state or that potentializes it, hence he is approaching it to absorb some desperately needed power from this talisman to bring him back some of his rapidly dwindling power. As far as Wednesday and the bar blowing up, I gave my opinion under last episodes forum so I won't repeat it here, but I feel it's worth reading if you find the time. As far as Shadow, I think that he will show to in fact hold the identity of Baldur. I am curious to know why shadow refused to use the firearms that TB brought in the trunk of his car but I think it has to do with him not wanting anything to do with technology, showing that he has one more thing in common with his father and the older gods.

Doesn't the 37 reference in this episode correlate back to the Norse numbers 3 & 7, which Wednesday used by multiplying them to call Shadow earlier in the season during episode 4 (maybe 3). Just another reference to these numbers this season that could mean they're going to be significant this season, maybe?

There may also be a con game with that name as well, as it is a classic, but the permutations of 3, 7, 21, 37, and possibly 73 (yet to be seen) may well keep coming up.

If Mr. World is Loki in this version -- and the season finale implies as much -- I'd like to think that the Magician was Loki in disguise; breaking Technical Boy's spirit so that he could later manipulate him with another persona.

To be honest when I first saw it season 1 I honestly was all for the new Gods because the old gods are bloodthirsty who will trick and deceive Humanity just to stay alive and a new modern world and Wednesday is a jerk who would like Zeus himself like to trick and tempt people to join his side to go back to the old days of blood and death of the new gods who I'm not as wholesome as the old ones at least the New Gods are working with Humanity!

I think Technical Boy went back to the automaton just as a place of comfort. Experiencing war, and his own death, is obviously freaking him out. The automaton is where he had his breakdown the first time. Maybe that's just his special place. I think Odin did to Demeter before what he's doing now, pretending to love her to get something he wants. That's why she eludes to how his actions shriveled her heart. Being used is a terrible feeling. She probably still loves him so will eventually be persuaded only to be let down again.

Too me it seems like it's 3 sets of gods. True gods like the orishas, ester, and demeter, then the old gods like odin, bliquess (ppl who became gods ) and then the new gods like mr. World, media and tech boy. The new gods seems like technology coming to life
