I think what stands for the US in a lot of people's minds - that you can do anthing you want to - is exactly one of the problems there, too. Special education that takes a longer period of time, to really qualify people for a lot of jobs doesn't seem to be too important, at least that's my impression.

While our German cops aren't all saints, too (hehehe) ... Here police officer is a skilled profession. Basic training lasts three and a half years. And then the training in the respective job begins. In "The land of the free" they still have to learn a lot about freedom. Freedom is when you can go in the park to meet a few friends for BBQ in public, having a few beers, without the fear of getting shot by police or whoever. Freedom is, when a little mistake does not get you in jail and ruin your life. Freedom is, when you can just see a doctor if you feel sick and get treatment. There is so much freedom lacking in the US compared to Germany that I could not imaging to live there. Holiday was nice, met a lot of friendly people, saw a lot of stunning nature. But could never live there.

You are definitively wrong, my friend. German police can be very insulting, when there is nobody else to support you. Think of the many AfD fans among them. Guess why people chose to become a police officer. The power and esteem they will get is often a not mentioned factor. I was a lay judge, am an academic person, but lately I am handled by police as a pariah of some sort. They were in command, so I ducked down, but such behavior leads to bare hatred in less educated people, which I can understand. But we have to stop that americanization of our police.

Police in Norway would charge the equivalent of 1300€ at that speed. You have to pay right away. They will keep your car until they have received payment. If you are a resident, your license will be suspended for one or two months. I wouldn’t expect them to play the foreigner card, though, and treat a tourist like a piece of s**t. They might get upset if you really put someone else in danger. I have served as a police volunteer in Sweden. Police officers in Scandinavia can be firm if required but are always professionals. But the police were always friendly, even when I was driving too fast on the country road at 3 o'clock at night. 😇 Then the police began to be cut back by politicians at the end of the 90s. I said: "No." And the Cop asked me back: "Are you sure?" The most corrupt thing I saw was when my friend at a public event asked me: "Why does this pig have a camera?" With the cop standing like 3 meters away from us. Later that evenening standing at a park's gate a van of Cops pulled up across the street, thinking nothing of it, a couple of minutes later we lit a cigar, suddenly 5 Cops, amongst them the cop with the camera, jumped out of the van demanding my earlier mentioned friend's ID, but only his. Apparently they thought he was a minor and catch him for underage smoking. He wasn't though snd they had to take of angrily. lol

At my window the cop asked where I wanted to go, realized I was a tourist, checked my papers and sent me off with a warning, reminding me of the road signs (justified in that situation) Absolutely professional, no comparison to that Puford T. Justice impersonator shown here. (In Germany we call that the "Gauleiter" neighbour type.) Later on my trip on a day in New York, I asked a policewoman standing nearby Brooklyn Bridge for the way to get actually on it. Behind her Sunglasses, she addressed me with "Sir" while restating my request, which I then confirmed and she gave me the directions, which I thanked her for. That formality caught me a little off guard there, I had not expected that, did not have such an exchange even when I traveled to London once.

Sticking to the speed limit in the US is a real challenge for many german drivers. It just seems too slow with streets about twice as wide as what we're used to and completely straight for miles and miles. Of course you shouldn't allow yourself to go faster but It can be an overwhelmingly boring experience...

This is why I learned about US civil rights before visiting the country. If a cop acted that xenophobic here in Germany he would 100% get reprimanded.

I live in Germany. One day I parked my car in a pedestrian area in the city center, near a hotel where I had brought my relatives. The police arrived and told me in a very rude manner that I had no right to enter this zone. I recovered from their rudeness for several days.
