The American cocker spaniel is a small sporting dog breed from the United States that has a long, silky coat; big, expressive eyes; and long, furry ears. In the U.S., this breed typically is just referred to as the cocker spaniel. But, outside of the U.S., it’s known as the American cocker spaniel to differentiate it from its close cousin, the English cocker spaniel. The American cocker is the smallest breed in the American Kennel Club’s Sporting group. It was bred to hunt but also to be a loving family companion.

My first dog was a Cocker Spaniel 75 yrs ago. My previous Cocker I obtained 20 years ago and he was a beautiful faithful dog, becoming a seizure alert dog as I have seizures due to head injuries. He was diligent for 17 years until 10 days before his 18th birthday last year life became too difficult and he crossed the rainbow bridge. At 82 I thought I could not get another dog, but two months later after incredible loneliness I purchased another Cocker puppy. He will be 1 yr old in 3 days and what a joy he is. I live in senior housing and he is far better mannered than the older dogs and he is a merry delight. I worry about him when I go but am arranging for him to be placed with someone who needs a dear friend as he is the best... But I figure on being around awhile. We are together 24/7. They need a lot of attention, but will do their very best to please. You will never regret owning a Cocker. He 'talks to me all day mumbling and whining his thoughts then waiting for me to respond. He is hilarious. He is learning to be a service 🐕🦺 too!
