Dogs 101 - AMERICAN COCKER SPANIEL
The American Cocker Spaniel is the smallest in the sporting dog category as recognized by the American Kennel Club. The American Cocker Spaniel is derived from the English Cocker Spaniel, brought to the US in the 1800s and bred to a smaller size by hunters for hunting small game birds like quail.
A rounded head, smaller muzzle, softer coat and lighter body distinguish the American variety from the English. Popularity soared almost overnight, so much so that this playful and sensitive breed became the most popular in the US in the 1940s and the 1950s. It became so popular that it was divided into three further varieties distinguished by coat color: Black, Particolor and ASCOB (or Any Solid Color Other than Black).
The height of a male adult of the breed is between 13.5 and 15.5 inches, with the weight between 24 to 30 pounds. The female is slightly shorter and lighter. The most easily recognizable physical features of the breed are its long silky fur all over the body, hanging down on its legs and belly; its rounded skull; and its upturned short muzzle.
Grooming: An American Cocker Spaniel is covered all over with long hair, which equals regular brushing and combing. Owners often prefer to keep the hair clipped, which means professional clipping every two to three months. It also has long ears and big eyes, which need to be routinely checked for debris and infection. Nails should be trimmed and teeth should be brushed on a regular basis.
Temperament: The breed is known for a sweet, trusting and cheerful nature, which makes it a wonderful playmate for kids and an obedient member of the household. But, the dog is also quite sensitive and does not take well to loud noises, rough handling or being left alone for long periods.
Training: There was a time when the American Cocker Spaniel was known for its hunting prowess, but breeding as a show dog over the years has lowered any such instincts. With some degree of socialization in childhood, it can be well trained and will also get along very well with adults and kids, as well as with other animals. However, training would need to start when this dog is a pup.
Health: The American Cocker Spaniel is known to live up to 15 years, but its median lifespan is between 10 to 11 years. This is lower than other breeds of the same size. Its popularity has led to it being bred by untrained breeders, causing several health issues creeping into some bloodlines. These issues could include ailments related to hearts, eyes, ears, skin or the immune system. Canine epilepsy is an inheritable problem, present in some strains. It is also prone to getting overweight. Regular check-ups and careful nutrition can help keep many of these issues in control.
A common name for the American Cocker Spaniel is the ‘merry’ cocker, and it is not difficult to figure out why. An affectionate breed, it is slightly high maintenance, but repays the care with its eagerness to please and its playful nature.

When I was in the fourth grade we had a female Cocker named Missy. I was given one female named Daisy, then someone dropped out a Male I named Beau, they had pups, I kept one named Samantha, neutered Beau, and Samantha, then bought a Male named Bandit along with a Female Named Brittany. I bred Both females sold their puppies and neutered Daisy and Brittany. Someone dropped out another female named Lucky, I had Pups with her and Bandit, sold them and neutered Lucky. I got one pup for breeding a Female owned by another lady named Kayla, I named the Pup Buffy, the lady came back a year and a half later and asked me to keep Kayla while she was going through a divorce, She never came back after her so she became my number nine. Then I had a program where if the pup did not work out I took them back in to sell again two came back, Sinbad and Rhett, five Years later one pup I sold to a man with a Downs syndrome girl came back because he didn't want the girl to suffer when the dog got old and passed away, his name was Bo Bo. I rescued a black Cocker named Jake. That is thirteen. Currently I don't have any Cocker's, I have a Pyrenees Mountain dog, Bear an Australian Shepherd, Willow a German Pinscher Pepper, a Mountain Fiest who is Deaf named Marley and a Mini Dachshund named Daisy. All but the Pinscher are rescues. There have been many dogs, some cats, three Ferrets and about nine horses. But the Cocker's are my favorite kind of dog.
