America’s Best Roads? - 300zx and 928 Northern Road Trip | Everyday Driver Cars of the Past

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

One of the Best Roads in the US is supposed to be in Montana… but it wasn’t the one we expected. We set out on our North Trip for our Four-Points Road Trip series and greeted with some of the best scenery of the series. Our destination was “Going to the Sun” Road in Glacier National Park. But the best road was something else entirely. Join us for a great adventure, some new car problems, and great scenery. Plus, more costumes! Oh,... and Bigfoot.

Your Steve Millen story is similar to one I had. Last year, a bunch of friends and I were road tripping our 996 Porsches from Chicago to Tail of the Dragon. A guy who worked in Porsche in late 80's/early 90's in Germany stopped by and talked to us about our cars. Turned out he had a hand in developing the 959.

Nice to see a 928 being put to it's original use. It was a grand tourer designed to combine performance and handling with the ability to do long drives in comfort. Nice to see it can still pull it off.

I've been amazed with all the cars that wear the "GT" name, how many tires are labeled "Grand Touring", how much media references Grand Touring.. and yet how few people take sporty cars out of town for real - grand - tours.

That comment about the Z32 not needing massive BMW-style cooling vents is some hilarious foreshadowing 😂 Ps: an OEM Jspec front bumper may be an improvement worth looking into. They look great and seem to flow quite a bit more air. I've got one for my LS swap Z32

Debatable. Was doing 100mile trips per day in my NA in 110* weather for months. Guessing he doesn’t have the plenum coolant deletes so he can’t see the coolant that is leaking and just topping off. Unless it’s all oem replaced hoses it looks like he’s running all stock hoses. Not even a good idea for city driving let alone road trips.

My 20 year old Sequoia isn't a sports car, but it has the capability of going anywhere I point it and back without a second thought. I was lucky enough in my youth to hit most of the major western national parks in the 90s in the back of my parents' minivan. I'm gradually retracing my path with my own kids in tow now. It's been a great experience with them so far!

Love this series guys, and makes me appreciate my Z32 300ZX TT even more. You bring up an excellent point, how the Z and Porsche barely have any openings and managed heat just fine (except at 11,000 feet lol). I've driven my Z on several 800-1000 mile trips, in traffic, all kinds of weather, and the car never complains. Temps remain almost exactly the same, and it has nearly 80,000 miles now. Now car designers seem to start the design with the grill first, and everything revolves around all the openings.

Might be the compression ratio and oil thickness. Way thinner oil and higher compression nowadays plus emissions. I'm sure cooler engine less emissions issues, plus the need to burn more completely. Running richer to protect the engine and stay within more reasonable emissions standards back then didn't require the venting that we do now. The z4 and m3s nd stuff might be overkill but i would think the newer engines do require more cooling

I love the dynamic you guys have, and the pure car-loving enthusiasm you both have. While I don't live in the US so probably won't ever get a chance to drive those amazing roads, I have spent this video planning a small road trip for the New Year and in part, your love of cars helped remind me that I was in a position this year to buy a car with the heart rather than just the sensible head. I'm sure these trips take a lot of planning and production, but they are so good and as someone un the UK who grew up on modern Top Gear, I would put you efforts right up with some of the best that show gave us.

I'm not sure where to start but let me share that I'm so grateful for this video for the way it was done, where you went and the timing of its release. As I sit here the snow plows are going by and we're confronted with wind chills of -40 degrees F. The Beartooth Highway was amazing, so many good memories, and so was the road through Glacier (a new place to go). My heart aches to road trip right now, so while this was great, it hurts, four months until Spring. Thanks again gentlemen!

Great episode. My rebuilt and restored 928 S4 will see Glacier next Sept. Road trip about 5,000 miles in it every year (and do projects every winter). It’s finally “done”. Put in a larger aluminum radiator with big dual fans and rebuilt the A/C. Runs cool now, inside and down the road. Also wrapped the exhaust and put extra sound deadening and close cell foam under the carpets to manage heat and road noise.

This brought back many memories of driving in that area back in my Navy days. This was in the early 90's and my only car was an '88 IROC-Z, 305 TPI, 5spd car. We even did a 2 week BC and Alberta Rockies tour with it in '92. I never had any idle issues at high altitude and the only time it ran warmer than normal was climbing heavy grades in 5th at high load and under 2500 rpm. Shifting to 4th solved that issue. Seems your sensor input to your engine management might be the culprit for many of your issues. That and lost efficiency with scale buildup, etc. for the cooling system. Keep making these kind of videos please! I enjoy them a lot.

My wife and I drove from Florida to southern California on the southern I-10 route in 1987 in a rental truck with her car in tow. It gave us a real feeling of appreciation for the vastness and natural beauty of these areas.

If you are headed to Arizona on your trip south, one fun road is US60 south of Show Low, Arizona. It runs through the Apache reservation with lots of sweeping turns and elevation changes. When I drove it southbound in May of 2016, there was hardly any traffic. The only part that sucked was hitting major construction well before running into metro Phoenix. If you take it, you will want to see what happened to that big road redo.

Going westbound through death valley is another gorgeous yet very challenging climb (for a car's cooling system). Even modern cars will run pretty hot ascending a very long steep grade in summer heat, unless they have been factory or custom prepped for track use essentially. I put an upgraded radiator in my Mustang GT to better deal with the heat + altitude combo that's so brutal in this region, and now it takes whatever I throw at it. Thanks for the great route to follow in your footsteps, I just might do that this summer. And I love to tent camp along the way....the looks you get from other people pulling camping gear out of your low and loud sports car never gets old!

@@zeommed I originate from Minnesota. In 2010 on my way back from Alaska I hit a deer in the mountains of British Columbia. Nothing I could do to miss her...she ran out at full speed on a narrow mountain road. Totaled my first FJR. Several years later I got back on a new FJR and went to the Bighorns and Beartooth Mountains again. Deer are all around where I live in the back and beyond of Minnesota...I have to ride 5 miles on gravel just to get to pavement. The big bike does just fine. I've done mountain riding for almost 30 years now and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Their videography is great, but it doesn't come close to the real thing. You really need to experience it for yourself. A bike brings you so much closer to nature. I've had numerous sports cars and convertibles all my life, but the bike experience in country like that is the best you can get. FJR's are a special bike...let her take you places you've never been. Good luck and great riding!

I've had the good fortune of driving through Glacier twice this year on my now 40,000+ mile road trip, and it is quite possibly the most beautiful place in the country. Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming are a different world entirely.

Your poor cars on the gravel in Glacier! Ha ha, accidentally found that out as well, but was at least in my 5 spd Tacoma, but had a camper on the back. Can't wait to go back through the good parts in my fun car, 1991 MR2. Great video!

I absolutely love these road trips! Nothing better then taking a fun car out for a long cruise. I did this in my C4 from Iowa to the tail of the dragon, I took a mustang GT from Iowa to San Diego, and I’m already planning my PCH trip in my next toy for 2024 along with a massive trip to Maine in that same toy in 2025. Fun cars are meant to be driven!!

Glacier National Park is incomprehensibly beautiful. I did it in my CRX So in college about 25 years ago with my girlfriend (now wife). We went in early July. Going to the Sun Road had been open for about 2 weeks. The park was EMPTY. I have pictures at some of the main tourist turnouts where you cannot see another car. In either direction. I was able to drive one way and then turn around and drive back the other way with ZERO traffic.

Steve is an awesome human. Got to meet him in 2004 during the annual ZCON, and he talked to us about the design of the #75 car there at Stillen, and then invited us out to hang out in their garage at the track during a historics race that weekend. Was a great experience.

Between 1972 and 1988 my wife and I traveled extensively throughout the western US and Canada in our 1967 Sunbeam Alpine. When I think back on those travels the Bear Tooth Highway and Glacier National Park are indeed among the best memories. And your points about seeing very few sports cars and the feeling of excitement, accomplishment and adventure, (and worrying about a break down!), were just as true then as now. We camped during our travels. Being the only sports car in a campground was an excellent conversation starter, too. To this day we still love traveling in a top down convertible. Your vid is well done and I have subscribed to your channel. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Fantastic scenery! Love the cinematography and with the overheating and sheer cliffs with nothing but a low old rock wall to keep you from plunging over the side added the right amount of tension and suspense to the video! Paul like yours my heart rate was racing and spidey sense was tingling with those scary but beautiful heights! As well I laughed at the humor and costumes! Todd in a skirt? Now that would have been hilarious! Very nicely done Paul, Todd and EverydayDriver team! Thanks for this video Christmas present! Cheers! 👍 👍
