Oh John, at least you end up remembering the sugar. I will forever be reminded by my little brother about the one Thanksgiving when I decided to make the pumpkin pie from scratch, roasting the sugar pumpkin, making the crust and designing autumnal leaves for the pie edge. I checked the pie 30 mins in to make sure the crust was not over baking, covered it with foil, then turning around to see the measured out sugar sitting on the counter! It looked amazing but tasted terrible. I remember my little brother, insistent on trying it, sprinkling sugar over his slice, it didn't help. To this day, the Thanksgiving slogan is "...and remember the sugar!"

I can certainly relate! My big goof up (not with pumpkin pie) was with a 2 layered cake I was supposed to bring for a cake walk game for a Halloween carnival for our jr. high. I made the cake, it was fine. Then... I put the frosting on, and forgot to frost between the 2 layers! I don't know what alerted me to that; but I was horrified! My dad was home that day from work, and he came up with a plan. He said to go ahead and take it anyway! He said he would finish frosting it on top, and put a decoration on it. He said it could be a little Halloween prank! So I did; it wouldn't have hurt anyone anyway. No one knew who brought it, and I'll never know who won it, or what they thought of it! I still remember it 55 years later!

For many people like me it is really encouraging to try recipes again and not going into an emotional spiral of "everyone-can-bake-accept-me-I'm-a-screw-up!" And seeing you not making a huge deal out of it is even more heartwarming, because it makes me see someone else's coping mechanism and helps me not to panic. Thank you for being you :)

Something I like to do now that I've discovered it is mixiing molasses into my granulated sugar when it's time to bake with brown sugar. You can choose whether to make light or dark brown sugar instead of buying different varieties of brown sugar and because you're using it instantly, you don't get lumps or have to break apart stubborn bricks of dark brown sugar

I like making this type of thing as a cake. I always use cloves in addition to the others. I also sprinkle ground cloves on top to cut the sugar.

I just stumbled on to your channel and I’m binching all your fall videos. I’m so happy to see a professional baker make mistakes, it gives me hope, since I’m forgetting all my ingredients all the time or doing it in the wrong order 😄

I just made these! I substituted date sugar and homemade oat flour so I can stay on my diet, I also used powdered Swerve for the frosting!

I had to watch this video the first time without sound because I was in an awkward listening situation. I never realized how animated and expressive you are John. I have watched many performances with American Sign language and you gave a very animated performance. I was dying to watch it with the sound to find out what had happened with the brown sugar. Another wonderful recipe. Love your cream cheese frosting. This will be a nice addition to our Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend.

I just love your videos...warm,witty and educational. I laughed out loud when you gave us the exact gram weight for the flour, and then corrected your mistake by taking out a handful! You have the knack of making us comfortable and relaxed, and reassured. Hope the boys had a great Halloween! Thanks...

So cute when he forgets. One time my aunt made buttertarts, but forgot to include the butter. Everyone told her how delicious they were!

Libby grows a special type of pumpkin from what I read on the label. That’s what makes it better.
