This is the world's highest hydraulic elevator installation, containing four of the world's largest glass hydraulic elevators. They were built in 2008. The biggest challenge was that they couldn't use ropes (the load would had collapsed the ceiling) and the system installed had to be pleasing to the eye, meaning only one jack ram per car could be used.
3:24 Amazing sound of the 4 motors per cab.
This is the coolest hydraulic elevator on youtube.
I just rode these elevators yesterday and was amazed. They are huge and have epic motors. The one on the very right was out of service for some reason. Btw for those of you who are watching this these are much bigger in person than this video makes you think

I'm going on a field trip to the Newseum on Oct 17! I can't wait to see this amazing elevator and this amazing place!
Fun fact: CEMCOLift provided the pumps and jacks for these. However, CEMCOLift no longer exists, as Otis sold the assets to MEI last year.
I was involved in the design of these elevators. There were several major challenges. They didn't want traction elevators because they didn't want hoist ropes and counterweights to be visible. They required these cars travel at 150 FPM with a travel of 101 feet. While they are not the largest hydraulic elevators, they are very unique in the speed and travel. Check out the article in Elevator World for details on the equipment.

Well, if they didn't want this to be traction, why couldn't they just have installed MaxiSpace? MaxiSpace is MRL traction and doesn't require a counterweight and can go up to 500 ft/min and 300 ft.
Well I really like's to see that my design is working fine!......thanks Custom Cabs...
Wow. That is one behemoth of an elevator!

to me it's very slow and time consuming. The motor to me looks very scary due to the ropes going very fast around the two wheels. That's the thing that freaks me the MOST on hydros. MRL traction doesn't scare me; they're fast, and convenient.
Epic motor for a dry-powered in-ground hydraulic elevator!

Art and Science and Style and Safety - that is the Otis way.
Pretty impressive elevators, 4 pumps per elevator is interesting
That motor startup was the best thing I’ve ever heard
Wow!
long live otis elevators/lifts
wow. usually you see the really cool elevators as traction or roped hydraulic but by the looks of this video, the coolest elevator is inground hydro ;)
Does this beat the Minnesota Skydraukic in Atlanta?
Epic motor
Even a company as large as Otis didn't have the resources to build such massive jacks. They gave that job, as well as the job of designing the cars, to CemcoLift (which is now part of Otis). They produced what would be the largest hydraulic jacks ever built, consisting of five individual sections, and requiring specially constructed rigging to put them into place. Each of these rams is 100 feet long when fully extended and can carry up to 50,000 pounds.
So what's the limit to these? The length of pole you can truck to the site?
Nice! Did you film at the Washington Convention Center?
There is some elevators at this 21 story hotel in Panama City beach, Florida. I think there Otis.
What editor do you use?
This is the 6 or 7 story(s) hydro? Wowww!!!
I got stuck in the middle elevator there in 2010 and had to be rescued by the fire department. No joke, they removed one of the top glass panels and we climbed out
THAT WAS EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you showed the machine room it looked like it was traction because it had a pully, but then it sounds like a hydralic.
@blueauraretriever

because hydraulic motors also use traction equipment so that the turbines can pump the oil into the rams. Hydraulic elevator was DUMB for this type of building, should have used MRL traction! They're not too big to be so anwyay.

The way the museum works is you go through security on the first floor, then you take an escalator to the basement/concourse level. Then you ride these up to 6 and work your way down to 1
It's a direct acting one, right? this means the cylinder is really tall. using a pulley would have only needed a shorter piston.
Does the machine really start three times?

theyr for the motor and plus this is the reason why i do not favor hydraulic elevators, I like traction elevators far better. And 2100 freaking gallons of oil?
