This is the world's highest hydraulic elevator installation, containing four of the world's largest glass hydraulic elevators. They were built in 2008. The biggest challenge was that they couldn't use ropes (the load would had collapsed the ceiling) and the system installed had to be pleasing to the eye, meaning only one jack ram per car could be used.

Fun fact: CEMCOLift provided the pumps and jacks for these. However, CEMCOLift no longer exists, as Otis sold the assets to MEI last year.

I was involved in the design of these elevators. There were several major challenges. They didn't want traction elevators because they didn't want hoist ropes and counterweights to be visible. They required these cars travel at 150 FPM with a travel of 101 feet. While they are not the largest hydraulic elevators, they are very unique in the speed and travel. Check out the article in Elevator World for details on the equipment.

Well, if they didn't want this to be traction, why couldn't they just have installed MaxiSpace? MaxiSpace is MRL traction and doesn't require a counterweight and can go up to 500 ft/min and 300 ft.

to me it's very slow and time consuming. The motor to me looks very scary due to the ropes going very fast around the two wheels. That's the thing that freaks me the MOST on hydros. MRL traction doesn't scare me; they're fast, and convenient.

Even a company as large as Otis didn't have the resources to build such massive jacks. They gave that job, as well as the job of designing the cars, to CemcoLift (which is now part of Otis). They produced what would be the largest hydraulic jacks ever built, consisting of five individual sections, and requiring specially constructed rigging to put them into place. Each of these rams is 100 feet long when fully extended and can carry up to 50,000 pounds.

Neat elevators, but they really should have installed traction elevators. They would have been quieter and could have saved energy. Why are they key-carded off anyways? There are only 2 floors to choose from.

Yeah, better yet, MRL traction because they are fast, convenient and dont' require over 2000 freaking gallons of oil!

Sadly, this amazing museum closed in 2019 due to financial losses, and then Johns Hopkins University started to gut this place in 2021 for their expansion project. So, what happened to these elevators? Will they be used in the renovated building, or were they removed? If they were removed, that would be extremely sad and awful if that happened?

because of the capacity and speed required. Sure they could do this with one pump but it would be VERY slow.

***** 1 minute for a very high hydraulic elevator doesn't sound like such a bad thing, but what if there was a emergency & you had to get to the basement in 30 seconds?
