when i first saw this video i thought it was another amazing elevator but it was the underworld elevator with a cab view!

Most of the Trap Door/Sidewalk Elevator is seen on TV but not anymore

This thing is just awesome! Very, very rare!

I thought it would go up to a storage room so it surprised me to see it end behind the counter of the store.

The worst form of surprise would befall a person who puts the wheelie chair on top of that hatch when it ascends. :D

Yes

I used one of these before in downtown Pittsburgh. Had to unload several boxes into the basement of one of the hotels (Renaissance Hotel, I think), and then into ANOTHER elevator to go to one of the ballrooms on one of the highest floor. I think I was there for a good 4 hours by the time I was done moving it all.

EPIC Elevator y'all with EPIC MOTOR Y'ALL

I'm curious about the dual description Bottom Winding Drum Traction Elevator" as Winding Drum and Traction Elevators are different. Winding drum machine, cables are wrapped around the drum from the elevator car and counterweight up to the sheaves top of the shaft. Traction machines the hoist cables are held by friction in the groves of the driven sheave with the elevator cab and counterweight attached to the cables. This applies to basement, overhead and MRL traction machines.

unusual location for an elevator. mostly they are in larger rooms.

The Imperial Music Center in South River, NJ has a sidewalk elevator just like this.

Not the motor, I don't think. It's the brake coil. Since it -- for economical reasons -- has to be fed from AC, instead of DC, it tends to vibrate at the line frequency. And yes, it's quite loud as a result. Please note that, at the time this elevator had been installed, there was no cheap way of obtaining DC (direct current) from the AC (alternate current) mains. This could be accomplished in three ways: 1. Selenium Rectifiers -- weren't available for such high power demands; 2. Mercury Arc Rectifiers -- were too oversized for that purpose, cost only justified in electric locomotives and heavy industrial applications; 3. Motor-Generator sets -- too bulky, inneficient, noisy and expensive. Had high maintenance costs and produced carbon dust, due to brush wear. The solution was to use a shunt winding in the brake coil, which induced a phase shift in the brake coil and allowed it to operate directly from AC, with the added benefit of smaller windings, due to high inductive reactance.
