★About Professor Herp★
I started getting into the reptile hobby in February of 2018. My first reptile was my Bearded Dragon - Maxine Pegasus (creator of duel monsters btw). Since then, I have added five Yellow Ackie Monitors (Asus, Dell, LG, and two unnamed babies), a Chacoan Black and White Tegu (Frappuccino), a Crested Gecko (Destin), and a Russian Tortoise (Tortellini). I also have a dog named Thrall (yes, from World of Warcraft) who is a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix - aka a Chiweenie.
My goal with this channel is to share my knowledge, experience and journey with other reptile/animal enthusiasts and become a better caretaker because of it. Hopefully I can learn a lot from the community through these videos.

Great video! Nice to hear your opinion and side of the story :) I already said this on another channel (not naming anyone out of respect) I don’t have any experience with grow tents so I can’t comment on how good it works and so on but I can see positive and negatives in both kinds of enclosures. No one enclosure is perfect for all species!

Hey man thanks for clearing this up in a respectful, mature way ☺️ we do NOT need any more drama in the hobby, and it seems like people loveeee to start it. I don’t understand. Aren’t we in this for the passion of animals? This is the most positive thing in my life, I don’t get how people fish for negativity to start drama. We are all keepers and we are all allowed to have our own opinions and our own ways of handling our animals. We are ALL learning as we go along! Give Frappuccino a kiss for me!

I'm a few months late responding on this video, but maybe you should show proper set up in a grow tent. I use a grow tent for my Tegu and she thrives more so than the enclosure she was in when we adopted her. I personally think i have her set up good, but would love to see a video on your opinion on doing a proper set up for a grow tent for a Tegu..

@@LHELT464 They need a fairly large enclosure for their size, a water area that is big enough for them to SWIM in (not just soak) and it has to be filtered, they will eat mostly insects with some meat and whole prey, they aren’t extremely tame because most of them are WC, They need a very hot basking spot and high humidity, they need a pretty solid amount of substrate that can also hold humidity, you need to have big branches that they can climb on and you have to secure those branches so they don’t potentially fall on the animal. I think a better beginner monitor if you’re looking for something arboreal is a: Timor Monitor (Varanus timorenis) They are a species of dwarf monitor which means they won’t need a very large enclosure (around 36x18x36 or larger) They don’t need a swimming area They eat primarily insects with the occasional pinkie mouse as a treat They need high humidity because they come from Indonesia They need a hot basking spot (Around 120 degrees F) At least 4 inches of substrate that can hold moisture Being arboreal monitors, give them places to climb They are a bit shy, but with frequent handling they will calm down Timor Monitor average price: $150-200

As some one who keeps reptiles with grow tents I don’t think professor herp said anything wrong, even if you are against grow tents it’s understandable because I was too, but I disagree with him when he said a lot of people are not putting any effort in their grow tents and that is the majority of the case when it comes with grow tents. I did a lot of research about grow tents and even joined a Facebook group (facebook.com/groups/611005919288553// ). The majority of enclosures I’ve seen really shows versatility and the vast capabilities that can be achieved with grow tents ( even with large Reptiles). Most of the enclosures I’ve seen when it comes to monitors and tegus and water dragons have the walls reinforced with bamboo Fence and have digging areas using containers or bricks.
