★About Professor Herp★
I started getting into the reptile hobby in February of 2018. My first reptile was my Bearded Dragon - Maxine Pegasus (creator of duel monsters btw). Since then, I have added five Yellow Ackie Monitors (Asus, Dell, LG, and two unnamed babies), a Chacoan Black and White Tegu (Frappuccino), a Crested Gecko (Destin), and a Russian Tortoise (Tortellini). I also have a dog named Thrall (yes, from World of Warcraft) who is a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix - aka a Chiweenie.
My goal with this channel is to share my knowledge, experience and journey with other reptile/animal enthusiasts and become a better caretaker because of it. Hopefully I can learn a lot from the community through these videos.

    I don’t think reptiles exactly love us but I do think they find us as a positive stimulus or associate us with them. I kinda see it as a symbiotic relationship, they like us and seek us out because of what we have the offer but with certain larger or more complex reptiles like tegus, I think they sorta bridge the gap in their head and just end up seeing us ourselves as a positive stimulus. Just all observation from a reptile nerd and wonderful video be the way. 😁

    I would have turtles and try to get them to trust me with grapes when I was a child, and then they would get comfortable with me and stick their little heads out and I would just put a grape down and be still. Eventually I could feed it the grape, and then when I did that I would pet his little head and neck. And quicker than I thought even without food the turtles would stick their head out and seek some rubs. They'll stick their head out farther and tilt it to the side. Yes, turtle with an "s", I witnessed this many times! 😁 I think some species of turtles might be the most emotional reptile I've seen, but I'm no scientist. I've even seen them respond to a name and + a woman touching a door for their daily walk, and honestly it really looks like he was trying to register what was going on. By the third call his funny little turtle legs are flying across the kitchen. The Dodo has some cool stuff about reptiles and bugs being pets that blew my mind. we actually had a bumblebee that would come check us out every time we would grill. XD we kind of thought it might be the same one but who knows. I never felt threatened by the bumblebees around the honeysuckles. There was also a toad that came out every night and just at the right time every night :o to get belly rubs from my brother and dad who was working on the truck. He would lean over and stick out a leg out for a belly rub. I died. 😭 I can't believe there's actually WILD animals that understand this! It's incredible and taught me a lot, and I appreciate animals even more than I initially did, and I have always loved them with my whole heart. I also got to be around wild baby rabbits and a wild baby squirrel. They are the snuggliest things in the world, I swear it's like having puppies. Squirrels are definitely dogs on speed or crack. XD bunnies are marshmallow puppies. It's just the best. I even found that little deer can appreciate what you're doing, they wiggle their tail around when they're happy with you. And it's cute how they like to lick your fingers, I think they're sometimes asking for food and sometimes just want attention. who knows if they like the salt taste, but it does show how comfortable they are. My 10-year-old Dalmatian turned into a mommy, like full-time mom-mode, and somehow knew how to take care of the deer. I freaking swear animals talk to each other more than we thought! Lol.

    What about similarities between reptiles and birds? The fact that birds show so many emotions is part of what made me first think reptiles might have strong emotions too.

    Good point. I keep snakes since 11 years and I think they can like and develop a strong bond with owner (when treated well of course). My huge snakes surely can differ me or other people they know from strangers and they always repay with delicacy fro nice, respectful treating. Also I noticed, they have personalities and while one snake doesn't like interacting much and allows handling only rather as "acceptance" than liking, but other snake seem liking alot being handled/petted and in general is much more social.

    Honestly this debate is frustrating since people used to say the same things about dogs. That theyre incapable of feeling love cus theyre not as "intelligent" and it shifted to cats and then other mammals and now it's shifted to reptiles. When will we learn to have respect for these wonderful beings and realise that they feel shit and dont have to show it like we do. Like what is this weird insistence on sameness. The scary thing is the arguments against emotions in animals are the same arguments that have been and are still used against neurodiverse folks. Like they've deadass called us, other humans, emotionless just cus we don't emote the same as them (apparently screaming when in pain or laughing when amused is hard to interpret for many people

    Yes! Reptiles can feel love, people say WAY too much that they lack parts of the brain mammals have, that's an overexaggerated pessimistic myth, they have other parts that are linked to love that mammals have to. Just not as many, or to the same extent. They can still care about you, like they play with you, but they wouldn't save you from death. Yes, your reptile can love you, at least a little.

    Ok, so there was a time I went to a pet store and checked out the lizards. There was a tank full of baby bearded dragons. They were doing one of the things that bearded dragons do: basking. Specifically, basking in the spot that was as high up as the other would let them go. There were multiple lizards on the floor of the cage and they were holding themselves at different heights - no two being the same. Hierarchy is just a backdrop for this scene though. One oof the smaller lizards, who was on the floor of the cage, immediately came over to the glass when I approached. There was a lot of trying to climb/dig through the glass. I moved to the side. The lizard followed me. I thought that was interesting so, I started looking at the lizards that were basking in higher spots. This little lizard proceeds to climb up the rock pile that the others were on, climbing over other lizards, until catching up with where my eyes were: the lizards at the top. They were not happy about sharing their space. Little lizard paid no attention to them. When I moved on (painful as that was), this little lizard followed as far as possible. What was going on there? I have no idea, but it really *seemed* to be motivated by feelings. It may have figured out that humans mean being able to leave the cage, and wanted to not be stuck there anymore. The lizard didn't react that way to any other person who was there. Just picked me out for some reason and made a great attempt to get my attention. This incident made me feel like there's more going on in their heads (at least for some of them) than I'd been told.

    I think the big question here is... how we define love? Some reptiles certainly can develop a bond with their owner, though common conception is - comparing to mammals, they do not have a "real" emotional love but more a symbiotic relationship based on food/safety/etc provided by owner. Here, I guess, we should ask - does "love" that we get from a dog or cat is "better than this symbiotic relation? Or even other humans? Maybe what we call love is in fact a kind of symbiotic relationship based on meeting needs as safety/company and providing material needs. Only difference here seem most of reptiles are rather lone predators so they do not have need for company/petting etc, while most of mammals (including humans) are herd animals so they generally can't live without company and support of at least one alive being.

  • @ProfessorHerp

    @ProfessorHerp

    Good note on the herd vs. solo aspect. Defining love is definitely a hard task and necessary to further study whether we can claim reptiles have that capacity.

    I have a big question i ask mysel for some time... can some reptiles really love their owner? Like really miss u and need ur attention. I have a bearded dragon, some gekos, a cornsnake and a chinchilla and sometime it looks like they really love to spend time with me and if i don't sped enough time with them they get in my hand and stat... sometimes even ignore food.... They like too chill with me and my chinchilla sometime reject me so it is something weird to be loved by a dinosaur and rejected by a fluffy ball. I wonder if one day they would be free would they miss me?
