I once repaired a sheared keyway which was way worse than this one on a girls Toyota pickup 22r using JB weld. The repair lasted the life of the engine. The keyway was completely sheared out. This is easily repairable.

That happened to my forester and i drilled a hole and taped put a bolt on it mini tiny weld and new balancer and its working just fine 😂😂

What do you mean "taped put a bolt on it"? Where does the bolt go?

That's not a rebuilt engine. Looks like one of those backyard mechanic type deals. I always check my specs, use proper fasteners. Doesn't matter if its inch pounds or ft, do the job right the 1st time. Torque to spec!! Good video!!

Wow.. Talk about a hack job! First thing I did before rebuilding my engine was buy the 3 Company 23 Specialty tools I needed for the job. You're going to rebuild an engine, might as well do it right the first time..

WELD IT it's only a problem if the owner sells it saying things like `new motor` & even that it isn't your problem, this isn't a new pristine car! Warranties are for clean cars, 1 owner, 3years, low mileage, mature driver - a WRX never qualifies for any warranty, ever.

I've had to fix stuff with no cash. if you got this $2000 car for 800 it gets a 500 fix - at most. Why would you put a new motor into this car? Is there some sentimental value? JB Weld the timing pulley, LockTight on a new balancer throw it back together, done! You have a fine channel and really show how to fix cars. That's just not how you like to do things. I suppose if this car`s worth $5000 and you got it for 500 then a salvage or JDM motor might be ok.

@@scottbaker9066 Funny enough any 2002-2009 WRX is likely more reliable than any NA 2.5 Subaru with proper maintenance, just due to the head gasket issue. Don't write them off as unreliable just because dumb kids ruin them. The EJ20 especially is a go forever engine, if you actually take car of it. :)

Would love to know who rebuilt it the first time. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiet.

Use some JB WELD to take up the slop. Yes I know many will scoff at this but once the JB sets up, you’ll be good to go. Sometimes you just have to MacGyver certain situations.

Danny J. Rumbles the difficult part is getting it perfectly straight and getting the timing gear perfectly aligned. In a pinch yea it may work for a while..... seeing how well those “mechanics” rebuilt the motor i would pull it and replace.

Had this happen to me but the timing gear and crankshaft are still good. Had a backyard mechanic do my timing belt and he didn't torque it to spec. 1998 outback

JB weld the woodruff key, toss some old Fozzy struts on that thing, and take it off-roading into the sunset. :-D

I can’t get my crank pulley to go all the way in. It stops and there’s still a few millimeters. Can’t hit it with a mallet because there’s no room. Any advice??

If you are in the U.S, you can rent a harmonic balancer installer from an auto parts store. I rented one at AutoZone. Both my crank sprocket and harmonic balancer were difficult to remove and put back on as well. The tool will work for both but for the sprocket behind the balancer, I had to modify the use of the tool and get some plumbing pieces of PVC pipe from home Depot to push in the sprocket evenly. At first I tried using a 32mm socket but nothing would fit through the ratchet hole. You fit the pipe over the inside of the sprocket where you don't contact the teeth and then use the harmonic balancer to push it down evenly just as you would the balancer. Hope that helps

A LOT is the correct amount for this bolt. I got a click out of my torque wrench but I think I had it set to 135 lbs-ft, not 100% sure. I replaced to oil seal on my old 2005 Town and Contry. The instructions made it 100% clear that failure to tighten this bolt would result mechanical damage destroying the crankshaft! The main crank pulley on that engine was interference fit and DID NOT have a key/keyway. If you did not get the pulley on all the way (or crooked, etc) the pulley could rotate on the crankshaft damaging it along with the pulley. There was no way to fix it as it had a very precise taper, you had to replace the crank at that point. ALWAYS follow the instructions AND do not remain ignorant of those instructions. Just because you are not aware of a proper procedure or specification DOES NOT mean it doesn't exist, look it up!

its actually 2 quick bursts of "uga dugas" and one *click* sound you make with your mouth to make sure it's torqued correctly

My crank pulley has a tiny bit of play and squeaks a little bit. Should I remove the belts and see if it’s loose? The car doesn’t have any power issues or hesitation.

Not worth it for a mechanic but a good buy for a DIY teardown and rebuild.

It's not just bolt torque - bad design, one little key to hold both cam sprocket and pulley/balancer. Bolt torque is only 80ft/lb (12x1.5 bolt on ej22). Should have longer key and interference fit on sprocket/pulley or bigger bolt. Loctite the bolt,sprocket,and pulley. Just my 2 cents...

Well that's what happens when things aren't done right eventually it comes back hopefully he doesn't do a cheap fix and then sell it to somebody else who inherits this headache

Loctite 243 and hit it with MG725 for 3 seconds. If I cannot get a mg725 on it, then yes torque to spec.

How did you remove the sprocket, I have similar issues I remove the covers the pulley was cutting the cover due to unbalanced spinning pulley Now I can’t remove the sprocket I have been spraying WD40 all week and unsuccessful

Friend took my Subaru legacy 2.0RE 2006 model. Left it somewhere. When i got it. It doesn't start engine does crank. Then smoke came out from the engine..any ideas lads.? Should I give up and buy new one. I would love to keep it. It's been sitting now for 3 months.

Let me ask you a question Mr Subaru my brother-in-law complains about his 2009 or 2005 Forester sometimes when I get on the highway kind of hesitates and sputters a little bit not always I'm thinking tuna fuel filter maybe he's probably the fuel pump will not sure what do you think. A different matter I didn't have the tool to hold a harmonic balancer when I have to torque mine so I wrapped a the fan belt around it and locked in place and got the torque torque to bolt anyway have a Merry Christmas love to hear an answer if you have one thank you

What do you think was the torque used on the Harmonic balancer nut? Any guesses?

They work themselves out sometimes It has also been known for the manufacturers re ommended torque to be not enough. Then revise it up after a few years and just say oops sorry Loctite can help and maybe and 2 or 3% to the torque

So my balancer wobbled on me. I replaced my balancer with a new one and followed the proper torque procedure when installing new one but I'm still getting some bad vibration from my motor. Any recommendations?

A van caravan has same problem bolt backed off crankshaft a2001

For EJ205 the factory spec is only 94 ft lbs

Weld it. It will work till it enters the scrap yard.

I've got a very slight wobble at idle with my harmonic balancer on an 03 Outback. Is it always going to be wear to the key on the crankshaft or could it be something else (balancer pulley itself)? Bolt is tight and torqued to spec 177NM

That was a new OE woodruff key. No way to fab one to fill in the void in the crank correctly.

MrSubaru1387 As a mechanic, you are train to diagnose, remove and replace. You don’t mess around trying to save customers money by modifying parts, diy guys, will take chances before replacing very expensive parts; and the problem you are facing now, fits in that category. You have made an excellent diagnostic and, the decision will depend on the customer budget and skill.

Hi Mr. Subaru. I’m highly considering buying a 2009 Outback 3.0R with 118k miles, nothing wrong with it, Wife is concerned about age and mileage. What do you think? As far as I’m concerned these cars are great. Please give your input and what could I tell her to convince her.

Sounds good to me. My 02 L.L.Bean 3.0L just rolled 295k miles. Drive it daily. Would drive it cross country tomorrow, without worry.

It looks like the pulley had also been making contact with the front of the block. Whoever did that work should have their hands removed.

Weld that key up. Only cheap solution!

@@TheMechanicj Wright the ticket correctly; broken crank at sensor pulley, estimte ... $$$$ or $, customer chose $ - welded crankshaft to sensor pulley, NO WARRANTY itemize new parts, not every customer can, or will, pay for the best fix.

Loose Bump plate, loose crank bolt, worn belt. Disastrous!

Always torque your crank bolt? Good luck with that. Every time I ask, she gets mad at me.
